I scrap out aluminum cans and brass casings, as well as any metal parts I happen to come across while doing repairs. My place doesn't buy steel (at least currently) so that's purely to keep it out of the landfill. I made 13.50 off a trashcan full of crushed cans a week ago @ $0.45/lbs. Brass usually runs +/- $0.05 of $1.00/lbs.
When the opportunity arises I'll also drop off copper and other metals. That usually happens when an appliance goes out and I strip it for parts. Plastic goes in the trash, valuable metals sit in a pile for later and the useful stuff gets set aside (mains cables, PCBs, sockets/connectors, etc) Pots and pans, too.
I don't get a great deal of money from it, but the money I do make I'm happy for because that's money I would have otherwise, literally, thrown away. Good for the wallet, good for the earth. That and it saves a TON of room in the trash can.
