I agree. I work at a Kwik Kar now so I have access to a lift and a bunch of other stuff, plus I've also been building my tool collection for some time now and have way more tools. It has a bad head gasket on cylinder one, the ring around the piston has a 1” chunk missing from the gasket. Got the push rods, rocker arms, head gasket kit all to find out both heads are cracked beyond repair. No biggie, it has a title and it's an easy fix. Hard to find a decent car nowadays for less than $5k so either way it's a win. Probably going to do a build thread for it to eventually.

My dad always said "if it's mechanical, there isn't anything that can't be fixed".  The caveat here is; how much money are you willing to spend.  Parts for Rangers are pretty cheap, especially if you have a U-Pull nearby.  You'll get it back together.  The build thread is a good idea!

Really simple, but I replaced the sparkplugs/wires on my truck. I had put in some iridium plugs about 30k miles ago, but when my wife was driving my truck the other day, she complained it had a hiccup at higher RPMs, in an effort to save gas, I rarely get above 3k rpms, but it was pretty noticeable above 4500 RPM. Pulled the plugs and the gap had gotten to .065", looked it up and it should be .054, so got some new Motocraft plugs to toss in.... and while pulling the plugs, one of them disintegrated in my hands.. so had to go back to the parts store and get a wire set. and boy did that make a huge difference, even at lower speeds. Much more peppy, and happier engine, hopefully some better fuel economy as well. I'm just surprised the old plugs didn't last long at all, but I've had some issues that have since been fixed, including a leaking injectors, a vacuum leak at one point, and a lot of short cold drives, so maybe that shortened their lives?

My 2003 Edge had iridium plugs in it when I bought it.  Dealer said they had just tuned it up, so I didn't bother looking.  Mine started running rough(er) so I pulled the plugs.  Yep, HUGE gap.  I bought new Motorcraft plugs and wire set.  I pulled those after about 40k miles on them and they looked like new.  My opinion: iridium plugs suck.

Got most everything put back together again today, only thing I have left is just put the drive belt on and the intake tube. She ran, firing order was backwards. Seeing a huge spaghetti of wires and plugs was fun but I think I got them all. Also gotta deal with drivers side exhaust, I broke a stud on that flange so it sounds like a race truck. Dealing with it more tomorrow, so glad to hear it run again and I'm driving it a bit tomorrow.

Got it started again today, everything is good. Got a coolant flush thing in there, ran it for probably about an hour today and it never over heated. May have a bad freeze plug on passenger side, but we'll see Friday. Does anyone know where to find bolts for the headers? I lost some and broke a couple on the old heads and can't find replacements at all and don't want to fight taking one out and going to the hardware store. I'd rather just buy all new bolts and a better gasket.

Ran it for a while with another Prestone coolant flush thing, noticed the radiator started leaking today and possibly one of the freeze plugs on passenger side. There's water dripping on that side of the block right behind the motor mount, I hope the blocks not cracked or something but eventually I'll take the motor mount out to look. Also realized today that when I cut part of the plastic fender liner to get better access to the egr tube I cut through the hood release cable. Decided $12 is better than $70 so I went to autozone and got some good pins for it temporarily. Probably the only thing good on this truck is the brakes, only because they stop. I haven't looked at them yet lol.

Well, cooling system flush gets the crud buildup out of the engine.  Problem with that is; that crud buildup is probably keeping the coolant IN (as you've now found out).  Better to know it was that close to a leak and just get it over with.  That sucks about the hood cable.  Do you have any salvage yards in your area?

I agree, it would suck to be driving and over heat the truck and ruin the motor again. I bought the truck with high expectations that it wasn't gonna take a lot to get going and daily driven, but forgot that the truck had to overheat for some reason and didn't expect to have to dive in and fix a bunch of stuffoh well, lessons learned. Still cheaper than buying a better truck. Plus, I'm gaining experience; this was the first time I've ever done head gaskets on an engine. And yes, there's junkyards around me but the hood pins don't bother me too much at the moment. The hood is pretty beat up, the edge closest to the windshield is bent up pretty bad and there's some dents and rust. I want to get the interior torn out and get it cleaned.

Actually, I like the hood pins.  I'm an old fart, and I remember the Mach I's, Barracudas and such that had the factory hood pins.  Loved them!  Ya know, although it is pretty dirty, that upholstery looks like it is in good condition and might clean up really well.  Pulling it out so you can get to everything better is the best way to go.  You'll get there, it will just take some time.

Thanks y'all. Anyone know if the door wiring is the same for all rangers? Like power windows/locks/mirrors? Need a door for the drivers side and not good at wiring

Don't know about the 1997, but my son replaced the rust-plagued doors on his 1999 with doors from a 2003.  Now to be fair, his truck didn't have power windows until he did this swap, but he did the necessary wiring per the 1999 diagram and it worked beautifully.  Power windows, locks and mirrors.  Unfortunately, 6 months later, he fell asleep on his way home from work and totaled the truck.  LOTS of work down the tubes on that one.

I had that happen to me with my first Ranger a 1996 4x4. I was working nights & I was a couple miles from home when I fell asleep & went off the road & hit a tree. Fortunately I was not injured.

Cameron was working 3rd shift at the time... about 3 miles from home.  Didn't hit a tree, instead, he chose a metal street light pole.  Snapped it right off (although I have heard these are designed to do just that).  Police on the scene said the marks in the ground indicated the truck rolled 6 times before coming to rest.  And like you, luckily, he was not injured other than some minor cuts and bruises.  That Ranger held together VERY well to protect him.

Got some manifold bolts, m8-1.25x75mm. $15 at my local ace. Truck runs good, has an exhaust leak and the catalytic converter rattles but runs better. Check engine light popped on today after I washed the engine bay with perhaps a little too much PSI. IAC valve pooped the bed, and it's running lean on bank one, weird. Also, Speedo doesn't work. There's 3 speed sensors online, one for an electric speedo that's in the trans, one in the tail shaft of the trans unspecified, and one in the diff.anyone happen to have an idea which it could be?

I always thought it was the one in the diff, but I'm not familiar with the older gen Rangers so I could be very wrong.

EDIT:  On further thought, I think the one in the diff is for ABS...

I think you are correct Mike about the sensor in the rear diff being for the ABS.

Welp, it wasn't the one in the tail shaft. Got it replaced today, still no speedo. Gonna try the one in the diff next, it's cheaper than a used speedo

Monday night (01/30/2023), it started sleeting then turned to freezing rain (yay!).  WHILE it was coming down, I went out with a shop rag and silicone spray and wiped down both door seals.  The next morning, everything was covered in ice.  My truck opened right up!!!  So thanks, Eddie, for that tip.  I will attest that it definitely works!

P.S.  Only downside to that was then I had to clean the ice off the windows and drive the 35 miles to work...   :'(

It's my understanding that iridium plugs are typically used in boosted applications

Silicone spray keeps it lubed and should help with the sticking too. Spray and wipe off the excess. Takes the brown off too.

It's my understanding that iridium plugs are typically used in boosted applications

That would make sense.  In a naturally aspirated engine, they don't appear to bring much value to the table.
