As far as fluid, the manual calls for MERCON ATF, but you can use any ATF meeting Ford specification XT-2-QDX or -DDX. It does list DEXRON III as an alternative fluid, but DO NOT allow the two to mix.
Per Ford TSB 07-01-07, MERCON has been discontinued and MERCON V is the approved replacement.

Update: IVE SPENT TWO DAYS TRYING TO GET THE TRANSMISSION IN THE TRUCK!! I've got the bolts holes lined up now with bolts ready to thread, but I believe there's a wire loom in the way on the top so I have to move that and try again tomorrow after work.

ahhhhh fun times

You guys really should have some bright lights when working, flashlights only get you so far.

the trick to "stabbing" the 5 speed through the clutch and onto the engine is to get it close to lined up and then move the back of the transmission in small circles..... once it lines up it will slide forward.

All wires and plumbing must be hung well up out of the way

Update: if I can't get it tomorrow then I'm getting it towed to a shop. They said around $400 in labor and a $105 tow bill so in total around $500, give or take. That 400 seems pretty steep but i need my truck running. Hopefully I get it tomorrow.

Normally it would, but it appears Lola has gone on a bit of a stubborn streak and won't work with us. I'll have help tonight for a little while, a coworker I helped move is gonna try and help. The thing I just remembered is, when we had the trans almost in last time it wouldn't go any further forward and the master cylinder was butted up against the forks of the pressure plate. Is it supposed to be like that, or do I have to pull the master cylinder back? The input shaft of the transmission was in but we just simply couldn't go any further because the master cylinder was butted up against the forks of the pressure plate. I looked at a video online and a guy said that the trans will almost go flush with the back of the engine when you have it in, but we couldn't get It to go any further forward

the slave cylinder you mean? Yes the throw out bearing will compress and ride flat on the springs of the pressure plate
The hydraulic bit that physically bolts to the trans is the slave cylinder, with the throw out bearing pressed onto the end that does the actual pressing on the pressure plate "fingers"

The input shaft has to go through the pressure plate, driven disc and into the pilot bearing.
If you are having trouble getting it the last 1" or so and there are no wire looms or hoses being pinched then it is likely just the angle of the transmission, it must match the angle of the back of the engine block perfectly before the input shaft will stab into the pilot bearing allowing the final forward push.
This is why I said when you get the trans close, and the alignment dowels are lined up with their holes, the angle is correct and you need to stab through the clutch move the rear of the transmission around in little circles. This motion will ALWAYS get the input shaft into the pilot bearing.

I do this with the tailhousing part of the 5 speed resting on my knees and I bench press the front of the trans to the engine (we call this "chesting it" anytime you stab a trans or t case with muscles)
Using a trans jack or a floor jack can also be done, having lots of light and a second set of hands is very helpful
My first clutch took 4 days about 20+ years ago
Now it takes me 4-6 hours on a 4x4 ranger based vehicle
You can do this!!

You got this buddy. Trust me, it is well worth it.

There is a way to align the transmission. It only goes in one way. Ziptie or tie up wires and such out of the way.
I don't remember mine being this hard, so there must be a difference between our models.
Trust me. If my 5'2" 140 lbs ass can do this, you can!

I'm sorry about your chipped tooth. To be fair, I had a chipped tooth for 3 years until I got it filed down. In high school when I played marching band (*cue band camp and nerd comments*) I played tuba. Yes. Tuba. And I moved funny during a motion when doing drill and the metal mouthpiece of my tuba smacked me right in the tooth. Chipped it.

:) Good luck bubba.

Okay so now that I had COMPETENT help today for a few minutes after work, my coworker and I were almost able to get the transmission in within 5 minutes, but his wife called and needed him home so he had to leave. I told him this weekend I needed him and he said cool, when we're done I have the stuff he needs to do his wife's oil change so we both profit. But when I say close, it was SO close but the truck isn't jacked up very high so the angle is super weird. I'll probably jack the truck up more to prepare for the weekend. I'm now extremely optimistic. It also helps that it was a great day at work as well.

Should I put the trans crossmember back in to help make it easier to line up, or would that get in the way? My thinking is that we will know where it should sit when installed and how far forward it should be, but the counter to that is the crossmember will be in the way and will put it at a slight angle preventing us from lining it up correctly.

no cross member does not go in until well after the trans is stabbed
YOu find the correct angle visually by looking at the back of the engine block in relation to the front of the transmission

I left my crossmember in when I did mine. Didn't require me to take it out. I was able to have my boyfriend and dad assist, pushing the transmission toward the rear, then tilting the front and pulling it out that way.

It aided us in holding it up when we re-installed it. So my poor dad didn't have to hold the rear upwards.

:)
Glad to see it is going way better!!

Update: got a low lift transmission jack from Harbor Freight today so I'll try again to put it in when I get home. It should work, I'm hoping it'll work

Make sure you schedule it so you can watch them put the trans back in and ask questions so next time you can do it all yourself!!! And figure out what was keeping it from seating

I was thinking about this too, thinking I winder if you got the correct pilot bearing, there were like varaiations of the pilot bearing and years ago I ran into this where the 5 speeds input shaft would not fit inside the new pilot, had to order a different one. That would really suck if a wrong part situation caused you to go through all of this.
ALWAYS check to see if the new pilot fits over the input shaft before you even take things out of the clutch box

@Eddie I'll try but they're only open when I work and not on the weekends.

@410Customs the odd thing is I didn't even put in the new pilot bearing because I couldn't find it, but I felt the old one and it felt fine, the bearings and everything were still good.

I got Lola towed to the local transmission shop, I stopped by after work since they're right down the road and they said around $325, but that's usually for the full job and since it's only half (putting it back together) that it could very well be half of $325, so that would be good. He asked where I got my parts from and I said rockauto.com and he was saying that they aren't too great...? That's quite the opposite from what I heard. Maybe they were giving themselves an out, idk. We'll see tomorrow!

I hope you're right in your assumption of it being half. It's been my experience when you try it yourself and need to get bailed out the guy fixing it charges a little more to figure out what you did, then fix it.

Heres hoping!!! Fingers crossed!!!

It wasn't me assuming, it was the guy giving me a quote. But, the truck isn't even in the bay yet so that's odd. You'd think that they would do it really quick and make quick easy money and then get back to whatever it was, but I also see the “first come first serve” thing and I also know that it's difficult to stop something and then start again. He said maybe tomorrow, at the latest on Thursday.
