IMHO... I lke theĀ gear LS, thatĀ can be locked up with a little brake pressure, and an OEM type LS is probably the least expensive. BUT I'm with black06, thinking on the cost of a rebuild, adding a LS, a rebuild kit, you can probably find an 8.8 from an Explorer with ... 4.10 gears, LS, 31 spline axles, and disc if available for the year you are looking at. Some have lower miles on them, some more, but once you get one, get it installed, it will be worth it ! In the long run if you select carefully, overall cost might end up close to the same for your option vs the 8.8". Before you do all of the work to your existing axle, check out the 8.8 option, you might be surprised. Ltr p.s. if the 8.8 replacement ends up being lees than your route, you can set it up, clean it up, while it is out of the vehicle, a lot easier than doing it in the vehicle.
