Prep for pulling cab.

Doors pulled, actually pretty light. Lighter than my 08 doors

Steering column pulled

Don't you love diets when you can see the weight you've lost?

Also answered my own question about the mounts. I'll post a video later

Got the cab off, sketchy as frig

All mounts out, started pulling. My thinking was to get it on the bed, pull the frame and bed out from under it and put it on the ground.

Cab was halfway up when I realized the strap was hanging on with hope and a prayer

Got it on the bed, super sketch man

Readjusting a strap. Safety last!

I didn't get a picture of the actual butt pucker moment, the cab was suspended in the air by a 20 year old 2x6 lol...

Got the bed down, realized halfway through that I wouldn't be tall enough to release the come along dangling from the beam....,I cut the strap going across the cab once it was free from the bed.

Tucked her in for the night, she cooperated well and looked tired. This was post-strap cutting, it's on the ground now.

If I had an engine hoist now would be the time to pull the engine and trans, sadly I do not. Don't worry, I covered the engine with a trash bag then set the head on top, it also has a trash bag on it. Tackling the bed tomorrow, I got some drill bits to drill out the heads of the bed bolts, we'll see how that works.

sketchy or not as long as nobody got underneath there you are fine.... well done! good job!! That strap was just barely hanging on there!!!!

Cab probably weighs about 300-400#, they are not terrible to hoist and move around. A job well done!

Thanks!!

Bed removed, easier than expected. I drilled in the center of the bolts working all the way up to a 1/2 bit, once I pried the bed up the bolt heads popped off. Flipped it over and off. Measured full length of the cab and bed, together they were 183.5” I believe then I measured the length of my single cab short bed truck, roughly 178”

Bad news, the lead on the 2000 ranger was actually a 1997 Ranger, I rented the uhaul trailer and drove 2 hours to find that out..fun fun. While I was there I looked around for more frames, called a local yard and the guy said he had some but wanted 350. I asked if he would take 200 if I pulled the cab and bed myself and he said sure. GREAT! I get there and there's other trucks piled on top of the Rangers, so since he wasn't going to help those were a no go. Just so happens there was a yard next to that one, they had some but he wanted 650 for them, so that was a no go there too.

Now comes the big question, continue searching for a 98+ Frame to swap onto, I'll have to weld/modify the frame for the first gen cab to fit. OR do I just use my existing frame? It's covered in rust but I don't think it's all the way through, I could clean it up and see, but I know this frame fits with the cab and bed and I don't have to modify it but it has the twin I beam up front, not the 98+ ifs that I wanted. Do I compromise for the sake of time and simplicity, or stick it out and do what I want?

is the frame just surface rust or does it have actual rot?

Can you live with the 84 ranger cab? They are much smaller then the 97 and 98+ cabs (elbow room, seat space)
I personally can live with my 88 BII, but that is because the BII has a big space behind the seats.....I know Gen I Ranger cabs feel very small to me

The 97 Ranger is about the best there was IMO, I love 96-97 Rangers
I cant believe that guy would not help you, sheesh if I owned a yard and had people like you come in with GUMPTION I would for sure be supportive

The frame looks like it's just pretty good surface rust, no actual rot from what I can see.

I can live with the small 84 cab, I sat it in before I took the seats out and for me (5'9”) it's not too terribly small. The reason I wanted the 98+ frame is so that I have updated newer suspension design on an older ranger.

I just hate not making any progress

I would rather have the early beam suspension then the 98+ SLA suspension any day of the week!!

Any specific reason why? Is there a noticeable difference in ride quality? I've read that the I beam is notorious for eating through tires on trucks, especially if they're lifted or lowered

wheel travel
The 98+ Ranger SLA suspension has about 5" of wheel travel, I am no fan of torsion bars, they are noisy!!
The beam suspension has more like 8" and with a few mods it can have like 12-14"
Wheel travel keeps the tires on the road, when you have 4" of downtravel available and 6-8" of uptravel.... well the truck can ride like a dream through some bumpy terrain

Change of plans: I can get the old frame blasted and powder coated for the cost of a new frame, so I'm gonna go that route. I'll strip the frame down to basically just what it needs to roll, then send it off after a while.

Christmas is nearly here, I think I smell a 1/2 impact in Santa's toy bag :D

heck yes! even lowered. The beams have been around since 83 in the lowered truck scene, the drag strip and all over the desert..... Ford even still makes the TTB today, you can get a new econoline van and they still have beams up front!
Plus the classic ranger 83-88 and 89-92 is really making a come back, give it a few years and people are gonna wish they snatched up all the OBS trucks

Started stripping the frame, back half mostly done; drive shaft removed, exhaust removed, brake lines, all clips/plastic brackets. Anyone know how to remove body mounts with a broken bolt still in it?

Tools to remove broken bolts. Easy out, left handed twist drill bit, weld a washer and nut to it, air chisel....

I'll just use a propane torch. I don't have a welder or air tank, I've got a Walmart drill that over heats and shuts down after 2 minutes of use, no electricity out to the barn....

Should I disassemble the engine block or leave it whole? Disassembling it would make moving it around much much easier, but I'm worried about the parts being damaged if I don't do something right. The engine I'm going to keep for a project that will happen WAAAYYYY down the line, and it's gonna be rebuilt anyways.

Edit: is there anything I can coat the engine with that will keep it from corroding? I've just been spraying it with WD-40 and Liquid Wrench to keep it from rusting and locking up.

Havent Done a whole lot, got the frame completely stripped and ready for sandblasting/powder coating, now I just gotta save up and get there lol. Today I went and got rid of more junk wood out in the barn and sorted through the good stuff and made my work area bigger, about double. Found some old black paint and slapped a quick coat on it, it looks okay. I could've done better, but I just wanted to get what little was left in the can on there.
