The ected is +/- 700 now (they've been steadily going up since I  started looking).  Then another 700 or so for installation. Setting up gears isn't something I'm up for yet.

So I was on spring break this past week and was able to spend a little time working on truck things. I focused on the bumper project (even though there are plenty of other things to work on haha). The weather wasn't ideal, and I was moving a little slow after having my wisdom teeth pulled, but we made some decent progress.

I think this is where I had left off, with the main body cut and tacked together and the top plate cut out.

First thing I did was get the all the pieces of 2x6 tube welded together.

Next came figuring out how to tie the new bumper to the trucks frame. I ended up kind of copying the factory bumper and hitch mounts, and combining them into a single bracket. The brackets are made out of 1/4" plate and each one bolts to the frame in five places.

"Checking fitment"  ( I was really just excited to see how it looked  haha)

Next I cut out holes for the clevis mounts, rear facing lights, and the bumper mounting brackets. Again, the mounting brackets were cut out of 1/4" plate. The clevis mounts and mounting brackets were also welded to both the inner and outer walls of the 2x6 tube and the mounting brackets are tied into the top plate as well.

And that's pretty much where I left off. Next steps are to finish welding in the mounting brackets, box in the light holes, and add a 2" receiver. Then I can start in on the tire carrier.

Every 4WD ranger deserves one of those bumpers. I bet you could sell them!

 Yes, every Steppie needs one.
Custom 4x4 Fabrication of OK has a Steppie Rear Bumper, reasonably priced and  front winch bumper for any Ranger.
You will need to contact the Owner, Mike and ask about the Ranger Steppie wrap-around bumper specifically.  His front bumper is a standard item.

Jimmyspy,
WOW, that is the only word that comes to mind.
The work you put in that Ranger, it should serve you well.
Just the floor work would have blown my mind.

Nice job, keep the pictures coming.

I'm not sure I have the patience to build many more of them lol

Actually, the reason I'm building it is because I couldn't find an aftermarket bumper that I liked the looks of and had the features I wanted.

Thanks!  I like your setup as well! I'm a fan of C4x4s work, just not the price tag lol   I have considered their front winch bumper though. I go back and forth between an aftermarket front bumper or just reworking my front hitch.

Mike, at C4x4, is a nice guy, although I have only talked to him on the phone.
He accepted the rear bumper project after a few times talking to him and I gave him the drawings and hoped maybe he could make a little money making Steppie Bumpers !

You can't beat making your own and yours looks great.
C4x4's pricing was cheap compared to other manufacturer's, I want to say I got both bumper, customer built and similar in looks for less than the price of a front bumper from other shops.

For people like me, who would have a ought time with that rear bumper build, C4x4 is a dream come true.

Bumper looks great, your work on the Ranger looks great... are you a professional welder ?

lol   I'm flattered, but I'm a complete amateur welder. My old man taught me some basics on an old Sears and Roebuck buzz box when I was little, and I've kinda learned along the way from there.  This Hobart is a really nice machine, and kind of compensates for my lack of skill  haha

Ok on learning to weld... you are good at it !  That comment is based on 30 years of working as a Quality Assurance Engineer and five years as the Supervisor of an Incoming Inspection Department for a Government Shop.

I am not sure if C4x4 has pictures of the rear bumper on my truck, but Mike made it from my drawings and it is nice.
I am not sure what the price tag will be, but I got a great deal and I gave him all rights to the drawings it is something he may made again but his price is still undecided.  Although you don't need C4x4 with your talent !

I need to send more pictures to him just to make sure he got the originals and maybe put me up in his Web Site.

I had a this past week off from school/work, so I was finally able to get back to working on the bumper project. Things are going a little slower than expected, and life got in the way of shop time on more than one occasion, but all-in-all we made some good progress.

I started off boxing in the holes for the LED pods. This turned out to be a complete PITA, as I had to make a lot of butt welds in close quarters. Some of them turned out a little ugly, but they penetrated fairly well.

This one shows the tapped holes for the Pods as well.

The rolled edge of the 2x6 tubing meeting the flat 3/16 plate posed a bit of challenge. Ended up Laying several heavy beads in it and grinding it smooth. Was really time consuming, but I like the way it turned out.

After getting the pod holes boxed in, I tackled the receiver tube and safety chain holes.

Mocking things up and doing some eye-ball measurements.

Lining things up and marking the mounting holes

After getting the mounting holes drilled, I set in on the tire carrier. Drilling the hole for the spindle was less than enjoyable.  Went through quite a few speed bits.

And that pretty much brings things up to date.  This project has taken way longer than I originally thought it would, but there's light at the end of the tunnel. Still need to mount the latch on the tire carrier and weld it all together (its just tacked right now), do some final welding/grinding on the bumper, and then it's time for paint.

So this past weekend, after being “in progress” for damn near 6 months, I finally finished up the bumper project....   almost.   Haha.    Still need to mount a jerry can, wire the lights, and touch up some paint, but I'm calling it done.   It was quite an adventure, and I'm super happy with how it turned out (there are a couple flaws that are gonna bug me, but we're getting over them. Haha)

It was a busy weekend, so I didn't get many pictures.

I also replaced the power steering rack over the weekend (one of the reasons why it was so busy). What a complete PITA that was. Speaking as en engineer, whoever designed that front crossmember shouldn't be allowed to make decisions anymore. Removing the old rack and pinion is damn near impossible, as the mounting bushings need to be removed (yea, it's that tight) in order to free up the space required to rotate the rack. That's all well and fine, but after 16 years in norther Ohio, those bushings didn't want to be removed. After trying every combination of finess, brute force, and cursing that I could think of (and taking a power steering fluid bath in the process), I broke out the angle grinder and cut off the old bushings and inner tie rods. This made removal much easier. Finding replacement bushings for a ranger is damn near impossible, but thankfully bushings for a 2001 Explorer sport work just as well (and are available at autozone).

New power steering rack. I went with an AC Delco reman from rockauto. For some reason, getting the new rack back in the truck was wayyyy easier than getting the old rack out (probably because it wasn't cover in rust, dirt, and power steering fluid)

While removing the old rack, I discovered that the power steering pump was shot as well. The output shaft had almost 1/4” of in/out play. So, we replaced that too, along with the pressure and return lines.

Didn't get any pics, but I also replaced the passenger side wheel hub. It had some play in it, and I already had the truck torn apart.

So that was my weekend.  Haha.   I still need to replace a the rear driveshaft (slip joint is shot) and the transfer case (front output shaft bearings are toast. If you're counting, this will be my third tcase) and I should be done working on this turd for awhile. Lol.

I can make an E shift t case work with a 4x4 conversion no problem if someone so desired. The trick is to use a Ranger/Ford/Motorolla stand alone 4x4 control module and wire it up (7 wires) works with factory dash switch and MOST ford E shift t case motors

Nice build! Thanks for sharing. Drool on the $800 new in box superlift! I wish people would start using the proper coilover for the torsion bar delete there is no need to use the stud to eye style adapter at the top this kills 2-3" of possible coilover length!!!!

FYI the rack and pinion will fit through the cross member, it can be replaced in under 2 hours.... I showed this on my old 96 on the Explorer forum about 10 years ago! LOL

Holy rust mobile, I feel your pain!!
I love this truck, thanks for sharing

I picked up a BW1354 electric shift on craigslist for 40 bucks. But, it turned out that the vibration I was getting was from the CV assembly in the front driveshaft (easier to fix, but way more expensive).

Thanks!    I went with the eye-eye coilovers because I got a screamin deal on them and the brackets from a member on another forum. Also, I've never seen a coilover with a stud mount on the top.

With some convincing!   lol    You definitely need to remove the mounting bushings though, which was a stumbling block for me (nothing an angle grinder can't fix though)

I'm in a constant battle with rust   lol

Update time.

Outside of a few little things here and there, I haven't done a whole lot with the truck over the last couple months (other than drive the wheels off of it).

I did get the new-to-me passenger extended cab door painted and installed on the truck. I also redid the bedliner on the rocker panels at the same time (it was sun faded pretty badly and was starting to peel). If you're standing ~30ft away and squint, the truck almost looks respectable again.

I also replaced the mount for my CB antenna and ran a new coax cable down the other side of the cab (away from the audio stuff), and that seems to have fixed my feedback issues. Don't know if I mentioned it here, but my cb was feeding back through the truck speaks and making a god awful sqeeling sound whenever I tried to transmit.

And, most recently, I took the truck back to Wellsville, OH for a little fall wheeling.

As always, Wellsville was a blast (I'll update my four-wheeling thread at some point). It added a few things to my to-do list though. I managed to shred the sidewall of a tire on a log a couple hours into the trip, so I'm now on the hunt for a new-to-me spare.

The passenger rear axle seal also started leaking at some point during the trip. This one is completely my fault. I was going over the truck before I left, topping off fluids and doing a visual inspection, and noticed that the rear diff housing was a little damp and appeared to be low on fluid. So, I grabbed some 90W and filled it up. It took  a little over half a quart, which I found strange since I just replaced the fluid and cover a couple months ago. Then, as i was driving down the highway the next morning, it hit me. The fill plug on the new diff cover was higher than the one in the axle housing, so the old 'pull the plug and see if fluid runs out' trick wasn't accurate anymore. So, I had over filled the diff. Despite all of my hoping and praying, it looks like the extra fluid raised the pressure inside the housing enough to blow the outer seal.

So, it looks like I need to replaced the rear axle seals. I'll also need to do the brakes, since the one drum is now full of 90W. BUT, since I need to pull the brakes and axle shafts to do the seals, this may be a good opportunity for a rear disc brake conversion
