Look at the capability of the F150 for example, almost no owners, certainly outside of company vehicles that specifically need the top end of the truck's stats, use any of them.
It's a huge truck, large power, large size and capabilities.
Most people need the Ranger's size, power(?) and capabilities.
My argument would be that the F150 should be the speciality truck, the niche version for companies or professionals.
Funny you state that.. the entire reason why Nissan had built the new Titan 5.0L Cummins setup was because the filled a gap within the towing/payload debacle. First true story.
Toyota when designing the Toyota Tundra got a 100 tickets to the super bowl, sorry dont remember which one specifically or who played for that matter but.. the whole point was to take advantage of 90,000+ people gathered all in one place where they sent a 100 engineers to pour over every truck on the lot. They made note of every detail.

you get the point.. they went over everything and when they dropped the Toyota Tundra, in its first two years it took a lot of wind out of the sales of Ford F150's and Ford was not happy about that.
Nissan did something similar by reviewing all of the trucks sales and what they discovered was an oddity. 75% of the people who bought F150 should had bought an F250 or larger and that also in opposite fashion 75% of the people who bought F250/350 or 2500/3500 should have bought an F150 or 1500 series truck..
Now whether that's attributed to any one or combinations of egos, good or bad sales people, impulse buying, credit concerns (meaning you wanted/needed bigger, the bank said no you took ANY truck), or just wasteful spenders or cheap asses, is unknown to some extent. but its how Nissan developed the titan to be between an 1500 and a 2500 series style truck.
The year they released the New Titan Cummins engine setup was a year where Ford alone sold over 975,000 F150's alone. Dodge (Ram), and Chevy/GMC near equal to large chunks of their truck sales. Nissan openly admits to being barely the line thickness that separates their competitors but has actually been getting a nice start to more truck sales.
Now would the Tundra or Titan ever reach F150 sales? Not likely but at the same time F150 sales probably would shine much of a light on Tacoma sales either when it comes to the world market, certainly wont see a dozen of F150 or Chevy Silverados racing across the desert with dual .50 cal mounts bolted to the beds in an effort to stave of US Humvees or JLTV's in the latest Middle Eastern terror videos either but...
Just interesting to say the least..
And when we got the Explorer Sport Trac, we basically GOT the world ranger, that's why the similarity is so deep. I haven't had the opportunity to catch a New ranger in person anywhere yet but I would have to think they aren't going to be much bigger than the Sport track and if so, its possibly due to added Tupper-ware like body cladding to add to the chunkiness.
I've sorta been following the vehicle testing of the New Ranger through international sources and contacts, and I think what I like is seeing ford pull its head out of their asses, spending a little bit more money and attention to detail and showing Toyota and Nissan what Ford can do but then at the same time I see that Ford hasnt done that over the last decade or so really being so cheap and selfish to snuff out the US Ford Ranger platform (which I stated for many years was a take it away from them make em' beg for it back marketing scheme) but let Toyota and Nissan push forward with sales, meanwhile Ford increased its sales of F150 because those looking for any sort of entry level truck at all are forced into a less cost effective market. Either buy our more bigger truck which cost of ownership will increase, or buy the smaller but equally priced smaller import trucks. Kind of a wash depending on where you're at in the world i think.
