Hello everyone I am back up & running. Moving my Mustang & my wife's Kawasaki Vulcan went beautifully. The move was OK, the movers were 2 hours late & when they arrived here in Virginia they had to dig up some help as that was not arranged properly by the owner of the moving company. But everything is here, & pics to come as soon as my wife hooks up the camera to the computer.

Now that you are there and moved in, do you have more plans for the place?  Or just going to enjoy some time with no lists needing to be completed?

Next up is to get a 2 car garage put up for my Mustang & my wife's motorcycle, but that will probably be in thew Spring time. Then next year hopefully the price of lumber comes down we need to have a new deck put on the back of the house, & both bathrooms need to be re-done, but that is no rush to get done. I also need to get my woodworking shop set up in the basement next year.

Hey there Mike!  Glad to see you getting things done.  I wasn't getting notifications (Chris fixed that for me), so I am severely behind on your move project.  Have you got a buyer for your NJ home or have you not gotten that far yet?

You might want to check the price of lumber. It has almost returned to normal in my area. Well almost, as truckloads are headed to southern Louisiana right now.

Michael, when we returned to NJ from our vacation to our house in Virginia back in June the housing market was doing so good we decided to put the NJ house up for sale. It sold in 9 days for more then we were asking & more then I thought I would ever get for the house. We wanted to sell the house in NJ before moving to the house in Virginia. My wife & I both got transfers from our jobs & we are both back to work. Tony thanks for the info on the lumber prices.

Wood here is almost back to what it was before.  We will see if Ida affects it.  If I was doing a deck, I would look at some type of non-wood for the surface, just so I didn't have to stain it all the time.  Either a wood look-a-like or even one of the ceramic tile systems.  They look pretty cool.  You can do metal framing also if you desire.

We are looking at Trex or one of the similar composites for the deck top but they still need wood for the structure of the deck.

@OB: I've never seen a deck done with ceramic tiles, but I HAVE seen just a standard concrete pad overlaid with them.  They can look very nice.  Composite is pricey, but probably worth it due to low maintenance.

In person I haven't seen it, a couple on some TV shows.  It was an entire decking system, looked pretty cool.  Mostly if you wanted a look other than the traditional deck look.  Seen a fair more with the composite used.

Yeah, those home shows always have the cool stuff.  Wife and I used to go on the "Parade of Homes" tour that had a map showing newly built homes that you could go see on certain evenings.  I always came away from those with an idea or two to do something to our own home.  Haven't been on one of them for several years now as they were all starting to look the same.

Yeah, we've done those too.  Some interesting stuff.  But then it never helped me with how would I do it.  So all the 'DYI' shows.  Those help me with if I could it myself or not, and how.  Then it's left to if I have the time, or money to pay someone to do it!  I prefer doing stuff myself, don't always have the time.  And to be honest I don't always have the physical abilities.  Getting old sucks!

Yeah, I'm 65 and the full kitchen renovation I did between October and April took its toll on me.  I have been SO lazy since completing that long project!  I come home from work, open a cold one and hit the recliner.  I'm looking out at my lawn right now.  This morning was a nice 73 degrees and dry.  Needed to cut the grass, but I didn't.  Just didn't have the energy.  So I agree, getting old sucks!

I am right there with you guys, I will be 64 in December & after doing a years worth of renovations on this house I am not going to lie it beat me up. Getting old does suck. Today after I was done working on my Ranger we put my Mustang & my wife's motorcycle in the carport & called it quits for the day.

Chris, I'm happy for you that you still have the energy along with the physical strength and stamina to do such things!  That's an honest, heart-felt statement, not a snarky remark.  Let me explain:

When I was 18, I joined the US Navy, and during some rather intense rifle drills, I tore the muscles in my lower back (all of them), which weakened me from that point forward.  A doctor there told me that I would be driving a wheelchair by the time I reached 50 years old, but I'm still vertical and under my own power, so I proved that A-hole wrong.  Yeah, they discharged me and sent me home (with no VA benefits).  I had two auto accidents resulting in severe whiplash that I wasn't treated for, so my neck is a mess as well.  Over the years, I have been hospitalized with pneumonia 5 times, had a collapsed lung at 22 years old and contracted tuberculosis in 1997 (not to mention I smoked cigarettes for 27 years), so the fact that I'm still breathing at all is nothing short of a miracle.  I have constant joint and muscle pain, probably fibromyalgia. Over the past two years, my wife has been battling a duo of gastrointestinal issues and cancer, so the stress of that has taken its toll on me as well, draining my energy to near zero (stress is a b*tch).

I guess what I'm saying is that age really has nothing to do with what a person can or can't do, it's more of what kind of life you've had, circumstances and things that have happened during that time.  My life has been an uphill battle since I was a teenager with physical and health challenges.  I get up every day, grit my teeth and power through another one.  But, to be clear, I know that there are other people out there, even on this forum, that have it much, much worse than I do.

Yep - we all have our story to tell, 5 years ago almost to the day, I had a massive heart attack which left me breathless and even talking was a huge effort for months.

I struggle with motivation, but I set myself a task for each day and make sure I don't overdo things, whereas before I would just keep going, now I spend 2 hours at a time and no more but I get stuff done otherwise I will just stagnate.

Good to hear things are moving forward.

Prices aren't dropping fast enough, I'm waiting on a couple of project myself.

The Deck, what about a cement block or otherwise, foundation with a cement slab... then the ceramic or preferable porcelain tiles.
I have my slabs, front and back in place... waiting for a sale or price drop in price, then porcelain tile that look like boards will go on.

Good Luck on your new house and ALL of the projects it brings and the satisfaction !
