Tonight was a lovely night. I was out for a night run with my truck, and something ran out in front of me. That something was.... A deer! Great. First and foremost, I'm OK. Hardly rattled me beyond the initial surprise.

My header panel, valance, and grill are all toasted. Turn signal fixture might be OK, don't know and won't know until I take it apart. One fog light is toasted too. The bumper kinda looks bent, but at 1:30 in the morning I'm not exactly inclined to see if it's actually bent or not.

Besides not hitting the deer at all, my only wish is that the hit killed him outright. I didn't enjoy seeing him there twitching in pain, but was thankful I was able to mercifully end his suffering.

So, I'll need a new grill, header panel and valance, plus a fog light. Maybe a bumper, maybe a new turnsignal housing. Other than that, my hood and fenders are all fine, still completely drivable. Just a little dorky looking at the moment....

I'll post pictures later if anyone is interested. So, use my unfortunate turn of events as a gentle reminder of how quickly things can turn south.....

Stay safe, guys.

Sorry to hear this, and replied in the other thread about the other part of this :(

Yes, get sleep, take some pics of the truck in the morning and get them up in here. Glad you're ok and the truck doesn't sound *too* bad.

So glad you are OK, the truck can be fixed. About 10-12 years ago I had a deer run into the side of my last Ranger when I was driving home from work in the morning, & it startled me for an instant.

Fortunately it was only a deer; in other parts of the country we get to contend with big game animals like Elk and Moose that wander out onto the roads.

Here's some photos.

I *might* be able to save the valance. Not entirely sure. The valance itself around the fog light area is okay besides being pushed in. When the impact occurred, the fog light itself shattered, half of it staying mounted, the other half bouncing down the street (which I did pick up). If you can see through the gap, it's easy to see that the header panel at that corner is gone, and if I'm honest it was in rough shape when I got it.

Someone played with it before me, evidently. I'm hoping I can save the turn signal housing. It *looks* like it got bent downward and the header panel is what broke. That's my hope, anyway. The more I can save the better off I am. All the bulbs (except one fog light bulb) still works fine, so I'm not out anything there.

I'll post up any new information (if I find any) when I take it all apart and see what I actually have. I think we can reasonably say though that there's no frame damage. The deer I hit was actually a young doe, so less body mass and no antlers to deal with, so I got lucky in that respect.

Thanks all for the support.

Looks like you got away with a lot less damage than I expected.

I had a friend take his roof off with a large Buck ran in the street, he was doing 60 when they made contact.

Thank God you are OK and the Truck can be fixed !

Ugh sorry to be the bearer of bad news... the pieces the lights attach to is fiberglass and are busted. Looks like that's what happened in one era to the 98 I am working on. To get the turn signals from pointing down I had to put about a 3/8 spacer worth of washers and use longer screws. You need something to drive for a few days so you can tear it to the core and see what all is really broke.

When you get a new grill make sure it is for a 4wd. They both fit but the horizontal ribs are out more on the 2wd and the vert ones are out on the 4wd. Except for the painted grills that match the truck, on those the 4wd uses the 2wd style for some reason.

That thing looks in really good shape for the year, well worth putting some money in.

Yeah, I expected the header panel to be toasted. Truth be told it needed to be replaced prior, but I never really felt the need to given it still did it's job without issue. Now however... Eh not so much. I can get a new grille and header panel off rockauto for less than $100 shipped, so I'm OK with that. I'm going to try and pop out the valance, as it looks OK, really. I believe we have some spare fog lights still, so if the glass part of one of them is OK then I can pop the reflector portion into it, which to my surprise is OK despite taking a tumble down the concrete.

Tomorrow I'm going to take the grille and headlight/turnsignal assembly off the passenger side and inspect the damage then go from there.

I dented my lower valance and used a heat gun to bring the dent out.

This was result of a 12 point buck I hit about 2 years ago. Took out head lights grill harder panel bumper bar bumper cover fenders hood fog lights ac condenser radiator trans cooler and bent the radiator support. Insurance company wanted to total it so I told the adjuster to stop my claim and forget I called. He estimated it at $4500 in damages I fixed it for about $900 and then my insurance company dropped me after i ended the claim

I've seen worse shopping wind assisted cart damage in a Walmart parking lot.. lol The bad part is the cost of replacing what was completely good parts. Sorry to hear

I'm so sorry this happened to you, I know your pain... If you want, I still have my I-Hit-A-Deer starter pack and no longer need it now. I know it is red but I'd give it to ya for cheap (02 header panel and headlights/corners, just no grille)

Appreciate the offer, but I've already got a 99 header panel and grille headed this way from rockauto.

Took some parts off and the damage was as I expected. Toasted header, the bolts on one of the bumper mounts sheared (bolts holding the bracket to the bumper) so I'll need to replace those. Believe it or not, the valance popped itself back out. Looks to be in good shape still, so I'll continue to use it. Might need some new paint, though.

Heh, some hair(fur?) was actually stuck to the valance.

The header is paint to match, but considering you don't even see it, I'm just going to hit it with some black paint over the grey primer. I could paint it hunter orange for irony sake and nobody would see it until I opened the hood, lol.

Here's where it sits, currently. The passenger side outer flange that the bumper attaches to was bent slightly. Bent it back, wirewheeled the rust away and shot it black. Some other blackened areas have gotten the same treatment.

The chrome bumper was slightly bent and straightened to the best of my ability. Valance was washed, scuffed, and repainted as were the bumper brackets, and I also gave the trans cooler a light dust of paint. The shroud behind the grille is now black, too.

Paint is curing and tomorrow I hope to have it reassembled.

Well,  . I went to put the truck back together and I noticed that my new header panel came prebroken.

I've submitted a claim on rockauto. I should have it together by the end of the week. Really puts a project on hold.

Damn! Anyone reading this, take my advice. Don't cheap out on the economy header panels.

My new one (second one) came in today, intact. However.... This one wasn't made to proper spec. Overall width is correct, but the locations for the locater pins and bolt holes are too wide. If you force it, the header panel will bow out forward. The first, broken, header panel was made to spec it appears.

...Should have bought the more expensive part. Later tonight after my mentor comes home and has a look at it, I'll update whether or not we made it work or I sent in a claim for a third header panel.

Got it back together, yesterday. The second part bolted up fine with a little persuasion. Headlights and all are rock solid. I'll take a photo later tomorrow, if I remember.

I decided to get brand new speed nuts for the turn signals. The originals were very rusty. Wound up going with #8-32 speed nuts (four), and oddly #10 screws. #8s were too loose. Go figure. The other speed nuts were simply swapped over, as they were still in good shape.

Now I need to deal with the fog light problem. One of them is busted and it appears I no longer have any spares, so I'll have to get new ones.

Before I buy them though, I'm wanting an opinion. Should I stick with the reflector type or go with a pair of those projector w/ halo fog lights? I'm hoping someone has some experience with the projector ones before I consider buying them.

Projector foglights?

Likely not worth it unless you suffer from constant actual fog there and need them Vs your dipped beams.

Fogs for me are mostly for show. It's a must have option for me, even though I treat them more like running lights than actual fog lights. I will say though, when we do get fog, boy do we get it THICK.

I remember slowly rolling home from work one night (This was about 4AM, third shift) and the fog was so thick I couldn't see farther than a stone's throw away. I also suck at throwing things with any distance or accuracy, so consider that as well. I'll give it some thought.

My Brother has/had projector fog lights, to me they're just over bright, that could be his messing with them though - if you're status symbolising their use, i'd go for regulars.
