Im not sure he wont send me an invoice until I verify it works!! LMFAO
I can ask him
He can build you a complete transmission also with some MAJOR upgrades the 4r70w is just now being able to handle...
Just don't be a in hurry....Brett is like me he does this on the side, he has a desk job and a family with several girls of various ages, he builds all sorts of cool stuff (early Mustangs) including the neighborhood fix it guy for just about everyone within a 30 mile radius so a trans build can take like a 3 months or a year...........just depends on his work load

All right we finally got her up on the lift and installed the new re worked valve body, new filter, 13.5 quarts of STP mercon V (system only holds 13-14 quarts so it looks like we got it ALL)
I chose to bypass the radiator fluid cooler and run dual trans coolers instead...it will be interesting to watch transmission temps with this setup, my research says it will cool just fine this way without the risk of the fluid/fluid cooler contaminating our fresh trans.
Was only able to do a short road test, but she shifts smoothly and is very responsive. We have a slight exhaust leak at the down pipe, so before we go tearing down two miles of snow/slush road so we can road test on the highway I wanted to fix the leak. Looking forward to finding out if shes good up to 75 mph!!
So far she feels awesome!
Maybe now Brett will send me an invoice for the VB work

Valve body is installed with 25 bolts, they are torqued in sequence, first to 15 in pounds then finally to 95 inch pounds
Our VB here is using the 98+ style solenoids even though our PCM is a 97, the wiring was re worked to match the 98+ internal trans wiring harness

old setup, had to cut, remove and flare a metal line so we can plumb dual coolers

final routing:

trimming plastic

dual stock coolers looking like factory install

Running and getting 13.5 quarts of the expensive juice
See our wicked cool trans fill funnel? It actually has a nipple that sits directly in the 5.0 top plate...like it was made for filling 4r70w in a 5.0 truck!

Exhaust leak is fixed,   bolts on the pass downpipe were not tight. Fixed now!

Put truck on lift made it easy to fix leak......and take more pics for your eyes to parooooooze
We made a simple skid plate for the trans lines and cooler stack from a spare Explorer skid, worked out really really well!
Bent it up with the press to get correct angles and spacing, the rest was done with a grinder

Skid front view:

can still access radiator drain, hoses, and oil filter easily...this is waaaaaay better then the plastic catch tray that comes factory...

really adds some protection for the trans cooler lines and radiator.

Final pics of the undercarriage, first up the running board install and mounts, sorry they have a little mud on them :)
front, almost stock Ranger

rear, custom fab

trimmed/spaced factory ranger skidplate to clear 4406e t case:

while under the truck we returned the fog lights to a stock halogen bulb and wiring, the truck came to us with crappy HID ballast and bulbs

Here's a shot of the exhaust/driveshaft, t case, trans, etc.....I'm getting used to working over my head! So nice!

We cannot drive this ranger on the road yet.....our driveway is too nasty mix of snow ice slush mud and running water, we have been using snow tracks to commute.... so I plan to run the bulldozer and make the road passable so we can test run this truck not just out front but on the highway.... should be interesting!
Stay tuned....

Man, that's gotta suck.  Maybe you should consider an asphalt driveway... oh wait, that would really be a ROAD! :)

she will be for sale shortly needs road test and a windshield! I'm buttoning up the little things like corner lights, license plate lights, interior lights
She is shifting very very well! I cannot wait to put tags on it and drive to town for glass

Man, that's gotta suck.  Maybe you should consider an asphalt driveway... oh wait, that would really be a ROAD!

I/We 4x4 every single day living back here. I build custom off road vehicles so I figured it was fitting. The forest road we call a driveway to home was built by loggers many moons ago. Now it is built and maintained by us the property owners back here. This time of year I should be on a snowmobile every day, but we have been getting rain on top of ice snow for weeks, fine with me we just run snow tracks or big tires depending...
The plow truck was keeping things open, until the bottom fell out of the road (ice layer turns to slush) and the water started running...oh and she broke the TTB suspension, but we got that fixed
Warm January that is for sure. I am happy with moisture, with all this rain up here in the PNW at least some fire seasons are passable without incident
The Ranger however might need some help getting out of here right now, I did my best to fix a couple of water spots yesterday (dozer)...we will go back at it this weekend, until then atv's
The machine we use the most has a cab, wiper, heater, seats 6, so its not like we are roughing it too bad, modern homesteading they call it.

Having a difficult road also has advantages in other ways, you see we want to buy up a couple of more lots that are around us.......so having the road a mess works in my favor.
I am in the market for a used road grader, that will make things easier........
Signed up for adventure, we found some. 3 moose hanging around the last few days......... I'm hoping for some more winter, it's only Feb now sheesh should be snowing not rain

What's the plural of moose.... meese?
I don't like them, they don't taste good. Yes I have eaten Moose. Elk was the best wild animal I have ever munched on.

I hear they like stomping humans to death is that just a rumor or does it really happen outside of youtube videos?

off topic, that is a really cool truck you have there  :)

Honestly I had no idea this part of Idaho even existed until we started looking for places to move from Colorado.
Living in the mountains of Colorado I never thought I would leave......but CO has been in a drought for many many years and the threat of fire was getting pretty nasty. CA and New York has decided that CO is now a great place to stop and live, so the boom was on and our property values were skyrocketing so we started to look for a place that had mountains (snow), wilderness (4x4ing, snowmachines), and water.....WY is out, only a few mountains and less water, Montana similar any water is super expensive.....this search led us to the panhandle of Idaho! I too thought "Idaho? WTH, potatoes right?" LOL WRONG!!
Now South Idaho and the Boise area is the fastest growing city in the US.....but that's a whole other world from where we live

Don't you lump us in with those southern Idaho people!!!
We are NORTH IDAHO! (I am 60+/- miles from Canada)
Did you know North Idaho tried to succeed from the South? There is a large mountain range right down the middle of the state, in fact if you want to travel to South Idaho from North you leave the state to do so, there are no really good roads through so you either go into Washington or Montana and then South......North Idaho is a whole different place. They say its the last great wilderness, it's either North Idaho or Alaska left in the USA. They are right..... I live at the base of the selkirk mountains and 18 miles to the East is the cabinet mountains, Washington is 35 miles away, Montana is 35 miles away.....we are between two mountain ranges and there is a huge lake to our South, one way in and one way out so to speak.........If you come to North Idaho looking to be outdoors you will throw rocks at everywhere else...this place is amazing. Now it takes a certain kind of crazy to want to live up here, we get short short days in the winter, sun up at 7am and down at 4pm during the winter solstice....but in the Summer time sun up at 5 and down at 11 pm!! Want to talk about being able to get alot done?

We have Eagles that fly over us daily, I have river otters that swim past I can see from my desk. We have some very very large cats back here, lions and bobcats, we have few different types of bears, even grizzly are around here. There have been wolves spotted around here too in the last few years, although those sightings are rare. We have lots of white tail deer, tons of ELK and of course the MOOSE. The moose are the most dangerous animals, yes that is true.
Their legs are long and they are heavy so when they strike a vehicle often they go through the windshield, this is very dangerous! Way worse then hitting a deer.
So some fun facts about moose I have learned, more then one Moose is "Mooses" lol moose are interesting creatures due to their diet of ruffage their digestion systems produce alot of heat...so a moose is always hot. During winter they are in their habitat loving life, nice and cool, less predators to worry about less people...the roads are easy travels so we get to see Moose alot during the winter. In the summer time when the temps are hot the moose are already pissed off due to overheating, and during mating season you just don't want to have anything to do with a male moose. The last thing we want to see in the summer is a big boy standing in the road. You could be sitting there waiting for him to move for a long long time....you do NOT want to press them with the ATV or whatever, they will charge you and it can take ALOT to stop a charging moose....like a shotgun type of alot they will stomp your machine, rip trucks apart with their rack, stomp you to smithereens, etc........When we come across a moose it is best to just let them run off or do their thing, you do NOT want to push a moose or get between mama and he calves....mama moose will take on your vehicle and stomp you to pieces. They have even been known to turn around and take on a train locomotive....seriously!!!!!! Moose are not to be messed with. I carry a sidearm for protection back here for cats and for bears but mostly for the moose. It is best to carry a revolver with rubber bullets in the first two chambers, sometimes the rubber rounds will be enough to stop a charging moose and sometimes (often) it is not, so the rest of the rounds would be lethal. Now your in big trouble if you have to stand your ground and take down a moose its time to call it in... do not make it a habit there are big punishments for taking out wildlife even if it is to protect yourself.
So yeah we live with the moose daily, I love them, they are   awe inspiring animals.... we have been lucky just to observe them, no encounters yet. My neighbor has been back here 13 years, he has had to shoot two moose because they were charging he, his wife and young kids on the atv. Not fun.

Such is life back here in the forest on a river where man has never really cleared the land or built infastructure and roads, our property has never been logged, we have cedar trees that are 7-8' around at the base, we are on the river at the base of a mountain in a river valley that gets tons of snow. I have access to thousands and thousands of acres of un touched wilderness out my back door and there is water all around. This is EXACTLY what I was built for...I grew up in the suburbs but always felt like I belonged in the woods, it must be the boy scout in me :) We used to spend all of our time trying to get time and prepared to go camping, just to be able to spend 1.5 days in the woods.....now we live where we camp, dream come true!!
Oh FYI I'm a vegetarian although I do eat fish from time to time (pescatarian they call it), it has been over 5 years since I ate meat, the moose, elk, deer are in no danger of being hunted here at our house and they seem to know it!!

It sounds like you love it there! If it is that far out in the boondocks, how do you get utilities like electric and internet?  My wife is from upper Michigan, the “UP”. Beautiful country up there with clean air. You are one lucky man!  BTW, even though I am a card-carrying carnivore, the moose, elk and other wildlife would still be safe from me!

We are 100% off grid, we generate our own electricity. This place is solar powered and propane powered with diesel and gasoline backup systems
Our whole house (6 people) runs off 8ea 12V lithium ion batteries in a 48V system state of the art! There are plans in the works for micro hydro power since we have so much flowing water and very little sunshine in winter.
Internet is provided through Hughes Net (satellite) and also by local cell towers (verizon)
Led lights, solar power, lithium ion batteries, satellite internet, these things allow modern homesteading to be a real alternative these days. We have given up some things like our super high speed internet where we had 5 playstations online at a time playing games...we can't do that here...at least not yet...worth it! No power outages, no power bills aside from parts and fuel, no water bills, no trash service, no cable bill, etc etc....
I would not trade this for the world! Great way to raise some kids, "back to our roots" I call it......

Just paid some "on the grid" utility bills.  Electric/Gas was a shade under $300 (and that was low for this time of year). Water/sewage run between $100 and $125 per month.  We dumped cable and landline phone about 3 years ago, so Internet only is $35.00 a month. I'm sure the solar and backup systems cost a pretty penny, but it would end up cheap compared to the monthly alternative that never ends and only keeps increasing.

You got it!
Off the grid is becoming more and more plausible with modern technology, there is a big up front cost for a setup like ours....but it should produce power for 10-15 years with NO maintenance (Lithium ion batteries are sealed)
Only cost is propane which we buy in the fall when its cheap, and maintenance parts for the propane generator.

The 98 ranger has been road tested, it drives awesome!
There are no vibrations up to 75, the transmission is working perfectly, the valve body that Brett built is shifting like brand new. The valve body was built to remove the "lazy factory shifting settings" and that is exactly what it is doing, this transmission is super responsive. Second gear shift is more firm then stock, downshifts are not harsh but are firm.
The 4x4 is working awesome, the exhaust sounds really really nice, there are no noises or rattles and this truck is ready for a windshield. Starts with the bump of the key, it really feels like a brand new vehicle, one of the cleanest smoothest rigs I have built and driven, I am very pleased with the results. Everyone is very impressed with these tires! This will make a fantastic truck for somebody.
Truck has been listed for sale, no trailer needed! Bring cash :)

I have actually checked the cost of tickets to the Spokane international airport, prior to this. If you ever do a short cab you might get to meet me.

Don't you just hate it when you throw something away, then need it later and have to go buy it?

I got extras, would cost more to ship them than you could get them for on e-bay with shipping. I like the expo caps better than the ranger caps with the fake lug nuts.

funny you say that, the truck ended up with explorer style center caps because I never did find good ranger ones.
Truck has been sold, today 3/22

I am delivering her tomorrow with the AC charged, a full size spare and new windshield
Charging the ac now.....never put off till tomorrow what you should do today!
I should have charged the ac a month ago....but it was so cold! Now I am doing it last minute since the new buyer was here today and wants the truck tomorrow!
My punishment for procrastinating is wiring. Turns out I had one more wire to move in order to make the ac compressor work properly
details on that later.....right now I gotta go charge some AC

The good news is her new home is in town so not only do I get to see her around I also get to be her mechanic for the new owner. Sometimes it is more about the people these trucks bring together then the trucks themselves........
