I haven't seen a writeup on Projector Headlights on this site but I am looking for information.

I am in the Market for a Headlight Replacement because these OEM Headlights just aren't making it happen anymore, just cant see at night, especially when it is a little wet out.  The Roads I run at night have a lot of animals crossing, without them using the crosswalks, LoL, but if you cant see them you can avoid them.

So what I am asking is who has done the projector headlight swap ?

What components have you used, i.e. Housings, Projectors, Bulbs - HID vs LED ?

How much work modifying the housing with new projectors ?

Also, do we do LED Projectors or HID ?

I have asked this same question on other Ranger Sites and have gotten replies to check out the Retrofit Store, or buy some of these projector or that  one and put them together.    These responses are ok, and put me in the right area but I plead stupidity... or maybe just scared to attempt the mod to my own housings !

Any info about swapping Projectors, choices between LEDs and HIDs, and any info about someone that may do it for a reasonable price... please post, I need new headlights and projectors are the most logical choice.

Here is a list of what I am thinking for parts: (Remember cost is a consideration but the actual light output and the light pattern in front of the vehicle is more important) !

1) I chose these Housings for the look I think I wanted:  Spyder Projector Housing, there are different ones out there, but these are what I was looking at.

 https://www.amazon.com/Spyder-Auto-PRO-YD-FR01-1PC-HL-BK-Projector-Replaceable/dp/B003ZNVFQ2.

And then there are these, which do you get ?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IGK9UHO/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B01IGK9UHO&pd_rd_wg=Zj7eH&pd_rd_r=7TW7FK8THNJ0MGQWQS13&pd_rd_w=e2TGv

Remember these will get a different Projector !

Since I will be changing out the projectors, I'm guessing the housings may not be a problem, maybe any will do !  Maybe my housing choice will be based on what I like vs Price !

2) I was told to get these Projectors, and mod the above housings to accept them.

https://www.theretrofitsource.com/projector-kits/retrofit-kits-universal/bi-led-morimoto-m-led-headlight-projectors-kit.html

I was also watching a Video on U-Tube, and the output of the "Koito Bi-LED Projectors" were by far the best even against the Miromoto.

What the light pattern will be mounted in a 2003 Ranger, is another thing.

Thanks for reading, post your comments, I need all the help I can get.

JAMMAN, why isn't the
gallery working for me ?

Having never done it before, I would honestly reach out to one of the retrofitters and get it done. I can get retrofitted head lights for my lightning for 500-600.

That said, I have owned oem HID and oem LED vehicles. LED is superior

You've linked a set of replacement projector headlights, they're complete, just get them and enjoy.

Some info:

1) Just fitting a projector to regular halogen bulbs, massively increases the effective light output as well as focus.

2) Retro fitting, or just fitting projectors to headlight housings has to be the most difficult part.

3) Once you have those housings, you're open to fit LED or HID bulbs to them, for the most part, they're all going to be like replacing regular bulbs.

4) As the projector does all the work, there isn't the sensitivity to where the "filament" is positioned (that's what causes bad alignment and pattern in a regular housing) so you don't have to spend much on bulbs.

5) HID's are more complicated to wire up, i would start with a nice set of LED's first, as they're just plug and play and don't require extra expensive hardware and wiring/looms/relays.

MaDMaXX,
Thx... as you said retrofitting the Projectors is the most difficult parts... Is there a procedure to go by, how to cut the housings... alignment of the Projectors before securing them in place !

I'm going to contact The Retrofit Store and see what they charge, I'm thinking it is around $500 for the service.

I'm not sure how set a procedure is/would be - it's a little custom work on every one, it's why if i really liked a set of housings that had projectors already in them, i would just get them instead.

The RetroFit Source http://www.theretrofitcource.com is a great source.  You can do a retrofit that is ambitious, or one that is fairly straight forward.  Wiring them up is easy.  They will sell you the ballasts, igniters if the set you pick needs them, relays and a complete harness.  It literally turns it plug and play.  The DS2 projectors will fit in the stock housings with minimal work.  The went into my fogs with only a little trimming on the bulb mount.  My headlights have the FX2's, a bigger projector, more light, but they take more modification.

There is a gentleman over on FRF that does them if you want, he did my headlights.  I did my fogs.

Please whatever you do, do not put anything in your halogen reflectors other than halogen bulbs.  LED's, HID's nothing should go in them.  Not only will you get a crappy beam, but you will get glare, not to mention it is illegal.

Also on here, Anthony @sheltonfilms did a retrofit on his truck and posted an excellent write up at => Retrofit

Also, not all projectors are created equal.  The ones from The RetroFit Source are excellent.  Others may or may not be as good.  I have been running theirs for years, headlights and fog lights, with no issues, excellent light projection, very happy.

Things have taken a turn... good or bad, not sure, but I have decided to go with the Morimoto, D2S 4.0 Bi-Xenon Projectors, with 35W drivers, and Switchback Halos.
The reason for this turn around is that the pattern of the D2S Units not only have a broader low beam, but the High beams are where the D2S shines and I need the high more than good low beams.

These are the Morimoto D2S Bi_Xenon Projectors:

73mm = 2.87", the new Housings are 3.5", but I need to cut off the back end of the Housings, so some sort of spacer will be needed.

78mm ID, 80mm OD, Just over 3".

These are the new Housings for the Projector Retrofit... not sure where this is going but I have started.

Housing Rear View.

I also found a Jig On-Line for the bolt pattern of the D2S Mounting Plate, the same as the Hella D5 Projectors, and ordered it but... there is a holiday where it is coming from and things are on hold. The holiday is called "Tomb Sweeping" and it lasts for five days, I am wondering what that's about but haven't looked it up !

This Jig has a positioning Pin based on the type of OEM Bulbs you use, it aligns the jig to the same position as the OEM Bulb, and has Drill Sleeves to position the holes, sounds good BUT only time will tell. (I think I need to made a back up as soon as it arrives).

I have LED Fog Lights, cheap ones, but hoping they work out too, just need to fill the area in front of the truck, similar to the OEM Fogs !

After that I am hoping the Mezzanine will be completed in the Barn (walls are started), and I can get the Truck inside again and then the doors come apart for powered windows, maybe locks and mirrors too. All of the electrics will be based on the How-To's on this Site.

Will update once things arrive and the projects get started.

Thanks for reading !

Two questions left to figure out !

1) Should I use LED Strips inside of the Housings, just above the Parking Lights ?  (2.5" Long) !
See housing in my last post.

2) Just how close can I get the D2S Lens to the Housing Lens.
D2S = 73mm = almost 3"; Housing = 3.5" from Bulb Mounting Point to Housing Lens... not sure how much space there will be after the back is cut off of the Housing !

A little copy + paste from that other site lol

My measurement is 103mm from the bulb seat to the lens. The issue I've read from others that have retrofitted projectors is having to relieve the radiator shroud to get the headlight back on.

What do you plan on using the LED strip for? DRLs?

Where did you find the jig?

The D2S measure 87mm or 2.87", almost 3/4" shorter.
What is your full length of the Projector you have ?

The D2S measure 142mm or 5.9", stem to stern, I will need to get in behind the headlights before removing the housings and see what it measures.
I was also reading where someone used the D2S for Fog Lights... after looking at the light output, they should make very bright Fog Lights.
I was thinking the mini H1's for Fog or maybe the Diode Dynamics For Lights, but they will have to wait !

Thanks for the picture, I will keep it handy; when I was looking behind the headlight, I did notice the plastic panel will need cutting but I was hoping the metal radiator support didn't need to be cut !

Has anyone done a drawing for cutting the metal panel, might help a lot of people ?

The LED Strips, I was thinking added directional lights not DRLs.
I will have Switchback Halos from Diode Dynamics for the DRLS; they have three different lights, one bright white for DRLs, one dimmer white for Angle Eye Effect at night, and one amber setting for directionals !
I always told my daughter growing up that "Less is Best", I guess I need to follow my own rules.
Thinking on it a little, I do think without the extra LEDs, the overall Housing would look cleaner... !

At these levels LED's generate plenty of heat. They come with heat sinks on them, so that should tell you something. Also keep in mind that the plug and play LED's will not give you superior performance, just like PNP HID's they will produce   beam patterns with out projectors.

The FX-R's that I am running in my headlight are bigger than the DS2;s and I didn't cut anything on the radiator support. They do take a lot more to mount in the headlight though.

I looked at that too... and the Higher Powered LEDs create a lot of heat, not as much as Bi-Xenon Bulbs but quite a bit of heat.
Alos, the D2S Projectors will be mounted with the bulbs outside of the housings so I am hoping they will be cooled by the movement of the vehicle.

Yes... and the higher priced LED Projectors have Fans on them too as well as heat sinks, and the Fans are noisy, more RF than the Drivers of the Bi-Xenon Projectors, don't know but I will find out.   The Retrofit source says there is a cure for the RF from the Bi-Xenon...  !?!

The main reason I decided against LED Projectors is the High  Beam Performance, I could live with the Low Beams of the LEDs, they were really good, even by comparison to the Bi-Xenon Projectors, but the High Beams, the LEDs never performed as well as the Bi-Xenon and gave off too many shadows.
I watched a LOT of Videos, yes a lot of them made by sellers of Projectors, but in all of the videos the performance of the Bi-Xenon high beams just blew everything else away.

I drive a lot of back roads, dark back roads, and the extra lights is welcome.

Too late now, I will see what happens, after they are installed, which is another thing... I am not sure about that but am working on it.
Truth be told I would rather get someone who knows do the job but I am having a hard time paying the $680 wanted by Lightwerkz to do it !

Biker, I am hoping that the Jigs I found will help, I plan on double checking them before using but I hope they are the savor I need.
What are the differences between the FX-R's and the D2S's ?

I have a LED flashlight that has a heat sink it gets so hot. You can touch it after 10 minutes but barely. It is confirmed brighter than my headlights.

The RF issue is an interesting one. My headlights use the FX-R projectors, and create no RF noise. My fog lights have the DS2's, and they do make RF noise. It only affects radio stations that are on the edge already, but it's there. They sold a 'filter' I think they called it, and it didn't fix it. I am sure it's the harnesses, not the lights, but I honestly haven't looked at the differences.

The FX-R is bigger. The DS2 you can fix through the OEM bulb hole, but the FX-R requires more surgery to the housing. So I am guessing that surgery moves the projector forward in the housing, closer to the front cover, creating more space behind the assembly. It's still tight, don't get me wrong. Putting those in is one of the most frustrating things I've done on the truck...

The RF issue shouldn't be a problem unless I use my Amateur Radios, since I only use the FM now, I am, again. hoping for the best and no interference.

In the Ranger application the D2S will need major remodeling of the Housing to fit.
The back needs to be cut and the bolt holes need to be drilled; I wish it was just the Bulb Hole Mounting Method.

As I mentioned, I found an Alignment Jig and hoping it works, just for one set of lights.

I went on the TRS Site and watch "TRS Matt" go through his videos and checked out the FX-R's, they are a lot bigger.
Since you used the FX-R and didnt cut the Radiator Support, the D2S's should fit without any trimming.

Thanks for your input, any other points of interest would be appreciated.

Thx / Ltr

The owner of TRS is a young guy for being in business for 13 years.  He looks like he is in his early twenties... must have started early on.

I have respect for TRS but it took forever to get a hello when I finally joined after lurking for several years. Part of the reason I started this place. I would have to die to not post in a welcome thread and if it ever gets to that point where I'm alive and don't care I'll give it to someone who cares more.

A lot on information about LED Bulbs, which I could run in my housings and for a LOT less money.
I had decided on LED Projectors, and felt good about them, until I watched too many U-Tube Videos than I want to count and now I am committed to the Morimoto, D2S, 4.0s.

Just to clear something up... I posted "TRS Site" but wasn't thinking we are Ranger People... !
The "TRS Site" I was talking about is "The Retrofit Source" !

Sorry if there was any confusion, I will spell it out next time.
