So a short back story to the truck.  I commute about 110-120 miles a day, 17-18 days a month.  When i started this commute in February 2015.  I bought a little 1997 Saturn SL2 with a DOHC motor and a 5 speed.  It was good for the commute.  Reliable, cheap and did 38mpg.Then my mom decided to give me her 2003 Mazda Protege5 because she'd bought a Fox Body.  Now, you might ask why would an old lady give her 37 year old son a car?  Well she used some money that my dad left her to buy the car, and it felt sentimental.  So i sold the saturn and drove the Mazda.  I like wagons, its a wagon, so it worked.
Then some pilluck in a box truck rear ended and totalled it.  I used the money from that, plus the injury settlement to buy a 1997 BMW 540i with a 6 speed.  Why you ask?  I'm a sucker for fast 4 doors(i've owned a 2005 cts-v, a 2013 WRX, a 2014 Audi S4).
Being a bmw newb, I f-ing taken on this car.  I spent every minute not driving, fix it.  I quickly grew tired of this.  Knowing that I only had this commute for another 6 months, and also knowing that my oldest was going to be driving in about 2 years, I figured now was as good as time as any to buy him a car, and just drive it myself for a little while.
I searched high and low, looking mostly at Toyota trucks.  I couldn't find one in my budget(under 5k) with the miles and options i wanted(under 200k, sr22e, 5 speed)
So i went looking at rangers.  The requirments on this were under 150k, automatic, extra cab, 4 liter.
In September I happened upon this truck.  It was owned by an over weight, elderly man with health issues who could no longer drive it.

After some back and forth we settled on 4300 and I took it home.Rust free, no major issues and I was happy.
From the Paperwork I found in the truck they'd owned it almost ten years.
Its a 1999 4wd extra cab xlt with an auto, 3.73s, and was mostly stock.  Save for some ugly wheels, and the westin steps.
When purchased, it looked like this.

It had a few issues when i bought it.  Whiny ps pump, leaking vc gaskets, the ranger clunk, and the ride was atrocious.  the arm rest was broke, as was the seat back.  Both the fault of his weight, and immobility.  It also was missing the drivers fog light and the lower valence was broken.

After bringing it home, I do what any good mechanically inclined person does with an unknown rig.  I did a full service, air filter, plugs, wires, oil, oil filter, trans fluid, trans filter and a good going over.
At this point I noted it needed front brakes.  The pinion seal is leaking and i had some bulbs out in the dash.
In early October I fixed the ranger clunk with the kit from ford.  I put new napa rotors and pads on the front.  I installed a reman'd ps pump and flushed the system.I threw some new wiper blades on the truck.
I pulled the cluster and replaced all the bulbs.  I also fixed the shift indicator cable.

I also installed some stock tail lights to get rid of these

At this point, everything was peachy keen, until I hit a deer.
That damaged the front end, both drivers doors and my pride.
At this point, the truck sat for a few weeks while I rounded up some parts.  New battery, head light, corner light and i had the truck drivable again.

In this picture you can see I have replaced the fog light, but not the valence yet.  I fought to get the lmc one on, and I eventually modified it to fit.

Here's the truck pre-valence
And Post

A couple weeks later I found a door at the wrecking yard, and bought it.  I also bought a cluster from a 2001 explorer sport and installed it.

Today, the truck now has 155,550 miles give or take.  I put some new tires on it.  Very old man looking.
265/75/16 Pathfinder AT's.  They ride quiet, and are much less harsh than the E rated BFG's that were on it.

Up next is to replace the rear drums and shoes, install some bilsteins and fix the leaky pinion seal.  I am going to head to Norfolk in may, and am taking the ranger.  I plan to chronicle my road trip there, and eventually back here too.

I fixed the arm rest with a new steel bottom from dorman and a new pad from ford.
I also took the drivers seat apart, and took the back off.  I swapped with the passenger seat back.  I drive alone 99% of the time, so its fine.  When my son starts driving i will comb the wrecking yards to find him a seat back.

Todays project was supposed to be shocks, rear brakes and a pinion seal.

I didn't get to the pinion seal because I ran out of time before my kids got home.

I also decided I will never ever ever replace drum brakes again. I will covert everything to discs. Period.

Helpful tip...
I think everyone needs one of these...
A great impact

Ok, so onto the truck.
Here's the part numbers for the brakes

Drivers side before tear down

Passeger side put together

Here's the old rear with the new... i think half of my ride quality issue is that the shocks are to long

Installed

Fronts

installed

Here is why the pinion seal is getting done

Having a big fancy shop doesn't save you from the wet and cold if you're stupid. I left the bed full of snow. it melted. when i jacked the front of the truck up, all the water ran out onto the floor.

I don't know why, but working on the simple cheap Ford stuff is almost therapeutic to me.

Anyway, looking good, but i also gotta ask, what's the Ranger clunk?

The slip yoke on the two piece drive shaft dries out.  They clunk in and out of gear and on acceleration.

Finally decided to fix the leaking rear end.

Here's the evidence

When I removed the yoke i found a groove wore in it, so i installed a speedy sleeve to help out. I installed a new seal and some gear oil too.

I have about 10 liters of 75w90 gm synthetic gear oil left over from when i cleaned out my dads shop. So i used it. I know its not the perfect weight, but its good enough for diesel rear ends, the rangers will be fine. No additive because I have an open rear end.

I also changed the oil on the truck. 5 quarts of motorcraft semi-synthetic 5w30 and an motorcraft FL-1A filter. I go with these because I drive a lot of freeway, I do 5k oil changes, and they are only about $25 for both at my local wal mart.

Washed the truck, decided to add a few pictures of it in normal, running form. This is how it looks daily as I drive it. I am normally in it alone, so i have everything in the cab just how i like it.

Upgraded the tunes today.

My little helper

Very basic setup, some polk 5x7s in all 4 doors and a basic kenwood deck. It allows me to stream my podcasts and plays my thumb drive. Basic sound for a basic truck lol

got the canopy cleaned up and on the truck. It came off another 99 ranger, and fit great. I'll admit the body lines of the topper suck, but for $100 it'll do. It'll give me a place to keep my stuff dry when i drive to VA and a place to keep my head dry when i go camping.

That's quite a deal for 100 bucks, looks in really good shape. I like it that the side windows open also.

I had to replace a few screws in the outer shell that leaked, and replace the handles because they were no keys. But im still less than $150 into it.

Well in preps for the trip i'm taking and give me something to do in virginia, I built a sleeping platform.  Plus, it'll allow my son to use it for camping.

I need to get some outdoor carpet to cover it, but i like it.  Its 24x72.  Most camping pads are 20x72 so it's big enough.  I crawled up on the bed and laid down, i fit good, and my son is smaller than me.  Plus the dog likes it.

Today was a big day on the truck.  Fix the last thing wrong with it, do some pre-trip maintenance and give it a once over.

I spent about 4 hours replacing all the intake gaskets, pvc valve, belt, hoses, did an oil change and a coolant flush-ish.

The parts(coolant is on the ground)

Most of the tools(my hose clamp tool is missing)

the patient

I am pretty sure all the gaskets I removed were OEM.  I know the hoses were for sure.
