I just checked the Autolite spark plug part number for your application over on Rockauto.com; the correct part number is APP103 or APP103DP2; There is also an Iridium Autolite plug available, the Autolite part number is XP103 or XP103DP2. Don't forget the rebate as it drops the price to $1.31 each for the double plats and $1.42 for the iridium ones.

Don't put anything else but Motorcraft or Autolite plugs. Rangers are fussey on what you put in them.

Thanks guys.I'm sticking with Motorcraft.
I just want to know why ,Ford is telling me to use a different
plug,other than the orginal.It's run perfect,with almost
95,000 on her.Sort of like telling me to fix it,when its not broken.

A number of years ago, the FM "fine wire" plugs superseded the P and PP plugs that went before them and now the N "copper core" plugs have replaced the FM's. No worries. You should be OK with either FM or N. If you had good luck with the FMs and can still find them, why not?

I tried the E3 premium and had issues with misfires after about 4k. All the parts place had in stock to fit were NGK and they were crap right from the beginning. I had them order Motorcraft and they got me the SP-413.

The SP-413 is nickel plated copper and is good for 30K miles. At 33k miles the gap can be more than double due to electrode erosion so they have to be changed. My belief is the duel fire coils wear them prematurely. I have 10k on my most recent set of SP-413's

Pep Boys lists the Motorcraft SP-500 as the Finewire Platinum-Tip with a 100k service cycle.

I had a similar massive problem trying to replace my 3.0 plugs - all the reference stuff is superseded, replaced, conflicted, the materials don't even play out properly.

Double plat were spec'd but only so they lasted 100k - the 3.0 uses wasted spark, it means one bank fires from the center electrode to the outer, and the other bank is the opposite.

Ford, from the factory, fitted one type to one bank, and another type to the other bank - one side is cheaper than the other....

I decided to stop pissing around with the autolites and motorcraft plugs, depending on who i looked up, or which ford dealer i called, i got conflicting results.

Short version, i fit regular NGK plugs (see below) which will last a regular 20k-30k miles, they're regular cheap priced plugs so that's all good.
Just bear in mind that gap matters, these plugs came too closed up so needed opening to the correct gap first.

Thank you guys
Hey Tsquare,I looked those SP 500s on e-bay,2 of the 3
venders i looked at,said those are compatible.1 said they weren't.
I wonder why ??
Anyway,i'm not worried about it now, truck runs great with the old ones.I'll
wait till 100,000k,and see how it's running. But in the meantime,
i know i already have wires, and sp413s,which i might exchange later.I try to stay a step ahead of future maintenance.
see ya,old retired guy:cheers:cheers:frd

Thank you guys Hey Tsquare,I looked those SP 500s on e-bay,2 of the 3  venders i looked at,said those are compatible.1 said they weren't. I wonder why ??

fordparts.com site says the SP500 is for 2006 3.0 Flex Fuel Ranger and the SP413 is for 2006 non-FFV 3.0 Ranger. Hard to understand since Ford did not make any FFV Rangers after 2003...

Also, SP500 doesn't seem like a legit replacement for SP432 because it's a different heat range.

This kind of BS is all too common in parts lists. Usually in aftermarket info but OEMs are sometimes guilty of it too.

If you want a deal on some SP432's, take a look at Rock Auto. They're closing them out for $1.81 plus shipping. Usual parts store price for Motorcraft finewires is about $4~6, dealer could be double that.

Only 11 left though according to RA.

And yet even Rockauto say that's only for up to 2003.

Thank you guys !
Thats good to know about the SP 500s.
No i didn't check the gap on my orginals, didn't think of that. When it warms up,and if i don't forget,i'll check.
Why is it so hard getting the right plugs, these days.I never had trouble on my past f-150s,or past f-250.

Because the engine is so old they don't care.

Either way, looks like there are various plugs can filter down for you - mine was running "fine", but the gaps were nearly 100 thou...

Unfortunately, Ford stopped including the spark plug numbers in the 2004+ owner's manuals. Just a note about "see your dealer", making it impossible to crosscheck that way.

Yeah, i noticed their specifications started being, see dealer, and different plugs in each bank. Literally referring to match plugs you pulled with the new ones and make sure they go back in the same places!

Anyway, i did call around when i was looking for plugs, some dealers gave me replaced parts, others didn't confirm the same plugs were right at all :(

Good to know about the SP500. I have a $10 gift card that expires in 2 days that I was going to use against a set of these for my truck.

Just another note, the local Ford dealer sells the SP-413 for $11.55 per plug.

I'm soooooo confused!
Trying to make sense of my owner's manual plug recommendations  is making me :crazy

From what I've read here I guess for my '98 4.0 the APP103 is the current replacement plug for AGSF-22PP?

Also, what's up with the manual recommendation of "Cyls 1, 2 & 3 have a PG suffix...Cyls 4,5 & 6 have a P suff.". I mean...WTF????
I run 2 different temp plugs in my Harley, but that's to keep both cyls the same running temps.

Yup, that's because of the wasted spark system, one bank has double platinum plugs spec'd and the other only single platinum.

One side sparks from center to outside, the other is switched around - meaning it wears either the outside or the inside depending on which bank it's in.

After spending some time going through this, for once, i'm very happy not to go with the factory fitted plug, i just chose the right NGK plugs i pic'd on the previous page, gap them correctly and they're running very well.

Smart move, simple solution and the price is right. Go to Rockauto ( or the like), order the double plats or the iriduim, use the rebate which makes them cost a a bit over a buck, and be done with it.

Edit: rebate form..... https://www.autoliterebates.com/Home.aspx

I've indexed plugs for race cars & Harleys so I had a feeling that the reason was probably something along those lines.

So what....if I went with the NGKs or even the Autolite APP103s I'll still have to manually index one side? {Assuming that one side will already be indexed out of the box...} Or am I missing something here? :squint:
