Nice image too !

I took a screen shot, I did try to drag it over and it accepted it, looking good, but when I "POSTED" it went south.

I sent an e-mail to Jamie, what a PITA the shas been, Apple has become so limited in what it allows you to do, I think I'm moving back to other PC.

Apple has made it so you need additional programs to do what you cold do before upgrades, NAD the other programs cost you !
So what was free within a programs, like Photos, you have to buy another Photo program from them, to get it done.

Trim a little here and a little there and a little at a time, no one will notice RIGHT... WRONG !

Sorry got carried away.

Could the other Ranger Site, code it in a way that will not allow a transfer to another Site ?

Just thinking on it, it was a .PDF, not a .jpg or other picture format.

To get the screen shot to Photos and make it a .jpg, I had to take the screen shot, pull it up with "finder" then do a transfer to Photos... as I said PITA ! I guess the right word to use is "APPLE" ! the y are getting too big for their own good.

figured it out finally,,,,well actually @Jamman did back on page one
truck is flex fuel
turns out this ranger is a 99
The guy I bought it from said it was a 98, I checked the door sticker it says 09/98 I assumed it was a 98.
After 2-3 trips to the junk yard in attempt to find the correct fuel tank sender (w the little black box) I still came up short
So I tried an old trick, look up the previous year model and next year model parts and compare info and pictures.
Punch in 99 ranger fuel tank sender on Rock auto and low and behold a flex fuel option in 99 for 2.5 and 3.0 trucks..... and the pics show the little black box
Sheesh
It has something to do with the fuel level sender for flex fuel vehicles
I dug out the title....sure enough 99 model year
I ordered one now I am hoping to fix the fuel gauge, the last issue on our 98 4.0 conversion truck

Well, you are welcome BUT I didn't know of the black box on the fuel pump pigtail BUT I do know they have another valve along the driver side of the frame that ties in with the FFV system. My Jalapeno is a FFV next time I'm under it I'll snap a pic of the unusual valve.

this ranger should have it too

In order to run E85 you have to dump 30% more fuel into the combustion chamber.....so the truck has sensors that can detect the amount of ethenol in the fuel....

this little black box is only wired into the fuel level gauge

so the other sensor you speak of must be for the engines computer/ fuel management

We learn something every day!
I spent many years doing Explorers, still kinda like a kid when it comes to Rangers....very exciting!
Explorers never had the flex fuel 3.0 thank goodness and flex fuel was not an option until 2002 I believe

I'm going to venture a guess here. The specific gravity of E85 is different from regular unleaded. The float would be at a different spot physically per the volume of fuel in the tank. I bet it is simply a resistor that when the other valve (mystery valve I mentioned) detects E85 it either throws it in series with the sensor or connects the sensor directly to the gauge depending on if the sensors resistance is higher at the top or lower at the top (full).
The higher the specific gravity (water is 1.0) the higher the float will sit in the fuel. Regular unleaded is between .72/.77. E85 is almost exactly .79.

What is it with fuel tank levels? Just had a long discussion on the MG board about fuel guage readings - at the end of the day the critical measure is when the tank is near empty and the float will be resting on the bottom of the tank long before the last fuel is emptied so the SG is hardly relevant!

It's a Ranger thing, they use a tank of fuel so quickly- in order to get to all your daily destinations you need to know precisely how much you have left. The resistor 410 found broken in his fuel pump float circuit ensures you get the needle in the same place in relation to the volume in the tank so if you run E85 all the time then you are forced by availability to fill up with regular unleaded you will have a clue.

Yeah, but how accurate is the gauge anyway?

Our Rover has a computer on board that calculates the current range based on recent consumption and fuel volume in the two tanks - it is never anywhere near accurate but the low fuel light comes on with a couple of gallons left in there so we treat that as a "stop at next fuel station" warning though usually I refill once it gets to the half full mark.

My goal is just to get the gauge working
The flex fuel 3.0 went the way of the dodo bird

All of our 96+ fords have a "miles to empty" setup on the overhead display.
As a mechanic I know fuel pumps are a PITA to replace so I keep my tank well over 1/4 full all the time (fuel cools the pump)

I cannot wait for the new sender unit to get here so I can hack the resistor off the wiring harness and solder it onto the OEM Ford sender
I ordered the cheapest sender and pump I could get, $75!! So I am planning to retain the 1999 Ford sender unit and new Carter pump I just installed
I simply want to install this circuit board and put the bed back on..... then I can finally drive this converted 4.0 truck!
If it is just a resistor, just know it has a power wire going to it. The same red/yellow that powers the anti slosh module and the fuel cap indicator sensors.

The white 99 stepside 5.0 we built when we first moved to Idaho also had this dooo dad on the fuel pump. that truck is still running around town as a daily driver.
If it was still a 3.0 it would have gone to the crusher by now, needed engine and trans

Thanks to the 3.0 I am able to buy more low mile trucks :) People do not change their oil or maintenance their cooling system = more builders for me!
