Are the joints welded or just clamped ?

Also, you may need to remove the pipe and try resizing the "Y" Pipe and the Cat, then refit the Cat, time consuming job !

It is leaking where the flange on the front of the cat mates to the flange on the back of the "Y" pipe, it doesn't seal properly. The aftermarket does not make a "Y" pipe for the 2000 4.0 with out cats so the exhaust shop that did the work for me a couple years ago I am guessing they got an older ranger "Y" pipe & made it to fit my truck.

Every ranger I have owned had that leak. I cured it on 2 of them. It starts when the muffler hanger... the one actually attached to the muffler rots out. You will see a lot of older rangers with the exhaust pipe up against the bed.

It plagues 4.0 and 3.0. the flange clamp is always rotted also, I have 2 piece flange clamps in my tool box to fix these. The flange gasket never fits either, you usually need to split it with a saw and remove a small chunk. it still squeezes and seals.

I currently have this problem with whitey. The flange rusted out and broke. My fix is going to be removing the flange welding both pipes together and a Gibson cat back exhaust

Why doesn't the Aftermarket, make a "Y" Pipe that fits the Ranger !   That somehow doesn't make sense, I can get exhaust systems for car made in the 60's...why not the '01.

As far as an Exhaust Shop not being able to mate two pipes together, sounds funny, that is what they do !   To me the job should have been done perfect as far as the pipe fitment... now if we are talking lousy welding, I could understand.
I worked for a basic Gas Station/Repair Garage, we had tools to fit/reshape exhaust pipes, heat and reform them, weld them up so there were NO leaks, has to be just TODAY'S Shops, if it doesn't go together out of the box then it isn't going to be right no matter what they do.

Funny thing, I will regret saying this, I can not remember ever doing any exhaust work on my truck since I have owned it... 10 years or so !
I know it was garaged with the first owner, I was the second and garaged it for a while but needed the space for the Jeep Project, so The EDGE spent part of its life outside in MA, but the last 5.5 years have been in SoCal, sticky mud but no snow or salt !
I am thinking I need to get under there and take a look.
I had a mechanic do the brakes, and there was a statement that everything was rusted underneath of the truck but I haven't had any major problems, other than the Rear Spring Perches, funny !

The problem I am having is with the flange at the front of the cat conv where it mates to the "Y" pipe, not the flange at the back of the conv.

Well yesterday I insured and drove the short cab (Jalape±o).

There is no way to make this a short story but here is why.

We have a refrigerator down stairs for extra food and overstocked items from our refrigerator on the main level.
I went downstairs to look at a silver Ranger cluster I have which happens to be in the same room as the spare refrigerator.
I smelled this extremely foul odor. Like dead rotting flesh. So I started looking for the squirrel or mouse that I thought was trapped somewhere.
It was coming from the fridge.
I opened it. Almost puked.
I have no idea how long it had been off for, compressor must have taken a crap. I had not been in it personally for over 2 weeks.
So the first hour and a half was spent running back and forth taking deep breaths and holding it so I could remove and bag various hams (one whole ham), sausage packages that were blown up like beach balls, left over meat of all kinds in the freezer then started to mop the rotted meat soup from the bottom of the freezer.
Bleach was in heavy use.
I had the bed of my ex cab ranger full of shrub and ground cover clippings but there was enough room by the tailgate to nest the 2 bags of rotted meat and soupy rags plus bleach.

I needed to go rent an appliance dolly to get this thing up stairs and out of the house it was not staying for one minute more than was necessary.
No place to put the dolly in the ex cab ranger with a bed full of clippings and rotted meat bags.

Solution? Throw insurance on the interior stripped reg cab in my garage and use it!

I've been wanting to drive it for a while and this was an excellent excuse :)

Now for the end.
I take stinky fridge to curb in front of my house.
This morning I hear some commotion outside, I look and a dude was wrestling the fridge in to the bed of a rather nice silverado. I bet he didn't open it first. He put it horizontal. I could imagine the swarm of flies that will be hovering over the bed of his truck before he takes it through the car wash from the meat soup leaking in his bed.

Good points: The uhaul dolly rental guy felt so sorry for me he did not charge me.
I got to drive my other Ranger
The back of the ex cab is empty because I took a trip to work and assaulted their dumpster.
I found the silver cluster.

End of rather lengthy story.

The fact that he drives a Chevy explains a lot

How did they work at night, better or worse than stock ?

I'll get a better picture outside soon. Very easy installation. No drilling. Attaches with body panel pins. Its an AVS from Amazon. $43.

The bulbs are 6000k. Way brighter than stock.

Replaced the fan clutch which had failed and water pump belt yesterday. Took me 45 minutes of actual work and 2 hours of finding the damn screw i dropped. But at least my truck is quiet now, no more squealing on startup and no more crazy fan noise above 2k rpm.

Replaced the fan clutch which had failed and water pump belt yesterday. Took me 45 minutes of actual work and 2 hours of finding the damn screw i dropped. But at least my truck is quiet now, no more squealing on startup and no more crazy fan noise above 2k rpm.
Oh man, when the fan clutch goes bad.... sounds like the garbage truck when its idling up for a crush.

I did a camping trip with my son, before I knew it was bad (the truck is an extra vehicle we only drive it when we do truck stuff). and driving up the mountain was deafening and painful. I get back and tell my wife, and she was like "oh yeah, I'm glad you heard it" When she's driven the truck often over the last few months. She never told me, just expected me to Figure it out on my own...

At least your wife will drive your truck.

Mine won't even ride in mine.

She only drives it when she is doing yard stuff, and I won't let her pick up bags of fertilizer in my Infiniti Q50, for some odd strange reason, she doesn't want to pick it up in her car either. (mostly joking, she loves any excuse to drive my car, over the family hauler a ford flex).
