My 2011 Sport 4x4 has the traction control light on. I noticed it once or twice while making a left turn but it would blink on like I broke traction and go back off. Now it's on steadily. Since I originally noticed it while turning I assumed it was a sensor issue in the front.

Are there specific traction control sensors or does it use the ABS sensor? I pulled the front two ABS sensors and cleaned/greased them but they seemed fine. AFterwards, the light is still on. I have not inspected the rear ones yet.

What reasons would my TC light come on?

Just to clarify, the '11 has a traction control button to turn on/off the TC. That is a completely different light on the dash than the light I'm talking about. The truck thinks one of the tires broke loose and is letting me know that. Since it shows this light in 2wd, I'm now thinking it's a rear sensor. I've read about TC sensors in the rear diff as well as the normal ABS sensor in the hubs.

Where and what do I inspect?  Any help is appreciated.

I have an OBDII scanner, but it wont pull a code for the traction control. It says all is clear.

I inspected the two front ABS sensors last weekend and I'll do the rear this weekend just to make sure the wires aren't broken or some gunk is on the sensors. I'm not sure what else to do.

I'm afraid to take it to Ford, they'll tell me its the sensors and charge me $600 just for the light to come back on again.

The 2011 was the last year of the North American Rangers, I've always read they just used extra/leftover parts to rid the shelves of old items at the end of the production year. This 2011 is just as solid as both of my 2002 FX4s were. The gauge cluster does seem a little cheap, and I wish I had the 4.10s, other than that I'm satisfied.

When was the last time you serviced the 3rd member and added the friction supplement with the oil?

I did it back in October, about 3k miles ago.

In my tracker I put that I added the friction modifier. I'm fairly certain I used synthetic gear oil that said it included friction modifier. It was Modil1 or Valvoline if I remember correctly.

I checked my owners manual, it says the light could be due to a crap load of things but to take it to a certified technician if the light is on. I have an SCT tuner and a generic OBDII code reader, neither of which is pulling a code.

The book says it could be the Advancetrac RSC (roll stability control), ESC (electronic stability control) or TCS (traction control system).

My front discs are getting crappy but new ones just came from UPS yesterday, I'm going to replace them tomorrow along with new pads, hopefully that helps.

All new brakes up front and the ABS sensors were inspected and cleaned. I also pulled the rears out and inspected and cleaned them. All seems well, but the light is still on. I hate having and kind of dash lights on.

So I took it to Firestone today to see if their code reader would show anything. Nope, no codes. I have no idea what is going on with this thing.

I also emailed Superlift about buying a kit from them, but I have the stability control that they say isn't compatible. They said the stability control would trigger everytime I turn and would eventually go into limp mode.

Well my stab control light has been on for a bit now and no limp mode. I wonder if pre-keys and pre-blocks would have effected something in the system, like Superlift says their kit does.

If it were me and if it were my problem to fix, I'd go out to my garage like a boss, armed with my lappy (no, not my phone which has FORScan Lite) that's running Windows and has the latest version of FORScan, and using the OBDLink MX already plugged into the OBDII port on the vehicle I'd scan for codes. By doing this I know I'd be scanning all codes but especially the extended/proprietary to Ford codes, not just the generic OBDII codes that all vehicles built in 1996 and up need to make available to consumers, techs, the kids at Autozone (that are virtually guaranteed to NOT have a scan tool capable of pulling the extended codes), people who use Torque and Torque PRO, you get the picture. If FORScan didn't kick up a code(s?) I'd be posting the situation over on the forums at FORScan, where the highly motivated staff (in my experience) would most likely work with you on this. First question would be confirmation and peace of mind that FORScan can see codes pertaining to TC operation (IMO, I'd be surprised if it didn't).

I would also get my hands on the FSM (ONLY the FSM) for your vehicle if you don't have that already and do some reading. If you don't know how TC works, there is probably a section titled something like, "theory of operation". Read it. I'd next move on to diagnostics and/or look for the procedure for diagnosing the code you found using FORScan. Anyhow, food for thought in all this.

Is this something that can be coded out?

ie: with my mini the tire pressure monitor system is a Lucas POS and dies after 40k miles. I coded it out with a BMWScan system so it doesn't show the nag message.

I'd love to be able to do that, unfortunately I don't have FORScan.

I don't think so. Everytime the trucks starts it'll start the code again. There's not a fuse for the AdvanceTrac so it's not even a system that I can disable. From the best I can tell, it drives like normal. The guys at Superlift told me with their lift I would have the same problem and eventually it'd go into limp mode. Hopefully that doesn't happen. I'll likely have to take it to Ford and pay them $99.95 just to diagnose it for me.

Hell, I've had an overdue recall on the Mustang for over a year that I can't get the time to take it in to get fixed. Service dept is only open on weekends.

Good news, the windows version that you want is 100% free.

Im going to have to look into that!  I would imagine you need an OBDII to USB cord right?

I checked the resistance of the front two ABS sensors today. The front left was 5480 ohms and the front right was 5570 ohms. That's WAY high. I've read that it should be around 1400 or so.

With that being said, when I pulled the sensors out last week they were greased up from being in the hubs. Should they be clean and dry or should they be greased?

I didn't check the rears yet as they both connect up high under the bed and it seems to be a PITA to get to them. Plus they're mounted up there and I have to get them out of the holders and all the check it.

Cord setup is out there but it's probably safe to say that most people today use an ELM327 adapter and bluetooth it over to their lappy. Make sure that whatever adapter you use is fully compliant with CAN bus (ie, the vehicle network protocol your Ranger uses).

Nice! I don't have an android. I'll search for one I can use on my lap top though.

^^^^ I went with this unit, works with either Windows or Android. No disappointments here (connectivity, doesn't work, slow response times, etc) with this one. I didn't use any of their software, including what came with the unit.

That's a nice one. You just use FORScan and any OBDII wifi/Bluetooth connector?

I checked the two rear ABS sensors today. They were at 5440 and 5540 ohms. So all four of them are consistent with each other.

I'm voting bad or frayed wire. Something is amiss between the sensor and the GEM. The resistance you got should be about right for that type of sensor (I'm pretty sure most rangers had an active type magnetic sensor someone correct me if I'm wrong) you might notice it generating a small amount of electricity when you spin the wheel!

Again I wish someone would chime in that is better at forscan than I am I bet it can sniff out the gem codes. Might tell you which wheel then you would only need to chase one pair of wires.

The OBDLink MX is a bluetooth device (ELM 327) that is plugged into the OBDII port on the vehicle. The lappy has windows for the OS, is running FORScan, and is paired with the OBDLink MX, thus establishing wireless communication between the vehicle and the lappy.

Yeah, I just didn't know if any OBDII Bluetooth device would work. I want to make sure I have what I need. Also I see wifi vs Bluetooth, etc.

I'm not sure what to go with.
