Every ranger I have owned had that leak. I cured it on 2 of them. It starts when the muffler hanger... the one actually attached to the muffler rots out. You will see a lot of older rangers with the exhaust pipe up against the bed.

It plagues 4.0 and 3.0. the flange clamp is always rotted also, I have 2 piece flange clamps in my tool box to fix these. The flange gasket never fits either, you usually need to split it with a saw and remove a small chunk. it still squeezes and seals.
