Ah, okay, that makes sense! It is a really nice looking cover and a decent price for what it is.

Yeah, I like that cover. The extra strength wouldn't hurt, either. I think that's what I'll go with. *Tab pinned*

Well guys, I've made some more progress today.

I got the diff cleaned up, brake lines removed for painting, and the rear stripped of it's drum brake assemblies. Tomorrow is supposed to be nice, so it'll get a coat of black enamel paint.

The bolts put up a bit of a fight on the backing plates, and they look pretty cheesed. When we pulled the Mustang backing plates, they came apart real easy, and we saved the bolts. So the Ranger bolts are going in the trash and the Mustang bolts are going to be used.

They appear to be the same, so I doubt this will cause any issues.

Oh, and I hardly touched the cover. It's only bolted on right now to keep the gears clean.

But, I gotta wait a little while before I can proceed on getting that rear end put back together after it's painted. Matter of funds and waiting on parts.

Until then, I'll be moving in on those power doors.

The passenger side will be a breeze. Old one comes off, new one goes on and the harness gets plugged in. Done like dinner.

Driver's side... Not so much. That big ol' plug behind the dash will need some extra wires added to one side and then to the door plug so those power options have something to connect to.

I stripped what I needed from the donor harness and found out I'd need to do some investigative work. One yellow wire goes to the power mirrors, but there's a total of 4 yellow wires in that harness. Using a circuit number, that wasn't too hard to figure out which was the one.

However, there are two orange/light green wires in that harness. I hunted and hunted through my schematics but didn't find anything.

Eventually I just looked at the harness itself. One goes to the door speaker, and the other and the power mirrors.

Unfortunately my diagram of that big plug doesn't go beyond pin 52, which really sucks because in this case, neither wire is listed. But.... I do have a way to figure out which is which without burning something up by trial and error.

I looked back at the speaker diagram and found it's matching wire. If I probe on the opposite wire with my meter (measuring AC) with the radio on, only one OG/LG will show some AC ripple. At that point it's just a matter of marking the wire appropriately and going from there.

So, even though I don't have all the wires 100% figured out, I have ways of figuring out what little remains.

Of course I will have to take the dash loose to get to this plug. Not looking forward to that.

Wolfie, you may find those additional pin/circuit ID numbers at http://www.bbbind.com/tsb-wiring-diagrams-database/. It does require registration now (didn't used to), but it is free and quick. Also could be handy when you need to know something about your donor Expo when you get it.

Primer all around.

Not going for show-room perfect, just less ugly.

I used plain old rustolem grey primer. I'll follow it up here soon with high performance black enamel, also from Rustolem. That stuff sets up hard and seems to last a while, too.

More parts came in, also. All three soft lines, two outer tierods, and one lower control arm. Haven't figured out if it's left or right yet.

Progress!

The diff has been painted black and now is sitting out back to cure. I figure I'll leave it out in the sun for a day, let those UV rays and the warm weather get that paint rock hard. All that's holding me back is the lack of a good carbide blade and a sawzall that won't kill me. That and I'm waiting on bearings, seals, and clutches to come in. I'll need to order that cover, too. Not too far off, though!

Lookin' good, I say. Certainly an improvement over what I had.

Once that was done, I moved on to the doors. Driver's side door harness has been swapped in the new door, so I have a plug now. Not much to see there.

However, the passenger side door is now on the truck and plugged in. Passenger side is all good to go, electrically. Tried the door locks and they seem to work just fine so far. Circuit is incomplete for the windows, and the mirrors. That said, the fuse box and the relay box under the dash have all that they need. Now I just need to do some work to get to that big ol' plug.

Which brings me to the plan. I'm going to pull out the interior next. I need the room to get the dash out, and I need to get the parts out so that they can be dyed. So, that's the next step. The dash is also going to come all the way out and onto a chair. Might as well at this point, and it will make getting those wires run much easier. That said, the majority of the interior won't be going back together until the engine swap is done and over. That will give the dye plenty of time to cure. They'll take a break up in the attic in the meantime after dyeing.

When it's ready to drive the truck to another garage, I'll put the dash and one seat in so that it can be driven.

That said, I need to aquire some things. Not much.

Vinyl floor to replace my carpet.
06 textured power mirrors.
Something to fill those door panel holes with. I'm thinking a marker light...
An RGB strip.

....Which leads me nicely into my next change. I'm going to make an upgrade to my  gauge cluster and HVAC. I've just got blue LEDs at this moment. I'm going to replace them with a single strip wrapped around the inside of the cluster. That combined with the controller I have will let me bask in the sweet glory that is RGB slow fade. I'm a sucker for that. That same controller will also allow me to tune the brightness much more than what the stock dimmer does.

Also, speaking of lighting. I used to have turn signal mirrors, until they got damaged due to how I had the wires run. How would you guys go about adding turn signal lights to these 06 mirrors? Unfortunately thunderbolt 06 mirror glass isn't a thing, otherwise I'd do that.

I now leave you with more progress pics. Interior is a bit messy, at the moment!

So, bored searching intensifying here. I can never make things easy, can I?

I'm putting together another rockauto order, and I noticed that the mirrors for 06 are specified as non heated. So, naturally I conclude that there's a heated version. Of course the Ranger never got it, but the Explorer did, I'm sure.

So I look under the 2006 explorer, and I see a mirror that looks identical, but with heated glass and a puddle light. Sweet, right? However, I'm unable to confirm if it fits or not. Doesn't seem anyone has tried, or at least hasn't posted about it anywhere if they did.

That said, I also want turn signal mirrors. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like there's an 06 mirror from Ford that does have puddle lights, heat, and turn signals. I just want everything, don't I?

Enter, Muth. They sell 06 mirror glass that is heated with a signal built in. Now if you go look, you'll only see one pigtail and that's for the signal. No connector for the heating element. The page states that all glass is heated unless otherwise specified (except motorcycles), and nowhere does it appear to state otherwise. So, I emailed them and I hope to hear back. Next thing you'll notice is the price. Yeah, ouch. $200.

I could get the glass from Muth, and a pair of textured housings with good puddle lamps from the junkyard and put them together. Junkyard mirrors would be way cheaper than new ones. New expo 06 mirrors run about $73 a side.

I'm contemplating my best option here. I don't *need* all those features, but I think it would oh so totally ramp things up having them.

If I do wind up with heated glass, then there's the issue of wiring them. Moreso the switch than anything else. I could tap it into my switch panel that has some space left in it, or I could do a bezel swap and use the expo bezel w/ expo heater switch for an OEM look.

Holy options, batman!

Oh, and Fedex says the rest of my parts will be here tomorrow (the 24th).

Well, you know me; I LOVE luxury options and creature comfort mods. I know you miss your custom signal mirrors and the heat plus puddle option is way cool. You COULD snag a set of Expo power/heated/puddled mirrors at the U-Pull, then mod them with turn signals like you did before... only this time, the mirrors will have the proper channel to install the signal wires. What have you got to lose?

Sun? What the heck is that and why is the grass still green? LOL

Wicked good progress I like the ideas with the mirrors
I have no idea if Gen III Explorer mirrors will fit the Ranger, I don't think the bases are the same.

I recently installed some over head storage in the shop. I love it! Wire baskets that hang from the ceiling joists with a winch mechanism...a sort of cargo elevator storage basket...I love elevators of all sorts. The overhead storage is the PERFECT place to put all of those interior pieces, seat parts, plastic bits while they cure from the dye or just to keep them up and away from rodents and pests. Each bay in the shop will have two of these to help keep things organized and clutter up and away from harm.
Finally mouse proof storage!!

I found these open box special on Amazon for like $85 each....I have my eyes on 4 more of them, so handy! Tall ceilings help (my shop is 12') but not required.

Keep it up, I know I am seriously enjoying this thread :)
So far so awesome!! Merry Christmas!!!

It actually got up to 65* yesterday! :)  Makes for easy prep work outside. We both did painting yesterday, so full sun and unseasonably warm temps made that MUCH easier.  Painting in our attached suburbian garage with mama's Lincoln parked in there is a sure way to meet your maker prematurely! :'(  The grass is mostly dead and brown, but there are some parts that still remain green... not uncommon here in Southern Indiana.

Yeah, this weather may not be unusual for our area, but it still doesn't feel right. Not complaining, though.

That said, I think the JY may be my best bet. Unless I absolutely want to pay 73 a side for new parts.

Small amount of progress.

The rest of my parts came in, all except for a bottle of friction modifier.

Took off the driver's side door, and I'll be leaving it off for the time being. That will make things easier to wire in those power options.

I fiddled around with my manual 06 mirrors, and unfortunately didn't learn too much. The glass just pops out, not even glued in. Unfortunately I could not figure out how to get the main body off the triangle mount.

So, if those expo mirrors don't fit, I guess it's game over. Unless I buy heated glass and add the puddles myself. We'll see what happens.

If the heated mirrors work out, I'll wire them up using the factory switch and run my own circuit, using a volvo timer relay to shut them off automatically.

In the explorer, this same thing is accomplished but with the GEM being the timer. Now, I could try and see if I can use the GEM for a more OEM approach, but the end result is the same with the Volvo relay without much hassle. Trying to tap the GEM here sounds like a good way to over complicate the situation. I'm going to try and get out there Thursday and get a set of mirrors if possible.

Tomorrow, I'm going to dive in and start getting stuff wired. I must admit, I'm not looking forward to it. I'm a bit nervous, and the prospect of getting that wiring done is a little overwhelming, but I know I can get it done.

Odd how this is making me nervous but not the engine and tranny swap. Weird. It's my goal to have working power windows, mirrors, and locks by Saturday. Not sure if that's realistic or not, but that's the goal.

That's absolutely realistic! I've seen you in action many times since you got this truck. You will have those power options working like a charm ahead of your schedule. :)

Merry Christmas to all!

I made more progress today, and I have photos to prove it.

I have been gifted tools, a couple of which were put to work immediately. The star of the show was a new Chicago Electric sawzall with Diablo blades.

I thought I would need a carbide blade, I was wrong. I got a five pack of plades, technically six. I think. I forget the fine print, but it was a pack of diablo bi-metal blades with a bonus carbide blade.

I tried a bi metal blade to see if that would cut the mustard on those backing plates, and Diablo ate it for breakfast.

I laid out some sharpie lines according to a how-to over on a neighboring site. Left plate got cut and fit the first try. Right side, not so much.

I laid out the left over the right as a template and made marks from it, forgetting that the sharpie's thickness would throw the dimensions off, thus the slot was too small for the axle tube to fit. No problem. I whipped out the angle grinder with a grinding wheel and went to work opening up that channel.

Here's my setup. I used as many bolts and clamps as I could (including an old caliper bracket) to hold the pieces together firmly, so I could again use the one as a template. No precision necessary here. I say it worked rather well. Not all the bolts wound up doing anything. Unfortunately I got too far in and nicked the backing plate where I didn't want to. Oh well, no big deal. I doubt you'll even see that minor damage when it's installed.

In the last photo, you can really see just how much material needed to be removed. Angle grinder made short work of that, though.

After they got cut, I hit them with a coarse wire wheel on the angle grinder, primered and painted. That same process was repeated for the ends of the axels, dust shields, anti moan brackets, and other components. They'll set up and harden over night, and then tomorrow, things will be assembled. Also, I have the clutch packs soaking in gear oil. A ziplock back on a shelf makes that easy. I also took some time to clean up the fasteners.

Once the backing plates are on, I'll shoot a bit of black on the bolts and nuts to pretty them up. They're just prepped and degreased, no paint. Tomorrow, we assemble.

Well, that's all I got for now. See you lot tomorrow!

I've got to say, you really made progress, in my opinion. After Christmas morning festivities and installing your gift to your mother, you got a seriously late start but still got a LOT accomplished. Yeah, the new tools helped with that and I am glad we decided to go that route for your Christmas!

Dry fit. Had to do a little bit of grinding to get the right side to fit up right. There was a glob of weld at the flange that got taken down, and a relief bevel got put in on the bracket itself.

It all fits up nice. Brake lines (not shown) will need some work, though. For now though, I need some things and I'm out of spending cash. So that means I'm moving onto electrical.

I could not obtain a volvo relay at the JY. I can get them off ebay for cheap, but I cannot obtain any information as to how these are wired. So, I've given up on that volvo relay path. Instead, I ordered a timer PCB that will do the exact same job. This one is adjustible from 0 to 100 minutes, so I can set it to exactly where I want it.

I did attempt to get some 06 expo mirrors and succeeded. But, they don't fit up right. The curvature is correct, but nothing else is. That said, I managed to swipe the glass from them. Hopefully the glass fits power Ranger mirrors. If it doesn't, well I guess I'm just screwed on that front.

the curves match up eh? What was off the bolt pattern or just the way it lays on the door?
Axle looks awesome! IMO there are only three good colors for brake calipers, red red or red

It appears that Ford took the bolt pattern and shifted it down a significant amount, and relocated the center locating pin+plug downward as well.

A guy with some fab skills could probably make it work. I, however, am not that guy.

So I'll make my own heated puddle mirrors, with blackjack and hookers!

Here's some photos.

If you put some grease or paint on the mirror studs to mark their location you could drill those and either drill or sawzaw the wire pass through. From what I've seen you do so far, I'd be confident you could handle that

You're welcome. I figured it was worth getting at least some photos showing why it won't work.

It's sort of close. I appreciate the vote of confidence, I think I could get them on the truck, too. But, given how easy it seems it will be to add those same features to a set of mirrors made to fit the door, I feel the modification route will make things easier.

I might be more apt if I had some fab equipment, like a welder. If I could cut out that place in the door and replace it with new sheet metal, drill new mounting holes and mount the mirror, I'd do it. But, I fear that with the amount of cutting and drilling that would be necessary to make these mirrors fit up, it may compromise some integrity of the door. Not that it's under much load.

Like Eddie Money said, a little grease to mark the  mounting spots to be drilled. Once drilled flat washers on the backside with the nuts. File down any protruding plastic edges to make it fit. As long as the drilled out holes do not affect the original mounting holes you can always go back.

You got skills you don't even know about. Go for it.

I might try it later on, on my old doors just to see what happens.

That said, with the uncertainty that holds, the best route for this project (considering the knowledge I do or don't have) is to retrofit features into known mirrors, with full details and photos.

I firmly believe that method is more accessible to everyone. That way, someone who wants those features in their mirrors could obtain the same thing.
Not to mention, there's less at stake. If I screw up a pair of mirrors, it's not huge. Doors on the other hand is another matter.

Progress update coming soon.

I decided to try something new. Let me know if you guys like video style updates, taken throughout the day. I don't talk in front of a camera often, and I tend to stumble and stutter.

In the future, if this kind of thing goes over well, I may stitch them together.
