I need some help. I'm doing a frame swap, I've already sourced some frames near me in good condition, even a whole truck minus engine in good shape. But, I don't know what frame to get. From doing research it seems that nobody really knows a whole lot about the dimensions of the first gen Ranger. I have one and could measure it, but I don't trust myself and my numbers. I looked, and this is as close as I got to a comparison.

First gen Ranger. I have the single cab long bed, circled in red

I want one of these frames, the one circled in red here seems to be the closest match.

Now, the wheel base is 2.4” shorter on the 98+ frame, I figured that would be easy just move the axle back a little.

BUT, the 98+ is 1.8” longer. Would that .6 really be noticeable if I did it right? Would the body somewhat lineup, if I make my own body mounts? Much help is needed here.

Got a lot done today. Removed the radiator, fan, heater hoses, head, intake manifold, carburetor, fuel pump

Before

Super tight squeeze on the intake bolt

Got the head off, this was my favorite part

After
Oh and btw, not a SINGLE exhaust bolt broke, stripped, too tight....every single one came out pretty easy. It's like the truck is asking to be saved

hell yeah lift that bad boy out of there.
I agree with Eddie the videos are awesome
I have been driving my BII for so long, I never had a driveway or garage until I was 35 or so, I built my Bronco borrowing space in friends driveways, garages and some of the work in my dad's old barn. Where there is a will there is a WAY!!!!!!!!!!!

2.3 high rpm turbo
        OR
   Big Ol' V8

Which do y'all think? They would both end up pretty much the same price. Either one would be cool. 9000 rpm screamer, or 5500 rpm monster?

I love me a SVO Ranger
Back in the day there were Rangers running around on the race tracks with 450-650 hp from that turbo 2.3
I've seen them make 700+ horsies before!!!!

I'm a BIG fan of the electric 5.0, the SVO, the 2.3T
I have always wanted to build one so you know the answer I'm gonna give you.
Do you like turbos? Good MPG? Gobs of horspower and torque from a small engine? the 2.3T is a wicked cool setup in a old Ranger........

Well, after I took the head off and looking at the cylinders and the walls the engine looks to be in good shape. There's a ridge at the top of the walls, idk if that's normal or not. But, any 2.3 Lima engine will be able to swap in so I want to find one that's efi, it seems that that's the way to go for a turbo 2.3, it's easier to tune and monitor stuff. Now, I've gotta dive into what it takes to make good horsepower from these without it exploding. I would like 350-400 to the wheel, but don't want a massive turbo that comes on at 4500 rpms. I may have to compromise. It appears that there is some aftermarket support, but not a ton. When it comes to specs and parts and stuff I'm kinda clueless as to what I need. I do know one thing though....2.3 engines are CHEAP around here! $150 for a complete one, that's just the first one I saw too. This will be interesting.

keep it simple to start
A good basic turbo 2.3 with 2.5 intercooler can make a really fun truck.
As usual with a turbo setup keeping the heat under control, head gaskets and transmission together is usually the challenge

I'm liking the new ecoboost 2.3T from Ford also, but those swaps are still $$$$$$$$$$$$
Way before that the Ford 2.3T  (1979-199 I think the Lima four banger was made?)has been finding its way into Rangers since the Ranger...1983

Great reads, awesome information. Thank you! I had already watched the video too lol. I just wonder what the reliability/longevity of the motor is after modifications like that.

Dropping the trans sometime this week, the engine should be out this weekend. I've got a couple of friends from work coming over this weekend. We'll see, getting kinda burned out with not having any of the stuff I need to make real progress on the truck.

People are watching! Dont get discouraged!! Its summer, there is Covid, nobody knows if kids are going back to skoo, if they will have a job, who's gonna run this mess of a country, etc etc.... truck projects and forums tend to  take a back seat to this stuff....but come fall and winter the forums will be hoping again!

Im watching this thread and I know others are too, just keep it up!! the truck will reward you, we are just here to watch and help discuss!!

Thank you.

After doing some research into the 2.3 turbo, it seems very doable (not that a V8 didn't, but I like to be different) and so I'm thinking that, for now, that's the route I'm going. I mean I've already got a 2.3 in it right now. Now, one of the problems with it that I see, is what's the longevity of a motor that can spin 7.5k rpms and make 3-350 horsepower? I can't really find any definitive answer as to how long these engines last like that, but I doubt I'll see the mileage out of it like you'd get from a V8 n/a mild build. The key it appears is to over build it, which makes sense. From the beginning of this build idea I've always, ALWAYS, wanted at LEAST 400hp. With a V8 that's ridiculously easy. With the L4, not so easy. Big cam, pro ported heads, large injectors, forged rods/pistons, turbo, premium fuel...that's just the main things. The cool part is, the cost of nearly all of those parts cost about the same as a base V8 crate engine with stock HP levels. The major foreseeable problem is that 400 would be sweet for a while...then what about 500...then 600 would be awesome.....and so on. Those kinds of numbers are most likely pushing the limits of the 2.3, but a good V8 would love it. But, who says I won't keep the truck at the current power level, use it as a daily (apparently they still get good gas mileage lol) and then build another truck in the future that's just totally nuts? Nobody knows. So, I'm open to suggestions. Go ahead and do a tried and true V8 swap with some simple mods to make good power (most likely gonna be a 351 based engine), or be different and run with the 2.3T?

What about a mazda rotory. Not good on gas but they sound killer on the 2 step and make good power once modded

I know VERY little about rotaries, so that would be a no go. I do know they don't make a lot of torque, and I still wanna use the truck as a truck. Very interesting concept though, I've seen a few videos of them before and when they rev to like 15k it sounds absolutely NUTS. For now I'm keeping the choices between a 2.3 turbo or a 351 based V8. Maybe in the future as my skills develop, my wallet gets bigger (mainly the wallet lol), and my tool collection/shop situation improves, I'll do some the super crazy. My head keeps spinning with so many possibilities that I had to choose two and stick with them. I even considered a huge 460 at one point, lol.

Got another truck build done, lol. Coworker gave me this, his son outgrew it and it was outside so it faded pink. He asked if I wanted it and I said hell yeah! Took it apart to clean it, she loves it. It's a pink Ford F-150, it's pretty cool actually

2.3 turbo time?

I personally think it would help if the build thread was in the project section.......

Holy cute little girl!!!!!!!!!!!
Makes all the hard work worth it!

351 = blah
The 302 based engines 306/327/331/347 have the 351 based engines beat
The 302 just fits the Ranger so much better
big block + Gen I ranger = no AC and LOTS of mods to stuff it in there :)

Do you think that's the way I should go? And yeah, I thought I had this in that section. I there a way I can move it?

Thank you! So you don't think 351?! The reason I'm thinking 351 is what happens in the future if I wanna make this a capable drag truck? Don't 5.0s split at 500hp? The 351 is only slightly bigger than the 302....I think 1.5 inches taller and 2” wider or something like that
