I grew up with V8s and muscle cars. When I got my 2nd ranger it was a 99 4x4 4door 4.0L V6 and I always thought there should be a V8 option. I passed that one on to a friend at 200k after I bought a 2007 4x4, 4door, 4.0L SOHC V6 sport model.

I've been wanting to do some upgrades as I'm jealous of those here who already have. Looking in on the explorer V8 swaps and the Eaton M90 supercharger addons I'm split as to which would be the best bang for buck.

The output for the 99 V8 Windsor and my 07 SOHC V6 are pretty close. I need to pass vehicle emissions test and be street legal. What I'd like to know is, what kind of upgrades you can do to the Windsor V8 and still be smog and street legal and what gains in torque and horsepower you might achieve vs adding headers, exhaust and a supercharger to my V6. I dont have barrels of money to make my dream truck but I'd like to boost the performance. I'd love to hear pros n cons of both.

You will find A LOT of support over here for doing a V8 swap. Sure you can trick a V6 in to thinking it is an 8 but it will never sound as good that is for sure.

As far as the street legal thing, someone else will have to chime in on that FORTUNATELY I live in a state that you can get away with "motor murder". Others here have had to deal with the legalities and can give advice.

I have been keeping an eye on the 3.0L engines available in 2 of the local auto junkyards. For the prices they are charging for a V-6 with less than 150k I can get a ODBII 5.0 with the computer and wiring for about the same price.

Emissions would no longer be an issue. Here in GA if you install an engine that was not factory available an exemption is granted for emissions.

I have never ever ever re installed a 3.0
I despise them
2.8, 2.9. 3.0 = boat anchors LOL

We convert 3.0 rangers to:
4.0L OHV with 5 speed
or
5.0L with 4r70w and RWD or 4x4 t case
make the BEST rangers IMO

Sohc 4.0L engines can make some serious power also I am just not a huge fan of their plastic components and timing chain assemblies. Of you go SOHC 4.0 and longevity you get good at pulling and installing your engine often..........after 2002-2004 they were much better. Maintenance is everything with the 4.0l overhead cam
Must run full synthetic
must change oil often
4.0 SOHC...You should change your cam tensioners at 90K miles with Ford parts only!!! Nobody does this and we see 150-250K from these engines. I have seen 400K from the OHV and 5.0L engines without PROBLEM

The output for the 99 V8 Windsor and my 07 SOHC V6 are pretty close. I need to pass vehicle emissions test and be street legal.
You cannot put a 5.0 in your ranger and pass emissions in lower 48
last year of 302 was 2001
2007 ranger you would have to use a triton small block and that complicates things

With that said
the 302 and the 4.0L Sohc make similar power from the factory...but the 302 can make BIG power more easily
start adding bolt ons and it will smoke the 4.0
there is no replacement for displacment

For you I would consider a supercharger and tuning for your 4.0L SOHC engine
You can start with some simple breathing mods CAI and good flowing exhaust, 2.5" single exhaust is good for sohc
Keep your auto trans COOL

I live in Washington state near seattle and my truck was from California. I use valvoline full syn and change every 5k. It has 130k and really purrs. First thing I did when I got it was add an additional trans cooler.

My biggest problem is finding a good shop to do the work. I'm mechanically inclined but I'm short on time and dont have much experience working on engine internals. I've found a kit from modd box for supercharging. But as far as the V8 swap I've yet to read enough stuff to give me confidence to attempt not have I found anyone I have confidence doing it.

Im finishing siding and windows on my house but once that's done all my fun tickets go to the truck. If anyone has a shop and the expertise I'd be up for arranging the project around this time next year....I'll travel

I have been building engines and converting to different engines for many years - not Rangers, but the same basic questions apply.

The first is how do you drive it - no point putting in an engine that needs revs to produce power if you change early and rarely rev above 3000 rpm. Engines with milder specs often produce more power at low rpm than the highly tuned engine.

The second is how much power do you NEED - this may be different from what you would LIKE - and almost certainly different from what the engine tuner will want to sell you!

There is never any substitute for capacity !

In your case the best bang for the buck would be the Eaton m90. A good donor expo with all the parts and decent mileage would probably be about the same money. But the Eaton would be quicker and easier to do. I have an 06 4x4 ext cab with the 4.0 soch and an auto. I've done the basic bolt ons cold air kit headers under drive pulleys flowmaster cat back and for what it is it runs damn good. My wife has a 96 expo 5.0 and it won't touch my ranger. The only real advantage my wife's expo has is she gets 18mpg I get around 14mpg and her expo sounds way better then my 4.0. But yet I still want to V8 swap my ranger just cuz it would sound cool. But to each there own. This is just my opinion take it how you want and good luck

Coyote would be sweet but I think it would be better if I had just a rear wheel ranger.

How much power do I NEED? Just enough to have fun. I dont need a street outlaw ranger. I do have a lead foot and like to push the loud pedal but I'm leaning toward the Eaton m90, headers, and dual exhaust for the short term.
I'll keep my eye out for an explorer or mountaineer to get the interior and possibly do the V8 swap later.

MR. BOB has done all the mods I want. I wish I lived next door to him. Lol.

All that work and $$$ that went into your 4 banger or 3.0 could have gone towards a nice v8 that will outlast 3 of those other engines

302 GT40 from ATK engines, 370 crank HP
302 was fitted with explorer timing cover, waterpump, damper, and ready to go into a TTB truck
Yes those are torque Monster headers designed for a GT40p into TTB Ranger fitting on Edelbrock aluminum heads......

410customs do you have a project or build thread going?

In preparation for the explorer/mountaineer V8 swap for my 2007 4door sport 4x4 what year and model doner should I look for? I've read people having trouble with motor mounts. I've also read 1998-2001 are the preferred year is this correct? I'd like to keep my truck rear wheel/4x4 unless AWD/4x4 is the only option. I'd also like to get leather buckets, console and a few other things.

Eddie Money you cannot put a 5.0 into your 2007 and still pass emissions

I have many threads on several different sites, I have been building these things for 20 years now. I can point you to a few different locations.
I will be starting new build threads right here.
I think I have sold my V8 Ranger so I am starting on a 94 Ranger rehab this week, also have another 99 in the cue will probably get a 4.0 and 5 speed. I will be building a RWD 5.0 Ranger very soon also as I have a RWD 5.0 drivetrain downstairs.

You need to decide if you want a 5.0 in your 2007 or not, the last year of the 302 (5.0) was 2001 so if emissions is a concern for you then you must use a v8 engine from a 2007 or newer. So for you I would consider a 5.0L SNAKE engine or a 3.5L Eco boost swap :)
Using engine from a 96-01 explorer will not work in your 07

Well I feel it could pass with a 5.0 depending on what state your in . Here in Texas we have emissions 24 or newer in the major city's (Austin , San Antonio, Houston , Dallas and El Paso areas . I was a state inspector for 8 yrs and with that . They only thing our emission computers are lookin for 96- up ob2 is for codes for cel and readiness status on the monitors. Usually a tune can take care of that if there's certain codes like me and the evap codes I throw for tank pressure , etc . My truck was a pre obd2 chassis that is wired now to obd2 . I can read ,graph and datalog on my scanner on the stock Ecu . Granted I'm a 94 and only have to do tailpipe gas inspection which was my last year this year . 95 and older only get gas tested til they hit 25 years old . Then they're safety only no emissions . Tail pipe testing is actually stopping in the next year or so also cause 96 up is computer inspected. So with all that long statement said lol find out exactly what your guidelines are for your emissions in your county/state . California has some of the strictest guide lines and would be one of those where I would say probably not and would have to swap like 410 said above . Other states I'm not currently up to date on their emissions

CA and Denver Metro area are similar I know those two well. I am pretty sure he said he was in CA, in the great country of California you cannot use a 5.0 in a 2007 Ranger.
EDIT He is in Washington near Seattle....dang son you are only 3.5 hours from me. Bring me your 2007!! Ill convert it to a 5.0 :) Let me look into Washington emissions laws for you
Washington is pretty strict alot of CA rules have been adopted up this far North...lets do some digging.

Now if emissions is not a concern I say LETS DO THIS
2007 will need some serious customization to talk to the 5.0 drivetrain, working backwards in many aspects so to speak....they are wired differently but at the end of the day its still a 98+ ranger so a 5.0L can go right in....just need somebody who knows what they are looking at and why (Like me!!)

Ok I'm in!!! You're my new best friend. Lol. I've been looking for someone who can do this. I've had a hard time finding anyone who is knowledgeable on rangers and capable. Sounds like you've done it a few times. If it wont fit my states requirements I believe they have another option for hot rodders who build custom cars. I just want all my modern conveniences to work and feel like it came that way. If that was an offer I'd like to discuss it seriously. I'm definitely interested.

Yes that was an invite, this is what I do build modded RBV's for like minded people. I have references and many build pics. I run a private (invite only) shop from my house. My stepson has been working with me for 10+ years on these trucks as well so together we do rangers/fords/offroad stuff pretty much every day.
I have a desk job, I design elevators for the worlds tallest buildings.. in my spare time we build trucks.
PM me for my email address and we can go from there.
I can call the Washington state emissions and see if this a conversion they will permit

Here are a few of the 5.0L I/we have done:
1984 ranger, this is the one with the ATK crate engine, fresh custom built 4r70w and twin sticked Np205
dual batteries, air conditioning and cruise control into a Gen I Ranger with radiator tuck, TMH headers, 365 hp

1940 Ford F1 body on 1997 explorer 5.0L AWD
ABS delete, all wiring customized to fit in drivers kick panel, battery behind drivers seat, much much more

My 1988 Bronco II converted to v8 in 2005
gt40p 302, 4r70w, 1354m, 4 wheel disc, dual ARB lockers, A/C, Cruise, Heated seats, custom long travel suspension on 35" tires, daily driven

We do v6 stuff too

1998 Ranger 5.0 conversion (done several of these)

My old 96 E303 cam TMH headers, 4.10, 1.6 FMS roller rockers, and more..

My old 2001 Mounty premier:

1999 Ranger 302, 4r70w, 4406m, 2007 interior, I just sold this baby today

I live and breathe 5.0, conversions and all things RBV

If you do see a 5.0L Ranger they almost always have a distributor, not mine
These are all OBD2 full factory like conversions emissions compliant and daily driven

When doing the explorer V8 swap do you end up with an AWD or can you have RWD/4x4? What engines and bolt ons can you use and still meet state emissions? Or is Windsor and Eaton m90 supercharger the best combo with out breaking the bank?

very rarely do I ever keep the AWD
we almost always do RWD or you can pick from a few different T cases and get 2hi, 4hi and 4 low

My favorite t case is the BW 4406 manual shift, works perfectly here because from the factory they were often found behind the 4r70w in the F150 and they will fit the Explorer/ranger with virtually no modifications

A mild emissions camshaft (like the Ford E303), a supercharger, headers, intake spacer, full CAI, custom exhaust of your choice (H pipe can be hard to fit in 4x4 ranger), tuning, larger injectors, aluminum heads, it can all be done and still be emissions friendly.

The exhaust setup I use the most is called a super single, basically both banks stay separated until they reach the muffler. We do primary cat converters, then both banks run into a dual in single out muffler and run a 2.5" or 3" pipe out the back (depending on your power levels) Let the muffler scavenge the two banks together, this is a very "torquey" setup perfect for a truck

I watched a video of a ranger with dual exhaust that didnt have a crossover or H pipe. The exhaust would switch sides. It looked really awful. I ran a H pipe with cutouts on my old cars do that's what I'm familiar with . I read there is another method that is. Similar and often used on rangers but I forget what its called. I'll look into the set up you described
