Dragged home a real prize yesterday, a 2001 Sport Trac 4x4 with 139K, brand new cooper tires and a wicked timing noise

We are putting a 2001 V8 drivetrain in her possibly keeping the AWD t case
This truck will be for sale when done

Our next victim! My wife has done some real miracle work here convincing me to sell this thing instead of keep it. I mean I can't keep them all but a white 01 Sport trac and me go waaaaaaay back. I have always wanted one, I would even give up my Bronco II in exchange for a sport trac, but for now the shop must keep moving forward so we will build this gem and sell it.

This is one clean two owner truck met its demise way too soon with only 139,000 miles on the odometer and the worst part this engine was just "rebuilt" including an oversized piston or two according to the PO. I can't wait to tear the SOHC apart and find out what happened.

The future is bright for this white truck, early 2001 Sport trac! Unmolested all stock except for the leer bed cover

I've always wanted one too. I can't understand why these things were not "popular". How long till the project is done do you think?

The sport tracks have a good following for sure
Once it hits the shop it should take a week maybe two to complete
. Most of the time we are usually waiting for parts it's only a few days of wrenching to remove the v6 drivetrain and install the v8 once all ducks are in a row. Will need fuel pump for sure it's been sitting for a few years moving from shop to shop

Knocked the dust off and sent her into the shop yesterday. Will start pulling the bad SOHC today

Has one bed blemish, otherwise no dents or scars

Fiberglass repair is EASY, maybe we will fix this, maybe leave it for new owner...depends on how the tear down and conversion goes

More to come!!

Sport trac drivetrain is almost out! Yesterday we picked up our V8 donor, a 2000 Limited with 150K :)

The conversion should take 1-2 weeks now. I will get some pictures and start ordering parts

I want this one! My son wants a truck for all the hauling of equipment he does for work, but wants 4 doors because they are going to start a family. This would be perfect.

We will be doing two sport tracs this year, this white one and a silver one. I am always looking to purchase more!!

I love me a sport trac

our patient has some nice new parts!
New upper control arms and ball joints, new lower ball joints, (look to be moog) new sway bar links and bushings, new front brakes, new tires...
Also this 4.0L engine has been "rebuilt" and that is when she never saw the road again.
Engine was not done well
It's okay we can fix that!

Drivetrain is out, today she gets power washed and the donor comes into the shop next to her

SCORE
Been after this truck for a month or so, since the accident
I have a customer who purchased a really nice V8 for his son, then paid us to re do the front end (wheel bearings, TTX ball joints, TRE) full tune up and fluid changes, new brakes, etc.
Then his kid made it almost 1000 miles before he totaled it
So we bought it yesterday and it is the new donor for this Sport trac!!

Hey kids! DO NOT get going way too fast on a gravel road in your new to you V8 limited Explorer, seriously!?!??!?!?! WTF!???!?! Buy your kids with new drivers license a beater! This 98 Limited was like 42K new!! And he just trashed it in less then 1000 miles.

104K miles 5.0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Welcome home

Dad spent good $$$ on TTX parts for this rig

104K miles its just a baby

Hello Tree meet drivers side

I wonder how fast the tree was going.

He was sliding a full 90 degrees to the direction a car was meant to travel.

Is he OK?

My kids had a little Ford Fiesta that cost me £30 and about the same in paint to tart up.

Three of the four actually learned to drive in that car and it was still going strong when I swapped it for a later model :D

Now that is how you teach kids to drive
My son and grandkids are already learning on ATV (9 and 6)
I have a single cylinder Polaris Ace that will take over training just before its time for their first explorer :)
I can tell you it won't be a limited model with a V8!

V8 Donor is in the shop, she's coming apart rather easily, showing the low miles all over

So to summarize from a "doing it" perspective..

You have found it is easier to pull entire motor and trans at the same time. Is this true on Rangers also, and even if you intend on using the transmission you are pulling?

On the donor, easier to remove all the sheet metal first? Is this the way you always do it?

Yes after tearing apart 100 explorers or so you learn some things
We remove hood, fenders, two bosy mounts and then cut the front sheetmetal off
Drop t case and x member pull whole drivetrain right out the front.

FYI a 4.0 and a 5.0 can be stabbed into the truck assembled to the trans, it just takes some fancy angles on the hoist to make it go in........

In the first sentence I was referring to the sport track, pulling its motor. Did you pull that together or motor/then trans or trans/then motor?

Oh I see!
It depends on the truck but usually we start with the engine bay. Remove the front dress and cooling, remove intake plenum drain ps and Evan Ac. 4 engine hold down studs.
Then jack it up drain oil trans and t case
Drop d shafts, trans mount, crossmember and exhaust. Downpipes / intermediate pipe get cut or unbolted. Drop trans crossmember and let t case hang.
Drop starter and t case, converter bolts.
now bellhousing bolts and dipstick hold down bolt, trans lines and wiring.
Drop trans pull engine done

LOL the condensed speed reader version. Understanding completely you do this frequently, some of us have only done it a couple times, most of us not at all. I have done it enough times in the past 2 years to feel the difficulty in some of the intermediate steps.

So you drop the trans before removing the engine... interesting. And removing the plenum allows more back tilt to get to those upper bolts on the bell housing.

So far I have only pulled the driveshaft on a 2wd, I even have a special socket from snap on with an extension built in so you don't lose torque with your impact.

Can you elaborate on pulling the 4wd driveshafts, are they attached to the Tcase by some fastener or do they pull from the Tcase just like a 2wd when un bolted from the rear/front diff?

The rear d shaft uses 12mm 12 point socket, I use 1/2" drive to break them loose then a dewalt 20v impact with 3-6" wobbly extension. I can get all 8 of the bolts this way without the need to jack up the rear axle and turn the wheels. 4 bolts at the axle, 4 bolts at the t case, rear d shaft is out
The front d shaft we unbolt from the front diff with the torx bits, t30 I believe and let the front d shaft hang on the t case when t case is dropped.
The front d shaft is held to the t case with 8ea 8mm bolts. Easier to get to when the t case is on the ground.

The upper plenum is removed to make it easier to get the wiring and plumbing out of the way and also to access the engine mount studs. It also makes it much easier to attach a pull strap to the engine (we use old seatbelt webbing and tie knots around exhaust manifolds).
Then of course, like you said, with no upper intake the 02 sensors, trans wiring, and upper bellhousing bolts are exposed and when the trans x member is removed you can let the t case hang way down exposing the top t case bolts, starter and all BH bolts.

I almost always get all the bellhousing bolts at once from underneath.  I use a 36" extension, again 1/2" ratchet to break them loose then dewalt to pull them out.

Over the years we started to use the air tools less and less as the electric tools get stronger and stronger. I still need the ratchet to break loose the d shaft bolts and bellhousing bolts. Now that we are off grid the electric have pretty much taken over. (Air compressor sucks alot of power, Dewalt/Milwaukee batteries are charged by the sun)

However I am planning a very large gasoline powered compressor for the next shop.
I am also planning to get a dewalt 1/2" electric impact that will do 1200 ft lbs very soon!!

Recently we had a SOHC engine that was seized, so when it comes time to get the converter nuts off its impossible because you cannot turn the engine. IN this case we have to pull the trans back off the converter and then the converter is left hanging on the flexplate (back of the engine)
I have a special high clearance ratchet I use with a 1/4" drive 14mm short socket that will fit between engine and flexplate allowing me to then get all 4 converter nuts off and drop the converter.
There are some tools that are very useful for this, like 13mm speed wrench for some of the t case bolts. The high clearance 1/4" drive for tight spots, and I often use my "through wrench" socket wrench to get stubborn engine mount studs. The "through wrench" will allow you to put a ratchet on the 18mm engine hold down studs even when the engine is complete with nothing removed.
There are shortcuts for every situation, if a truck is going to recycle many times the seats come out and we will sawzall the floor open. This exposes the top t case bolts and top bellhousing bolts on a v8 truck without having to do anything underneath (Like if we are only after the trans and not the engine)

I counted yesterday, currently we have 5 explorer crush trucks, 3 ranger flip trucks and the sport trac with another sport trac on its way next week.
We have crushed 3 explorers and two rangers in the last 45-60 days

When I pulled the V8 from the 97 mountaineer we removed the console and there was a plate already under the carpet. Removing that plate gave us clear access to the two top BH bolts with an extension, I don't think we even needed a swivel it was that high. Too bad I virtually destroyed the console getting it out, it was like 100 deg. out and my glasses would not stay on my face so everything we could break we did. Had that 6 disk CD changer and a few other goodies in the console.

I have lots of Gen II explorer consoles
After the center console 8mm bolts are out you have to pull it backwards towards the back seat, some of them are very stubborn but if you rock it side to side it comes loose every time

The floor access plate is on all RBV 1984-2011
ON the v8 it gives you access to 3 02 sensor plugs, trans wiring, and t case bolts.
The top bellhousing bolts we actually will cut the floor open towards the dash. Two quick cuts with sawzall and you can get the top BH bolts all 4 of them and the dipstick retainer.
However that is usually only for trucks we are not after the engine, otherwise we pull trans and engine together

I sure wished I lived closer to all you Ford surgeons so I could get some hands on experience.  If nothing else, I could hold the beer.

And, I've been looking for a solid cordless impact wrench...will have to check out the DeWalt.
