I left my crossmember in when I did mine. Didn't require me to take it out. I was able to have my boyfriend and dad assist, pushing the transmission toward the rear, then tilting the front and pulling it out that way.

It aided us in holding it up when we re-installed it. So my poor dad didn't have to hold the rear upwards.
