Well, my 2002 Ranger 4.0L has over half a million original miles on it and I plan a complete OVH soon. I also have a chance to buy a 1998 Ranger 4WD with same
at a pretty cheap price. The 98 model is a std transmission and pretty much a rusted-out body Etc. I'm looking at the engine as a core to build, have ready for a quick
swap but was wondering about the compatibility, any difference in the block etc.

Unless someone did a swap the 4.0 in your 98 is a OHV version. IMO a MUCH better engine than the 4.0 SOHC though the SOHC version had a couple more horsepower. If you like pulling the motor every 100K miles to replace front and rear timing chains and guides the newer 4.0 is for you!

The Ranger used the OHV through 2000 and every 2001 made be it in 2000 or 2001 had the SOHC.

I'm not sure about the transmission mounting or engine mounts but effectively they are 2 different engines. Being the transmission is electronically controlled you will have to use the newer ECU and I don't think the sensors are the same on the 98. There are enough differences I wouldn't attempt it myself, there are people on here that know MUCH more than I do about the block bolt patterns I hope they chime in.

Thanks Jamman,
I'm figuring that the 4.0L litre that your talking about will not be a fit. Probably close but no cigar. I'll keep looking for a suitable core.

I never did find a suitable engine core so now I'm doing my own.

I was planning to do it next month any way, but timetable advanced a little on me today. My 2002 timing chains finally bit it this morning.
My truck has 518,000. original miles. I bought the master engine kit along with a set of rebuilt heads last year and I have all the parts set aside
for this day. Now it's time to put it all to use.

I could swear I saw a post on here or another forum one time where a guy posted he's got 530K original on his Ranger. That post made me delay
mine for a year to see if I could do that. I would say the mission was 95% accomplished. Have a great T-Day people.

That's crazy, my 98 only has 113k miles on it, and at the rate I put miles on, it would take me 40+ years to meet you.

Good luck on the rebuild. Did you check junk yards just to see? I'm in AZ, and The yard around me have plenty of engines available. But I guess it doesn't matter if your block is still good, but has to be pulled anyways.

Well, it's been a while now since I visited. An update. My engine all pulled, torn down and machined. I couldn't believe it when I saw the block after cooking. After 518K miles there was absolutely no top ridge on the cylinders. With a light on the walls, the original factory crosshatch was still visible (but barely). Cleaned the first oversize @ .020" and both the roller cams heads were flawless. Something to be said for Mobil 1 oil. I just changed out to new rollers and lifters on premium rebuilt heads. The man I tasked with the removal, machine, build and install has a VERY busy shop under one roof and I told him I was in absolutely in no hurry. Truck went down in November and here it is now mid-March. Maybe that was a mistake but I'm still not impatient. I check in on it every Friday after work and today he told me it's his next build. This will be virtually brand new fan to flexplate when done. All new manifolds, int/exh T. Cover, flex plate and starter. Plus, about every sensor I could find. This is all stuff I got willy nilly over the years expecting this day. I have some closet space reclaimed now and looking forward to a nice Summer.

Awesome, thanks for the update!

Going to need to see some pictures when you get it back in.

518k miles on a sohc

Well done

Mobil one is goooood stuff
These engines are tough as nails as long as you care for them properly

Oil changes on time and use full synthetic I only run Mobil one myself

Can't wait to see it all rebuilt!

Sorry I was no in here to answer your engine questions.

98-14 sohc engines all very similar there are a few small changes over the years but basically a sohc 4.0 is compatible with any other sohc 4.0

The ohv 4.0 (90-2000) is same block as the sohc 4.0 so they do share transmissions
The 5r55e automatic is pretty much compatible between the ohv and sohc. The trans received a second speed sensor in 2001 so you cannot use an earlier 5r55e in a 01 or later but you can use a later 5r55e in the earlier trucks. For example I recently built a 2000 ranger w ohv 4.0 using a 5r55e from an 07

The last 99 Explorer Sport we had we ran to 285K miles before we sold it. We had purchased it new & I did all the service on it. It had the 4.0 SOHC in it. When the chains started to rattle about 150K miles on startup before starting it I would step down on the gas pedal to the floor & hold it & crank the engine to get oil pressure then start it normally & the chains would not rattle.
