While remodeling my house and various other projects I've saved all my copper, brass, aluminum, and some steel. This is an experiment to see if it is worth it to save and recycle. I'm confused by these new tariffs. I cant tell if I should cash in or hold off. I been to the scrap recycler about 5 times for my employer. One is a big place and the other a hole in the wall. The big place flat out ripped me off so I never went there again. The hole in the wall place is kinda sketchy. Some times they are full and wont accept anything. Last time I brought an old fireplace insert and they were charging for anything ferrous.

I'm looking for the big payday. Lol. I'm in no rush to get it gone. I keep adding to it. What I'd like to know is whens the best time to visit the scrapper. Is there a time of the year, best quarter, month, week or day of the week to visit the scrapper?

You just have to keep an eye on scrap prices. There are various pricing sites online, but a quick call to your local recycling center is usually the best way, because they alter the market pricing to fit their business model. Operating costs, profit losses, etc..

We haul multiple tons of aluminum/steel/cast-iron every year here on the farm. We collect from anyone/everyone in 3 counties. It's rare that we go collect anything though. We usually stipulate that if someone wants rid of something, they have to deliver it to us. Of course, I do fall into deals where I have to go get large accumulations of scrap from time to time.. But that reduces your profit margin quite quickly due to costs of fuel and truck/trailer operating/maintenance costs.

The last payment for our aluminum can haul was $700+ but it was a 7 year accumulation. Two truckloads of 55 gallon drums pressed full of extremely flattened aluminum cans. Separate out any aluminum sheet (6061/7075 etc) as it's worth quite a bit more.

Separate out electric motors by removing them from whatever they're bolted in to. Copper wound motors are worth a ton more than the modern aluminum wound motors. Keep steel and cast iron separate also. Try to keep cast copper/brass separate from extruded or drawn brass/copper.. For example, a washing machine (by weight) isn't worth the trip to the scrapper, but the motor inside if it's copper wound, is worth quite a bit more per pound.

One more thing.. Don't let these scrap yards beat you down on price too much. It's a fine line to walk between pissing them off and them kicking you out, and getting the price they should be giving you. They like to take advantage of people pretty often. It just takes a few years of experience to know when you're getting taken, and when you're getting the best price you're gonna get anywhere.

I have like 40 lbs of carbide I've been saving for 15 years. Waiting on prices to jump back up.

By my understanding, the tariffs only apply to materials being imported to the US from other countries. In theory, that should make the materials on our soil more valuable.

I scrap out aluminum cans and brass casings, as well as any metal parts I happen to come across while doing repairs. My place doesn't buy steel (at least currently) so that's purely to keep it out of the landfill. I made 13.50 off a trashcan full of crushed cans a week ago @ $0.45/lbs. Brass usually runs +/- $0.05 of $1.00/lbs.

When the opportunity arises I'll also drop off copper and other metals. That usually happens when an appliance goes out and I strip it for parts. Plastic goes in the trash, valuable metals sit in a pile for later and the useful stuff gets set aside (mains cables, PCBs, sockets/connectors, etc) Pots and pans, too.

I don't get a great deal of money from it, but the money I do make I'm happy for because that's money I would have otherwise, literally, thrown away. Good for the wallet, good for the earth. That and it saves a TON of room in the trash can.

I keep small amounts of things anymore.. not much. Before I left SoCal, i had a buddy of mine whose Dad has been doing Xerox repairs for decades... He had a 25x100ft shop packed with big-ass Xerox printing machines with barely a trail to the back door. Some nearly as big as the truck and half as wide

I spent two weeks, made a dent twice as long as the ranger. I made $600 to make him some room. I scrapped everything I could and made close to tripling that. I made just over $1500 those two weeks and really made for a picking up a couple last minute items, my new clutch kit at the time, and some pocket money for the Mojave trip out..

I had a   ton of aluminum, brass, and other steel components that paid well. I must have made like 20 trips though. Thank God it was only 1/4 mile away drive.

I scrap monthly
We crush many many trucks here
I save dirty copper (wire looms), Aluminum (heads, starters, alternators, radiators, etc), batteries, cat converters, steel, and more
We pile up all the valuable stuff and wait for the market prices to go up when we can.
I will call around and find who is paying the most and take make the extra drive when it pays to do so. Usually the metal yards follow the market but it does pay to shop around.
I sell my cat's to a private buyer, he pays way more then the yards. He crushes the cats, labels their guts and takes it to the refinery. I could cut him out and do that ourselves, but that requires more time.

I have found it is not worth it to strip copper or try to clean all the aluminum (Like remove the valves from an aluminum head, or plastic side tanks from a radiator) the amount of time invested vs payday does not make it worth while.

Scrap prices SUCK right now....like 5 years ago I would get $200-300 for a complete 4 door explorer crush (stripped) now we see $80....just FYI

Good question about the tariffs, not sure if it will help or hurt but I can tell you its needed! USA has been getting the short end of the stick for toooooo long!!!

Good theory but no. You are correct, tariffs are applied only to imports. Those are put in place to keep say ford from finding a better deal importing steel instead of buying American steel. As seen in the news this can spike a trade war. Other countries just add tariffs to our exports attempting to compensate. This results in some of the countries to buy elsewhere. Tariffs dont increase the value of materials they try to equalize prices. Our steel still isnt moving like it should yet and that's why no one is buying it yet. If a big industrial project in a big country gets underway prices can go up. Currently China has scaled back its projects. China was mostly responsible for the rise in prices a few years.

Question for the regular scrappers?

Do you see better prices at the beginning or end of the year, month, or week? Is there a particular time scrapyards are trying to meet quotas or fill orders and pay slightly more?

I live in southern Indiana near the Kentucky border and I scrap year-round whenever it happens to be full.

I find my prices are very consistent. Doesn't seem to change with the season or otherwise. The price for aluminum has only changed once for me. It went from $0.32/lbs to $0.45/lbs and has stayed there. Brass went down by two cents once but I don't know where it is now.

Only thing we seem to sell is Dollars and War, and by dollars I mean we offshore are debt.

For a couple decades now, Asian countries buy up all of our good metal, and then sell us their  .

My step-father was metallurgical tech for a LONG time.. He retired early because the industry here NO longer supports nor requires quality control methods like what used to be done as its just being purchased as is and refined elsewhere in the world. I'm half ass paraphrasing that last part but you get the drift. There is NO steel industry left in Detroit, Nor really even Pennsylvania or Ohio really either. Lots of stamping plants and assembly plants but not much in the way of "Steel plants and industry".

And Boy oh boy.. Dodge sure makes a lot of its popular cars outside of the confines of the US of A... I dont care if Canada is considered our backyard of N. America.. If thats the case invade it and take it.Otherwise, its not helping the US currency and economy like it should.

Funny you mention that. I was just thinking about how most domestic brands we associate as made in the USA are made in Canada and Mexico and brands like Toyota, Hyundai, Nissan and Honda have plants in the US

Excellent!!! That was helpful. If it only varies a little I'm good to recycle anytime. Just trying to maximize my rewards and needed more info. Thank you.
