Agreed.. For me it keeps my situational awareness up and although a "Slush-O-Matic" may have some advantages, just like anything else it also has disadvantages.. Add example, the starter solenoid went out on my truck yesterday.. Guess who was able to push start down the slightest of degree'd parking lots?

This guy... ;)

Overall the Manual is just more fun to drive and chicks dig it still. lol

The mechanical rod and level worked for years, I used to rebuild or change engines and transmissions so often the mechanical rod and lever linkage was worked great always adjusted.

Only trouble was when things stretched and I don't mean the linkage, if  you weren't ahead of of the motor mounts getting old, the engine would torque up, motor mounts let the engine lift...  linkage would fall out.   The fix was easy, new motor mounts would work but a chain or Turn-buckle from the block to the frame held things in place; then of course solid mounts... do I feel vibrations !

The biggest problem I encounter with hydraulics is the bleeding of the system, should be something easier than pulling the complete clutch actuation system out and bleeding on the bench.

Until they need to drive your car

I only own 1 slushbox.  My '66 Mustang has the C4 in it.  Ranger, three bikes, last Ranger, all manuals.  My SO has a Subaru 5-speed.  Taught my son how to drive a 5-speed, he drove my last Ranger until it died.  (He killed it!)  Personal feeling is that everybody should know how to drive one.  Even if you don't own one.  The 4.0, the 4X4, and the 5speed were the only requirements when I bought the current Ranger.

I would love to have a manual trans in my DD but a bad left knee restricts it to my play toy 69 Mustang.

I've  encountered  some pretty bad knee and back injuries myself . At 36 now I've  prematurely beat my body into the ground as the doctors have put in  Laymans terms  . So I feel that and driving a manual. By the time I get to the track . My left knee is on fire 🔥 the right starts grinding I feel lol my back has 3  degenerated discs (2 lower, 1 below the neck . I have to wait atleast a hour before I can get back out there . Daily week Austin traffic that's a whole nother story 😡

it is it is funny that you say that my son when he went to go take his driving test 3 years ago was the only student in driver's ed of 54 students that actually brought a manual trans vehicle to use for his test vehicle and his learning vehicle and that was only 3 years ago I call it the millennial anti-theft device LOL

I must confess, I stole it from a buddy's blog. He posted it the day before 410's post.

I made sure both my kids could drive a standard shift and could change a tire before I let them dive by themselves (both millennials). I have a '74 Stingray with a 4 speed Rockcrusher that they learned on - starting off in first was easy with the .410 posi rear end. You could almost dump the clutch and not stall it. My daughter would always chirp the 1st to 2nd shift.

Lucky... My oldest son thinks he's DK from Tokyo Drift.. The fact he can do it is the troubling part, the other is his poor choice in timing sometimes of when to do dumb things.

Is it a cost savings for the manufacturer to go to hydraulics? The cable system worked well for many years and I question the change outside of it being easier to push the clutch in.

who knows
remember these were gas crunch vehicles
Toyota and Nissan mini trucks were coming to USA gasoline was $$$$ Ford/Mazda responded by creating the courier and then Ranger, when they did they snagged engines from Merkur vehicles, the small 2.6/2.8L Cologne V6 and slapped some transmissions behind it. The first autos (C5) were based off the pinto 2.3L C3 automatic (A car) and the manual slush box came from at least 3 manufactures, Toyokogo, Mitsu and Mazda..2 of which use the internal hydraulic slave..... and thats how the nightmare began.

2.6/2.8 and even the 2.9 are not fitted for truck use IMO...not when compared to the bored and stroked 2.9 = 4.0 OHV or even the 2.3L makes better torque down low (before 2500 rpm).

The C4/C5 auto became the A4LD became the 4r55e/5r55e and the 5 speeds eventually settled with Mazda and got stronger and stronger over the years.

Car engines and transmissions do not truck drivetrains make (to put it into Yoda speak)

Like on the way into your driveway? Bad timing for a slide LOL.

Kids get their inspirations from all over, when my dad would ride with me he would wear out the carpet pressing on his non existent brake pedal. He was a cream puff.

I used to "drift" (we called them controlled slides in the late 70's) with my mavericks and later my astre which I welded the spider gears together for the effect.
Mostly dirt roads since we had a LOT of them in Ortonville. Yes that was the name of the town. I had parents of other kids sit me down and alert me as to how dangerous it was and I'm like "not if you practice and know how to do it" so I was not the kid other parents liked their kids hanging out with.

Where did I learn it from and what got me excited? Not dad but a show called "Dukes of Hazzard". I did jump the maverick also and there were dents in the top where 2 of my friends sitting in the bench seat hit their heads. Nobody wore seat belts back then it wasn't cool.

I have to add that knowing what a car actually does when it breaks loose I feel essential to defensive driving. I know of 2 serious accidents I would have endured if I didn't know what to expect when the tires no longer were gripping.

Amen to that..

I would assume that the introduction to cars all started with me not only being in the auto industry but the weekly runs to the grocery store (Meijers) and each boy got to pick out a Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars. Who would have thunk a $ .98 obsession would grow to what it is.

All of my boys (3) are into cars but my oldest decided to follow my own footsteps of tracking cars and working on them. It also didnt help raising them all on Playstation and 4 out of the 5 versions of Grand Tourismo, Driver, among other console titles. Although he hasnt done the power slide in front of the house or up the drive. He has had several issues regarding the usual Turn arounds in Michigan in a power slide drifting through the green and yellow lights and you'd think.. now twice of not noticing the cop sitting in the crowd of cars waiting for the light that your time to show off and have a testicular dumb moment may not be a great thing to do while driving for work, your modded Miata, loaded with customers pizzas... [SMH] Sometimes I wanna cuff him in the back of the head for just not thinking all the time.

Outside of that, hes a great young man but I guess sometimes you do have to let them make some mistakes so they actually learn something. Can't always protect them by sharing experience.

Undrstm8ed, you have stirred great memories in me. I started out sliding around in my dad's 66 Mustang. That was one tail happy pony!
The old Volvo 240 wagon slid around corners very nicely and was easy to control with 4 snows on it. With the kids in the car we "drifted" every corner in the neighborhood and up into the driveway. So much fun! My son would laugh his head off while my wife called me nasty names. My daughter, well she was along for the ride. Her head was full of horses at that time. She is a truck gal now.

Of course when he bought his own car he, too, started doing it. The driveway was a bit rough on his car as there was a pine tree waiting to stop errant vehicles. His was often errant. One thing he didn't understand was his Escort was FWD and the Volvo was RWD. I told him to use the E-brake and not the accelerator. That was the key to a successful driveway entrance.

He has no interest in autos now and lives in a big city so owning one is more cumbersome than advantageous.
