Has anyone added or  upgraded their 7.5" to limited slip? I don't want to do a full axle swap. My differential is in need of a full rebuild. I'm going to have a limited slip carrier added but I see 3 types and wondering which is best for the 7.5"? I see the Powertrax, the Standard Gear clutch type and spring type. Mine is an automatic with 4.10 gears. I will be having the ring and pinion replaced with same ratio. Main thing I'm wanting to know is will the ABS tone ring install to any or all these different carriers? I see reviews of them on Summit about Ranger owner's installing but not saying anything about the ABS ring. Only one review where the owner of an Aerostar mentioned he had to heat it up to remove but no one ever saying if it causes problems with the ABS system later on. The shop I'm having doing it specializes in differentials and does a lot of 4x4 work so I know they know how to set it up. Don't think they've had this particular job requested though.

Honestly upgrade to an 8.8 l/s axle. Direct replacement for the 7.5

I have Ford's limited slip. It works too well. I am always chirping a tire going around a corner or it braking free when the roads are wet because I had only traction with one tire.  An 8.8  or 7.5 LS swap would probably be the least expensive route.

That said if I didn't have a LS I would put a Eaton Detroit Truetrac in the rear end.  I will not have a truck without  a LS 3rd member.  I had a 78 F-100 Ranger 4x4 that had open diff's front and rear. It would get stuck going down a dirt road. I put the Detroit locker in the rear and a spool up front and it became unstoppable. With both wheels turning a truck will handle differently than an open diff truck.

IMHO... I lke the gear LS, that can be locked up with a little brake pressure, and an OEM type LS is probably the least expensive.
BUT I'm with black06, thinking on the cost of a rebuild, adding a LS, a rebuild kit, you can probably find an 8.8 from an Explorer with ... 4.10 gears, LS, 31 spline axles, and disc if available for the year you are looking at.
Some have lower miles on them, some more, but once you get one, get it installed, it will be worth it !
In the long run if you select carefully, overall cost might end up close to the same for your option vs the 8.8".

Before you do all of the work to your existing axle, check out the 8.8 option, you might be surprised.

Ltr

p.s. if the 8.8 replacement ends up being lees than your route, you can set it up, clean it up, while it is out of the vehicle, a lot easier than doing it in the vehicle.

If your 7.5 needs an overhaul and you are regearing, dont waste your money on the 7.5.

It's time to upgrade to the 8.8 and you might find one already geared 4:10.

ABSOLUTELY agree 110% these guys are spot on!!!
7.5 is a GOOD axle
But not worth spending any money on.
Go 31 spline 8.8 and disc brakes, never look back.
The cost for parts and labor is the same
You can find explorer rear axles (95-01 Explorer all had disc brake 31 spline 8.8) for $150-450 depending on miles and gears. MANY stock explorers came with 4.10 and a limited slip so.... you can actually save a bunch of money and just get explorer axle, convert it to spring over and bolt it in.........
I ditched the 7.5 from my BII about 18 years ago now? The 8.8 with discs was one of the best upgrades the BII ever received

Can I add you can only find the 4.10 LS in expos/mountaineers with a V6.

I have 2 rear ends just sitting there dang it has been a while. I have a 8.8 4.10 LS 28 spline native ranger drum brakes and a 4.10 LS 31 spline from an expo with disks. Summer please come quick, maybe I'll finish it up with the stimulus check LOL
