I too enjoyed the read, as Jeep, Ford just wanted to see how many they might sell.
Why make a prototype if you don't intend to sell them, someone must have thought it was viable at the time.
My '88 STX 4x, when converted to 5.0L was incredible, it ran so much smoother, was great to drive, mpg was around 21 most of the time, it was what I thought was the truck Ford should have made.
Too bad some of these idea didn't get to production but it is as it is.

interesting that they used a tr3550 for it and a base run of 15.1 at 94 tells us the suspension could use some love to hook up. Hate the explorer front end

I've seen people do this, in the name of modification it is cool but not exactly aesthetically pleasing.

Welcome to FR

"This Ranger's quarter-mile best of 15.1 seconds is quick enough to surprise Z28 drivers, but it's the stout 94.1-mph trap speed that shows the midrange and top-end go-power of this none-too-aero pickup."

I think a near 270-310hp Ranger would be nice but for my likes, not in the upper RPM ranges, and I don't believe the V8 is the complete answer either.  Some form of Turbo based inline4 would be more than sufficient if not a boosted straight 6.  I dare not get into the mentioning of weight penalties because a] the 5.0 doesn't weigh but what? 27-32lbs more than the 4.0L? b] what I would do grossly outweighs that. Hypocrite isn't my color.

An aluminum headed 302 is a little less weight the the 4.0 and 3.0 I believe.  At least that's what I've read

The main reason for a V-8, other than HP, is the sound of the V-8 can not be replicates by a V-6 or 4 cyl., no matter what you do.

And there is always the adage "I should have had a V-8" still applies !

Well, if all things were perfect, and diesel wasn't the price a gallon it is, I'd be enjoying some Cummins chatter. or Id really commit to sin itself and there would be a moderately turbo'd straight-6 which my choices and temperament of such choices ideally would sound far better and reel back a few more MPG than a V8 and all for different reasons.

Never would argue that there is very littler replacement for displacement, clearly if modding and upfit funding was equally spread across a V8, a Straight-6 Turbo, or even a 4BTA Cummins; Lets say a conservative $12-14K on engine and drive train alone.  I'd likely be fighting a slightly uphill battle in talking points.  But would champion in originality simply because a V8 just isn't my choice for whatever subconscious qualms I have.

And as far as sound?  All the 302's sound the same just about.

That's inherent to the H-motor design (Boxster engines) in comparison to an inline 4 cylinder.  Both have their problems.  ALL Subaru motors have a piston to wall clearance of 0.00 and they are inherent to wear.  And you also have to figure, most people buying Honda's for "RACECAR" purposes aren't exactly chasing high end parts, let alone often in the tax bracket to even afford so.  Most Honda guys from back in the day were sponsored by stickers of products they never bought, Ebay, and McDonalds dollar menu. So, the quality of parts usually matched that mentality and the fact they wanted to look/sound fast, but not put the money into the car to be fast or handle better.

1995 era Titanium Exhaust Header back, weighs 7.8lbs with muffler $1580 or EBAY like products not even decent quality Stainless Steel can of angry bees for $49 + shipping.  The fact I used that as an example, probably know what I used and why.  Personally I've only bought one thing ever off ebay since its existed.  Will not spend money on that site.

Late 90's I had an intern with an almost new Civic  that had a custom built Acura 1.9 Turbo installed. Roughly a 230-240 HP motor. It also had the fart can exhaust. He couldn't plant the HP to the street. It sounded bad but it couldn't keep up with my wife's 96 Volvo 854. I had adjusted the blow-off on the turbo, added a less restrictive air intake, and alcohol injection post-turbo. I also has sticky tires. All the Volvo's mods were to increase fuel mileage but upped the HP from 222HP to 260ish HP. City gas mileage went from 19 to 22 And highway  from 26 to 29mpg. Unless you stuck you foot in it.
