Okay... anyone who has seen the pics of my truck knows it's a "gentleman's truck"; a pavement queen. One member on another forum once told me they hated my truck because it had too much "shiny  ".  Currently, it has many luxury appointments in the interior such as leather 6-way seats, full length console, OHC and Lincoln shift lever / tilt handle / turn signal stalk and leather steering wheel.  For some reason, I want a floor shift.  There are plenty of options out there that support the 5r55e automatic trans pattern of PRND21.  The one that has caught my eye is from a 2002 - 2005 Crown Vic or Grand Marquis.

I guess I am performing a sanity check here.  Does anyone have thoughts on whether this would look good and do you see any issues with installation / function?  I haven't yet been to the Pick n Pull to see if I can find one of these in decent shape and, of course, I have to get measurements and such to ensure things would even have a chance of fitting in between the power seats.  Lots of research ahead, but I wanted to get some input from the members here.  Let me know your thoughts!

There is nothing wrong with your truck. Some people strip them to save every ounce to get through the quarter mile quicker. Some people lift them to avoid rocks. Some people lower them to be able to take corners faster. Some people like nothing but bone stock, anything extra seems like fluff. Some people like to dress up their interiors and daily functions with things they like about other vehicles. Both you and I fall in this category.

I think a floor shifter would look awesome. The hump in a crown vic is way different than a ranger but you are no stranger to fab. Go for it and post the results here, I like the idea. You would need the plastic for the column from a standard ranger to get rid of the lever hole but way doable.

Yeah, the upper column shroud is on the initial parts list, as is a filler plate for the column shift gear indicator. I haven't been to the pick n pull since I thought of using the CV/GM console, but our local yard has a bunch of them. I never paid attention if any had the floor shift/console. Based on casual Internet searches, these were fairly plentiful. There WILL be fabrication/modification to get the console to mount decently. I think the shifter itself will be the easy part.

My 94 cougar xr7 had a full length console with the shifter. I've also seen a crown vic with an explorer full length console. I think its do-able. 🤞

Yep, there's a bunch of cars with the PRND21 on the floor with console. Got my heart set on the Crown Vic one at the moment. Availability may change that though.

70 cougar and mustang had a floor shift too, don't remember if they had a console or not.

I already have an Expo full-length console in the truck. Problem is, I need the matching console so it will all blend together. Not sure how I could mold the shift indicator plate into the Expo console. As for the Cougar/Mustang... those wouldn't be cable operated shifters. Still used linkage rods back in the '70s. However, this early in the game, I can't rule anything out completely.

I have a 96 mustang floor shifter in my BII
The OD on off button works with a light in the dash also

The difference with the floor shifter vs column shifter is the cable and the transmission side of things. The ranger/explorer shift cable approach the transmission from the front of the vehicle
The car style console shifters the cable approaches the trans from the back of the vehicle

So for me to use a 96 mustang floor shifter in my BII I had to swap out the parking pawl (shifter arm) in the side of the trans for the mustang style. The explorer the shift lever points up, on the cars it points down. To do this I had to drop the pan and unbolt the assembly

I love my floor shifter, I did not want column shift with my V8 and automatic conversion. Aftermarket shifters are clunky and ugly (Winter, Hurst, etc) Plus they do not have the OD on off button built in and the gear indicators light up green to match my dash.

I had to build a custom mount for my shifter, because I already have a center console and a manual t case shifter...so its a total custom job on my 88.
I love it...my arm rests on the shifter perfectly, elbow on the center console, hand on the shifter.

Also I had to modify the shifter  gate so it would lock in 1 and 2...on the mustang the shifter actualyl slides from 1-2 and from 2-d and it would SHIFT ON ITS OWN! So I filed down the slots so it stays locked in gear. Much better for 4x4ing.

Want to see pics?

old pic its raised up on a custom tripod mount now
I also need to build a full bezel from fiberglass/wood/fabric/ 3d printer someday to cover the ugly

Thanks for that (very helpful) info! I assumed I would have to do some modification to the shift lever on the trans, just haven't gotten that far in the process. So you saved me some crawling around on the wet ground! :) The OD button is fairly easy to handle by extending the existing wiring to the floor. Changing the shifter arm isn't a big deal, is it? Dropping the pan is fine as I want to change filter and fluid anyway, so two birds with one 9mm JHP ;). Pics? Absolutely!!

Trying to visualize in my head how grinding off those gates keeps the shifter locked.  Will have to see the thing all together to get the idea.  I suppose it is possible that the Crown Vic/Grand Marquis unit does things differently.  Time will tell!

In this picture:

It is between gears 1 & 2
When you slide it into 1 or 2 that metal tab is spring loaded and will go up into the notch (see the window in the shifter arm? where the "tab" is coming through?)
When you depress the button on the handle it pushes the metal tab back down and allows you to shift
Exactly the same as the park position

Crown vic or any of the "console" shifters will be the same way...I know because I have a box of them I collected from the junk yard to do this same mod on other rangers
The cars if you put them in 1st gear and stomp on it when it hits redline the shifter will MOVE and shift itself into 2 and then D.... Not something we want in a truck

I understand what you're saying, but grinding off the detent seems (in my head) just the opposite of what you would want. Like I said, gonna have to get one in my hands so I can see everything.

All Mustangs had floor shifters & they could be had with or without consoles. Here is a pic of the one that came out of my 69 Coupe.

Looks just like the one that was in my '69 Mustang and also the one in my '68 Torino Sport. Classic looks!

I'd say it'd be cool to one in a ranger long someone doesn't put in that stupid shift knob that dodge used....

ArcticWolf and I went out to our local U-Pull a couple of weeks ago. Butt load of CVs and GMs there and NONE of them had the floor shift/console. I'm thinking I have to go back and do some more research.

Well, today it was 64 degrees and sunny; awesome day for February!  I took the opportunity to venture under the truck to check some things and found that the Escape floor shifter will operate my trans the same way as the column shifter.  I actually disconnected the column shift cable from the trans lever and installed the Escape cable which was connected to the floor shift unit.  Worked perfectly!  I will have to bend the bracket that holds the cable to the side of the trans to get it ever-so-slightly closer to the shift lever, but that shouldn't be difficult.  I think the hardest part of this mod will be the console top... getting it fabricated to look decent and solid.

agreed, mounting the shifter was the hardest part
And then I had to re do the mount when I finally installed a manual t case.
I built a couple of simple brackets to hold my shifter in the perfect place....my elbow rests on the elbow pad / center console and my hand sits right on the shifter....very comfortable!
Someday I will build a fiberglass / plastic 3d printed console cover to hide all the mechanical stuff....

I am thinking about changing consoles to possibly make this easier/better looking.  Currently, I have an Expo full length console.  Problem with this one is that if I use the one-piece Sport console top to modify, I don't think I can install it after it has been completed... due to the dash being in the way while trying to negotiate it over the shift handle.  I will, of course, do more test fitting and such before I go ripping out the existing console and try to fit in the Escape/Mariner unit.  I have to take some serious measurements and then go to the local Pick N Pull to see if there is any possibility it will even fit between the seats.

Newer expos and aviators have floor shifters and with a little work the consoles fit. Also and I should be banned for this but s10's blazers Jimmy's have optional floor shifters with full length consoles. The console for the most part is relatively flat. In my old 83 ranger I used a 79-86 mustang console and floor shifter. I like your idea and have been wanting to do a floor shifter. Keep me informed on what you find out

Why not just use a floor shifter from a 69/70 Mustang like the one I posted above & then just make a solid linkage rod to go to the trans shift lever, then you could probably keep the full length console from the Explorer.

@Adam: I want to stay with the Escape/Mariner console because it has the proper opening to fit the trim bezel

@Jim: Get right on that! LOL

@Mike: If I go that route, I won't have any of the interlock features like the shift lockout or no start in gear as well as no OD button on the shift handle

This is still in the alpha-planning stage, so it might change again before it gets done!

I'm going to check on a 2005-2012 mustang console tomorrow at work. The v6 car has a 5r55e. I cant remember what the front of the console looks like
