I scrap monthly
We crush many many trucks here
I save dirty copper (wire looms), Aluminum (heads, starters, alternators, radiators, etc), batteries, cat converters, steel, and more
We pile up all the valuable stuff and wait for the market prices to go up when we can.
I will call around and find who is paying the most and take make the extra drive when it pays to do so. Usually the metal yards follow the market but it does pay to shop around.
I sell my cat's to a private buyer, he pays way more then the yards. He crushes the cats, labels their guts and takes it to the refinery. I could cut him out and do that ourselves, but that requires more time.
I have found it is not worth it to strip copper or try to clean all the aluminum (Like remove the valves from an aluminum head, or plastic side tanks from a radiator) the amount of time invested vs payday does not make it worth while.
Scrap prices SUCK right now....like 5 years ago I would get $200-300 for a complete 4 door explorer crush (stripped) now we see $80....just FYI
Good question about the tariffs, not sure if it will help or hurt but I can tell you its needed! USA has been getting the short end of the stick for toooooo long!!!
