My new project doesn't have fog lights, no biggie. But I was looking under it today and it does have both pigtails for the lights.

What are the odds that I yank the bezel and find a pigtail for a fog light switch? It's an 01 with power everything else, just 2wd.

I'm with ya on guessing if the harness and from what you are saying I would guess in favor of the connections being there.
I don't like Ford's wiring I think the Fogs are negative switched and the switch is special in the way it switches.
I would just run a new wire, Positive switched with an indicator light actuated from the negative side of the light.
I know, too much work if the harness is there but I had to say it !
Luck on that.

I'm yanking the bezel anyway when I put one of my aging pioneers in there. Until then (the radio sucks) I'm putting that amazing little stock looking mach radio I found.

Not meaning to change the subject, but I have like 6 radios now I've removed from the projects I have owned. The 2 that sound the best are the stock mach ford radio and a cheap Dual brand like they sell at walmart. I have like 3 pioneers and a JVC, the dual sounds better no kidding. Maybe it is a high end dual I have no idea. The JVC actually sounds the worst of them all.

The dual sounds a little better than the Mach, but the mach is way louder for an unamplified system. Makes use of those 4 ohm speakers.

Car audio just doesn't sound like it used to, it is 90% aimed toward rap and electronically generated bass lines way below the frequency that a bass was intended to go. Rock is dead but not in my soul.

Ford has put a lot of effort in their OEM Installed Radios, not sure who makes them but I think Philco in years past.
Probably the company has been absorbed by now.

I have always thought Ford OEM Radios sound incredible, all they needed was a good base, and maybe more speakers.
I used the 6-CD in my Ranger EDGE for a long time, then added an adapter to plug in my iPods, then iPhones, never did try an iPad... LoL; but when I put the Digital Input in place... Man-O-Man did that CD-6 Radio come alive.   I also found set of Pioneer Speakers from an Explorer, came with all the fixings, an amp, wiring, etc, and what a system Ford/Pioneer put together, everything plugs in... what's that... Plug and Play !   The 20-Pin Connector behind the CD-6 Ford Radio works for a lot of things... Aux. CD player, Amp Input, Digital Interface for Apple Devices... etc, etc !

I now run a Alpine, LX-207, no mechanical inside, I still need to do some adjusting but it sounds kind of tinny, not that quality sound from the OEM FORD Unit.

If I didn't want the Apple Play and the Apps usage, like Waze, I would have stayed with a Ford Head Unit.

Would be nice to find a new CD-6 with all the Apps Stuff.

Ltr

p.s.  I do have a high end (back in the 1990s) Pioneer Head Unit, new in the box, never installed.  I got a great deal on it, have always thought highly of Pioneer, but if it only had the Apps thing.   I need to pull it out and determine what I good price would be, need to start dumping things.

p.p.s.  What about the Fog Light, are you thinking OEM Switching ?
This EDGE, came with OEM Fog, I did the Fog Light Mod to keep the Fogs on with both his and lows and it makes a big difference on both beam levels.   I took the Fog off to mount a new front bumper and never added them back.
Recently I got a set of LED, not projectors, not installed but when I hooked them to a battery the light output was poor at best.   I am looking for LED Projector Fogs now, will see how that turns out.

I bought some LED's for my stock fogs on one of my 2000's and was impressed at the light but not at the fitment. I had to buy bigger o rings and washers for the stock screws. The rotation device rattled loose on one already but boy is it bright! I only use it on back roads as not to blind anyone.

I bought projectors for the headlights on the new one, paid the price for a reputable unit. The lenses were a little foggy anyway. I'll have some change to put in to this one, I'm selling everything but the jalapeno. For once I'll only have 2 trucks.

I have found LED Bulbs installed in OEM Housings don't always work well... yes they put out decent lights but the projection of the light isn't the best.   I'm guessing the Reflector isn't made for the LEDs but that is why I will be buying new LED Fogs, projectors maybe but some sort of full-on aftermarket LED Fogs Lights.
The Flat LED Fog Lights I have are bright, they include a single strip of amber LEDs which can be used as directionals, I like that, but they only have the power of the large amount of LEDs to give the light, again no projection.  Rangers need a fill light between the front of the truck to the beginning of the headlight position.
I'm going to try these flat LED Fogs first and see what they do on the truck.

The best OEM Fog Lights I have ever had on a vehicle, were on a 2000 Ford Ranger style, BRIGHT yes they were, and the y filled the area in front of the truck without a problem, but not swappable with my '03.
The '03 EDGE's Fog lights were good and did what they were suppose to do but the new bumper put an end to that, and I'm looking for Fog Lights that work as good as the '00 did.

Yes indeed there is a foglight pigtail plugged into a plastic well in the back of the bezel. I'm going to put a switch on it and see if it sends 12V to the plugs under the bumper. If not I bet it is just a relay missing out of the relay box I have a couple of them laying around.
I also have a electrical diagram on the way for the 01 and a workshop repair manual. Now I can buy more 01's LOL I won't be limited to 2000's due to a lack of wiring diagrams. lol

Aren't the '01 - '03 are the same, maybe to '11 ?

Make sure you use Ford Parts on this one, I don't remember all the details but the switch is wired differently than a standard Switch and relay.

Its a plan so what is going on after the wiring test... new OEM Fog Lights ?

Jim I had a 96 Ranger 4x4 that I got new that did not have fog lights, when I pulled the radio bezel the connector for the fog light switch was clipped to the back of the bezel. It was very easy to add them since the pigtails were taped to the harness behind the front valance. I also put LED bulbs in my fog lights on my 2000 & they were a direct fit. I got them from Amazon. It takes bulb #-9006.

We do quite a bit in lighting, LED conversions as well as the cliche states, mild to wild of lighting setups.   As for the LED headlights, it depends on how far back you go in vehicles and the type of LED's used too.  Some of the issues are the new bulb itself in combination with an outdated housing.

We do recommend if you're of the type of people that like to drive with all your lights on all the time, or that person who will drive with your fog/driving lights on hours before its dark, consider looking for a set of SAE Fog or driving lights.  Many people have really no idea that there are lighting patterns let alone that there is approximately about 7-8 patterns and functions of lights.

Not all lighting is created or designed equally.  [Without getting into a full on debate, most people equate a vehicle that can easily spin the tires as a fast or faster vehicle. This isn't always the case as a hard launch with that vehicle spinning the tires is losing/wasting time because of the lack of traction if we're counting on competitive terms.  Sure it has a lot of "power", but if its a 110hp or 750hp, if you cant get it to the ground and make use of it, it means nothing.]*

Baja Designs offers two really well thought out charts; Zones and light patterns their lenses and outputs they've created.

The SAE lights are designed with specifically lenses designed as a specific zone low and in front of a vehicle and of a slightly lesser wattage/Lumens.  We've over the years have had to change some minds in showing proper lenses meant for specific expectations go farther than expecting your fog/driving lights to make up for the dingy headlights.  We really should do a article on our blog about this, it would touch more people than a mild post here and there.

For those who may not know, SAE lighting is generally between 26-35watts vs the typical thoughts of swapping in the brightest 55watt replacement bulb one could find off the shelf at the local parts store.  Further, in the days where you had separate sealed beams like Sealed Beam Headlight Image the low beam headlight was 55w, the separate high-beam was 75w; so a 55w driving light upgrade is insanely bright and often cause other issues like heat and wire damage due to the extra amperage draw on the circuit that the wiring wasn't intended for.

If you find a set of lights as you described with "no projection" those could be just a marker light or they could be interpreted as DRL's for just visibility or to be seen via attention more than projection.

A set of wide cornering lights, or a "true" driving/fog light will fill the gap between the bumper and the shadow lighting that starts the low beam head light pattern.  Keep in mind bulbs and lenses can individually and in combination alter a thrown light pattern.  Often we see this with the older 9004+ bulb housings where the light has poor projection, but when followed back to the housing, the refracted light looks like the Chernobyl reactor crack.

We deal in middle of the road to middle upper end gear and some items above.  In terms of lighting, we have lights for fast vehicles, and for slow vehicles.  If you're just trail running at night at slower speeds, you will not need a light with a pencil beam that you will never catch because its 2 miles away, that's a waste of money because the expectation doesn't meet the demand. Same as a set of brighter fog/driving lights isn't really going to assist you running deeper brush or desert floors at high speeds.  You won't see anything fast enough to take action to miss obstacles or changes in the trail no matter how well you know it as at night the landscape will look very different.

We try to first match expectations and or use first, and secondly within a budget that makes sense.  Doing it the opposite way has proved countless times the old adage of you get what you pay for, and a happy customer is not one of them.

Taking the time to slow a customer down, listen to their expectations, KNOW your product lines, and be able to show features and benefits that are a value to your customers needs.  Often the hardest part is slowing the customer down enough to make a good decision based upon good information.  Sometimes the customers expectations and their budgets are pretty far apart.  Providing them with good information to consider is key to a successful sale vs a customer just tucking a box under their arm and not knowing any better or feeling like they wasted money/want a return.

Sometimes we look like hero's when we provide a solution that meets or beats a customers expectations and far less than they expected to pay for it.  I personally like that better than a great sale that seems to go way to easy.. There's always a hiccup in those transactions it seems. lol

We offer a lot of options, FOR every option:

  • Baja Designs
  • GG Lighting
  • Zroadz
  • Front Runner Outfitters
  • AlphaRex Headlights
  • KC Hi-Lites

Special Order

  • Rigid Industries
  • Morimoto
There is some odds and ends stuff we have access too for Marine, RV, and some other truck lighting, and some stuff isn't on the site as of yet. But if you don't see it, inquire with a part number and we can handle it manually.

Jim,
How did the Fog Lighting turn out ?
I'll be working on mine shortly !
I'm not using standard LED Fogs but even if the Fog I have don't work out the wiring will be there for a new set... LATER ON !

Ok so that's one weekend of fun, whats after that ?

I didn't see the Fog Lights in there !

Why are you using a Torsen Posi Unit ?    Does it work better in slippery condition of winter ?

I have the entire 31 spline torsen rear out of a Ranger. The current 7.5 is whining like crazy. If a 3.slow has torn up a 7.5 I'm sure the 8.8 will be better. And if I ever get around to putting the 5.0 in it I won't have to worry.

I haven't found fog lights I like yet. I want it to be very small. Almost like you wouldn't know it is a light until it is on and blinds you.

Is the gear ratio the same on both rears?

I have the 373 limited slip. Since I do more city driving a 410 LS would probably be better for me.

With the 3.0-SLOW... 4.56s worked for me...  give it a feeling of a little more seat of the pants power.

Oh ya... 33" tires too, still on the Freeway in SoCal I still need forth to get up some of the hills and that's on my way down to San Diego !

Are you thinking Projectors for the Fog Lights ?

Make sure to post which ones you use and pictures of the output.

I'm still in a Fog Light chose mode and would appreciate your input.

Lol - the last thing you want in a FOG light is brightness - you want penetration and that comes from a low power yellow light with a flat broad beam that will pick out the kerbs and middle of the road markings.

I think the 1998-2000 Ranger's OEM Fog Lights do a great job.

What about rebulbing with newer LEDs !

Kinda depends on where you live over here. We had fog almost daily in the hills of KY. Sun comes up, wait 30 minutes, it is gone.

London Fog is so legendary someone in the US started a company and named it that. I believe I have a jacket somewhere in the closet.

Since it is a 2WD valence there are just flat plastic portions where the fogs are on a 4wd. Was just looking for something small diameter that was much brighter than they look.

I have LED's in my 2000, so bright they have cooling fans. I use them on back roads.

Something else small diameter I could put in there would be a silencer with a stainless flip cover solenoid operated, red trace lasers and like 1000 round mags of 22's for chasing taliban in a coupe years.

Are the parts available from LMC or similar stores to just add the OEM type housings and mounting ?

OEM Fog lights add the fill in front of the truck that the headlights overshoot.
I did the FOG Light Mod to let the Fogs shine all the time and it improves the front area lighting a lot.

Jim, What is behind the 2WD Front Apron for the Fog Lights Mounting ?

Don't mess about - mount a couple of rocket launchers on the fenders and 20mm cannon under the bumper
