On my 1994 XLT 4x4 it acts like the 4x4 stays on after I turn it off. I have to turn it on and off 2 or 3 times to finally get it to disengage. Where can I find a good diagnosis manual to use that tells how to diagnose it,all I've found are ones that tell how to change parts? I found 1 for the 1999,could I use it or are the specs on the components different? What areas are more likely the cause,the switch,GEM or motor on the transfer case? Thanks for any help.

I am not a mechanic but I too have this problem, especially in Low Range but with a little jerking, and backing up and braking, mine comes out of 4X.

I have been told, by mechanic friends, that the 4x Actuation Solenoid is going bad but sometime a little lube will help.

If the 4x gets stuck engaged, trying backing up and applied the brakes or jerking the truck in a forward motion may get things released.

I vote the actuator motor.

Mine stuck the first time I used it. Then I put it in and out of low and high about 120 times and now it works just fine. I think it was just under used.

According to a mechanic friend of mine, yes I do have one friend, the Actuator Motor, is my problem.

If you don't use it often enough, much like the E-brake cable sticking because you dont feel a need to use it, you just need to use it every so often otherwise things create issues.

No I don't use it much,have only had it 4 years and the last few winters we haven't had enough snow to really need it. I've never had trouble before until this past winter. I used it a couple of times playing around in the yard and that's when it started. I'll take if off and tear it apart and check it out. I've found rebuild instructions on another board that sounds easy enough.

I've seen people say that once a month, you should just engage it whilst you reverse out the driveway, then turn off before driving away.

I always use 4H, 4L is used but very, very little anymore and 4L is what I have the most trouble with.

When I can't get the TC in or out of 4x, then I will see about getting a new actuator solenoid.

Since I have moved to SoCal and the new driveway has a incline with loose gravel, I am using the 4H a lot more on it and some of the back roads get a little muddy when it rains, well maybe a lot muddy, but it makes me go to 4H a lot. I should do some lube work on the mechanism and see if that will help 4L. The wife got rid of her VW TDI FWD, got enough in the buyback to get a new Honda CRV all wheel drive and a little extra... none for me though. She said she needed the all wheel drive to get through the mud so I guess the mud s more than I thought.

Well I turned it on and off several times and it seems to have loosened things up,it's working fine now.

Shift the T/C in and run in, 4x for a short while ever week; keeps things working and lubbricated.
