Okay, so today I changed my oil and filter. Checked and topped off all the fluids as well as checked all the lights and tire pressures.  I have decided to leave my summer wheels in their tarp cocoon and just run my stock wheels with the Hankook Kinergy tires.  Thinking I may try to sell my AR172 wheels and Cooper Cobras.

I know I shouldn't post this, but I'm losing interest in my truck.  Heck, I haven't washed the thing since early October, although I did run it through a brush car wash a couple of months ago to get the yellow-green pollen off of it.  I don't know, maybe it's because I am getting old...

You didn't get the memo? LOL

I've always tried to baby the paint and trim as well as the interior, but I just can't seem to get excited enough to give it a good wash and wax like I would normally have already done by now (spring and fall waxing).

The clear-coat was shot 10 years ago. If I do wash the truck it is not noticeable by the next day. If I had decent paint it would be different.

How does it perform?  Do you feel it in your neck when you get into it?

I've just been taken it easy on it. Just wanting to make sure everything is work like it should. But I can tell with 4.10's it'll blow the right rear tire off no problem

Well. The brakes are done on the 8.8 Explorer axle. :D
I will say, I have never been so excited to be able to STOP!
I can lock up all 4 tires now. No issue.

Went offroading for the first time on Saturday with the new 5.13 gears.
HOLY COW. I can climb some of the super steep hills, barely any throttle, and make it through sugar sand like an absolute boss.

Also, it is confirmed. Both tires do spin. Had to dump the clutch through super soft and lose sand, and I threw 25 foot rooster tails behind me. From both spinning tires. Covered my buddy's Dakota.

Went to mount up the James Duff traction bars... They don't work with the new u-bolts for the 8.8 31 spline. So I am going to get a set of mounts made from my buddies CNC shop. I will update when I get them mounted. :-)

It'll be in the works probably this coming winter. Now to make the brakes truly stop the truck again. Thinking about either trying a expo or mustang master cylinder. The one on the truck now doesn't seem to have enough bore size. I do have mustang  discs on the back too

What master cylinder you using? I'm have poor stopping performance with my set up

It is the standard Ranger one. Everything is compatible on that part. Brake lines you have to make your own but it works.

Maybe I just need a new one, I can stand on the brake, it's stops like I'm Only 75% pressing them.

The brake thing sounds good,I have to do the same thing !

When spinning your tire... if on soft stuff, both tire may spin, if on a harder material one may only spin.Did you do Locker of some type ?

Also, it is your truck so tell me to STFU... when spinning your tires in sand, the sand gets in to places it should nt be, I think you know... more wear on parts.

The Duff Traction Bars, you do have an Exploder 8.8 right ?   I have always thought the Exploder 8.8 had the narrow ends ... ?
Are the Traction Bars made for a 31 spline axle ?

I had to make plates for mine because of the larger tube,31 splines, but I purchased my traction bars originally for a 28 spline 8.8.

Good Luck on the mods, looking good !

The axle I have is Limited Slip. Some Explorers came with them. I was lucky to have one under my donor truck. I spun the pinion when I had it out. Explorer 8.8 is a 31 spline. I had ordered the bars for just a 98-11 Ranger. But the flip kit I used isn't factory hardware, it was made by RuffStuff so it is a lot beefier than the OEM ones. Hence why the brackets did not work.

I have lived in sand all my life. So I know the affects. Florida is known for sugar sand.

Is there a proportioning valve in line, Brake Shoes take less pressure than Disc, the rear may just need more fluid and pressure.

Wheel Spacers may/could reduce your turning radius !

The spacers put the tire on the outer most part of the knuckle and spindle, which cause the tire to have an increased arc when turning, i.e. hitting body/bumper.

Everything else is factory in the braking system. Can I delete the proportioning valve and add a manual valve? I got a spare sn95 master cylinder siting around. I'm curious if it would fit the booster.

From what I understand, and please someone with more knowledge than I, speak up, you can put on in.
The question is what do you have.

In all the disc brake swaps I've read about I haven't noticed a problem with the proportioning valve, so it will be interesting to hear from someone that knows for sure !

Yes you can add a manual valve but you don't need to.

A simple proportioning valve only slows flow it can't control final pressure. The pressure for the front comes from one part of the master cylinder the pressure for the back comes from another.

I've lost track of who is having the problem LOL but the rears should work just fine with the amount of fluid provided by whichever half of the master cylinder is supplying it.

That being said, poor rear brake performance can only be a few things. In order from most likely to least likely:

1. The line is open for long enough during a rear end swap for all the fluid to drain. Most people simply do not bleed enough. Air has to compress completely for the hydraulic fluid to start compressing at all, and that it will but the piston in the master cylinder has to move much farther to do that. The piston for the front and the back in the master cylinder are on the same rod. If it has to move a half inch to compress the big bubble in the line chances are the front is already making resistance and could stop completely before the back does anything. Have a shop air bleed or vacuum bleed them, you have to start there.

2. IF you bleed properly and still no love.... some disk brake expo rear ends have been sitting for a while. The caliper(s) could be rusted to the bolts that let them move back and forth, the calipers themselves might have pistons stuck from rust and or dry rot.

3. The ABS module is freaked out and stuck in the emergency position. The proportioning valve is in the ABS or RABS module, there are 2 different types depending on if your Ranger was born with rear anti lock or 4 wheel anti lock. Either style is made so that if you lose pressure to the back (that pesky line before the rubber line on the rear end will break on you at some point) the pedal goes almost to the floor then the proportioning valve locks and you still have a little bit of brake to the front to get you home or on a trailer somewhat safely. Anyone who has broken a rear line knows exactly what I mean. This will also turn the brake light on, the one on the dash until the valve comes more center. I have seen them get stuck though it wasn't on a Ranger. Easier to replace them. Symptom would be pedal goes much farther than you like and the light will come on AND there will be very little fluid going to the affected side. Just enough to fool you in to thinking they are bleeding if you haven't done it a million times.

4. Most rare and I have never seen it on a Ranger, those rubber lines have linings. The linings can come dislodged especially if they sit dry for a while then all of the sudden see fluid. The inner lining comes loose and acts like a one way valve, stopping the fluid from flowing in the quantity needed for stopping.

5. Less likely than #4 but since we have a conspiracy theory thread going I have to bring this up. The friend helping you with the brakes? Actually your enemy. Maybe wants you dead because they have eyes for your girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, husband, dog whatever. Maybe they didn't like your Trump bumper sticker or your Obama sticker and it is politically motivated. OR they might be from a planet where the inhabitants live by consuming brake fluid and they are angry at the amount you are asking them to pour on the ground when they "pump it up and hold it... OK you can let it go now".

In recap, the proportioning valve on your Ranger really isn't a proportioning valve, it just gets labeled as that. It is kind of an emergency gate so that if one half loses pressure you can still stop only not as effectively.

I have used real proportioning valves on oiling systems in machines, some adjustable some with different diameter orifices. The ways on a lathe need a lot more oil than the ball screw but since it is coming from one source at a constant flow rate and has to go to different areas at different rates "proportioning" is what it needs. Geeky.

My 2:50AM red bull driven synopsis.

Wheel spacers are out for delivery so hopefully tonight I'll be able to turn again.. never realized just how much I turned to full lock when parking...
Wheel Spacers may/could reduce your turning radius !

The spacers put the tire on the outer most part of the knuckle and spindle, which cause the tire to have an increased arc when turning, i.e. hitting body/bumper.

Yeah I haven't had the chance to take the truck down the road but my issue was the 285/75R16s would rub the sidebiters on the frame and the front swaybar on both sides at full lock.  The 1.5" spacers have stopped that and so far the only place that is rubbing is the driver side fender liner but like I said I still need to drive it around the block and see how it feels too.

Well I've since bleeded them twice, still same result, actually since I did the swap two years ago the pedal never felt right. And I had the brakes changed out so fast I didn't even have to top the master cylinder up much. Idk what's going on with the truck. I am tempted to go to the junk yard, grab a 2002 explorer master and abs pump and try it on my truck to see if it gets any better.
