The ranger can be modified to accept the hinges, I have a couple sets but haven't put them in.

The slot the ranger hinge sits in isn't wide enough or long enough to accept the expo hinge. You have to make it larger.

The bolt holes don't line up exactly and it is better to use the "rivet nuts" like are used in the grab handle mod.

I plan on doing it... twice since I have 2 sets. In the big scheme of mods it seems like one of the less difficult ones but they don't bolt right on, they are not a direct replacement.

Good and well, but for reference here are the hinges.

First a typical ranger hinge:

The entire thing:

And now the expo hinge:

The expo hinge bolts right to the hood without issues. It is the firewall that gets tricky.

STILL an extremely worthwhile mod and if someone don't post a tutorial by the time I get around to doing mine then I will.

I used to yearn for six-pack abs... but I love beer so much, I went straight for the 12-pack abs instead!

Jim, what year Expo are those hinges on? I have a pair off of a 2001 Expo Sport. They only have two bolt holes (although they still aren't the same pattern as the Ranger).

It's that green 99 I have. The one that's so clean I'm having issues with stripping it. I went out and started it today and let it warm up.

Kind of a shame to strip a nice vehicle, but a nice vehicle is what you want for a donor. Such a quandary!

Not sure the Explorer hinges will help all that much.

Those hinges with the built in/on supports are for a fairly lightweight aluminum hood and the later Ranger FRP hood is way to heavy for the supports.

If the supports were replaced with stronger ones to better take on the added weight, I'd fear the structure of the hinges and hood may not survive.

Perhaps a DIY effort to add supports further forward on the hood? There was a kit on the market some years ago but I've not seen one advertised in quite a while.

A quick poke around finds "RedLineTuning" does a kit. About $85.

Looks fairly easy to install.

Saw those kits. Problem with those was; when the hood was open, the gas shock was always in the way... at least on the ones I saw.

Those struts are usual available with different load ratings for weight and despite if there was a failure you'd just be at a temporary sq 1 again until remedied. The redline tuning kits are nice but where they mount is on the fender sides and just when you think that's great, as someone mentioned there right in the way of accessing something at a later time.

I'd be torn on doing either setup as the pros/cons seem to wash one another from set to set.

Then there's this option with plates that seem to mount behind the Ranger Hinge brackets...

Hood Struts, 84-90 Bronco II, 83-2011 Ranger, 91-2002 Explorer

Well, considering how much easier it is to just pull factory bolts, pop the plates in there, bolt it back up, as Like original fitment of YOUR hinges... rather than drive around/across town, scour a yard, pay for the parts and pull them yourself.. new struts not 5-8 yrs old, yada yada. And considering it' an actual part still made for a near 7 yr old dead platform that' STILL AVAILABLE.. what' your time worth?

I realize everyone's on a budget and expendable income is a kind of a thing of the past but it' not really anymore expensive than our money not having the value and buying power it once had thanks to inflationary means. Simply put, cost of materials and man hours probably for a product that' limited supply anyway at least in their pricing structures is paying more that $7.50 an hr.. lol

Not busting anyone' balls over it but I know myself, I've spent more as someone who doesn' really drink at a bar for food and beers than the cost of those or who knows what else worse I've wasted money on. Wow, I need to go look for some stuff of my own now hahahha

too gosh-damn funny...

I think next month I may set aside allocated funds as an extra quick project and order a set of these just for product testing and the opportunity to both do a write up here for others to read with a follow up a few months later for the sake of a performance rating short term wise...
