Finally working more and now being able to throw money at parts, Now I'm fighting time to put them on or in.

But for the most part, I'm banging 2nd gear to for more things getting done.

Spent a few years building up a 1984 Ranger for a friend of mine. Started off just wanting something to go to Yellowstone once a year....4 years later and after deciding he 4.0 didnt make enough power we ended up with this. Darth Ranger the "fishing truck"
302 V8 makes 340 HP, built 4r70w, NP205 twin stick, 4wheel discs, D35 ttb,  31 spline 8.8, and custom bumper to bumper. The 98 bed/shell is a camper conversion with storage and sleeping platform, drop down dvd and silk lines flyrod holders. Batwing awning for shade next to the river, custom everything, rock lights, front and rear camera's, dual batteries, and more. We built this thing to get 15-18 mpg on the highway, small lift to stay streetable but still tackle the trails. This is our Ranger "overland" build. This truck took over my life for like 4 years, it was worth it!
Rangers are awesome!

Sent out the steering knuckles for media blasting.. came back great. Now Friday they get dropped off for powder coating.

Decided to do the Dust shields too..

And I was pleasantly surprised if not geeked for UPS to hit my address early in the am rather than waiting the entire afternoon for my Snorkel Kit.  Install pics of course will follow.

And surprise! Doesn't interfere with either the cowl or ditch lights or their patterns of light thrown during a hand-held mock up. I was bugging that I would have an issue with one or both and have to move them.

I need to get ahold of my MAC or Snap-on guy for two tools I want, one as a WANT (ball joint press), the other as a replacement since its in storage back home at the 'Rents in Michigan and virtually unreachable. Oh well.. never bad to have more than one hole saw kit I guess.

Extremely happy with my OTC ball joint press and kit I bought the big screw press for doing diesel trucks
OTC Big C:
https://www.amazon.com/OTC-6736-C-Frame-Forcing-Assembly/dp/B005J3LOSK/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1525784477&sr=8-7&keywords=OTC+ball+joint+press

Along w my 20 ton HF press I can do most ball joints and pressing in house or on the truck

Can't wait to see how you do the snorkel
I spent an entire day trimming the fender flare around the snorkel for the perfect fit on my wifes FJ

I have never been able to get powder coat to work well for me on undercarriage parts, once they get scratched/pitted or if the PC isn't perfect water gets under it and soon after it all needs re-done

Looking forward to seeing how this turns out!

Undrstm8ed ,

Nice stuff, power coating... wow; is it for durability ?

I had some parts powder coated, what I thought as a great job and in about two years later the coating was rusting off.  Probably poor pre work but it is what it is !

I am not a fan of Powder coating for under carriage parts unless we are talking a show truck.

have you been doing other powder coating, how has it help up ?

Like the Snorkel !

I would have that flashing ground off and then shot peened before powder coating - sharp edges leave the coating thin and prone to water getting under the coating lifting it off in sheets.

Better still is to use POR 15 or a chassis black and spray it over a zinc rich primer.

Today I looked at the big box leaning up against my couch, swigged my coffee, looked out on the property at the truck.

I opened up the box, pulled some parts out.., looked out at the truck, chased my thoughts with another gulp of coffee and pushed the parts back in the box..

After the second go around I grabbed my keys, my coffee, dragging the big box in tow, my small MAC hand-tool bag, some tape, a sharpie, and my auto-center punch, and popped the hood...

I couldn't help myself further.

This isn't going to be in write up fashion but albeit heavy picture ladened as usual. I assembled some tools and things I would need.

The canvas was waiting.

Now if you're squeemish about drilling holes in your car/truck, let alone 95mm (3.75") ones.. I'll be happy to zip a hole in any panel for a small fee or donation on your part.

After checking several times as to where it should line up, how it would line up, I finally settled on what I thought was the best position. Keep in mind this kit https://www.12degnorth.com/product-page/safari-snorkel-for-toyota-land-cruiser-60-series-ss60hf isn't meant for a Ranger, just happens to be the closest to the character lines and is a quality part with nearly all its components in one box, add some extras you wouldn't be using.

I marked my holes, center punched them and grabbed my starting drill bit and the cordless.

Next was the inside OEM Air-Box; its removal, cleaning, and water proofing & dust sealing.

Pulled the two halves apart, cleaned the lower box up and prepped it for sealing.

Inside and out was sealed properly;

Once that was done, I went back to adding the 2nd coat of paint to paint the inside edges using an old model plane/car trick. this saved some time.

Added some thread locker to the studs.

Mounted the lower box back in and test fitted hoses and harnesses in the process.

Sealed up the last mechanical interference...

I'll have to post the rest of the pics and the final cut tomorrow.

Very nice I will have to check into this kit

Is there a water drain hole at the lowest spot pre air filter?

Being from CO I have never needed a snorkel, I had had my BII in water up to the headlights but not very often and that was in California LOL
I always gave my wife crap about having a snorkel for looks on her FJ
I am not laughing anymore
Now that I am in North Idaho we have water over our road right now to the tune of 18-24". If the river keeps rising I may in fact need a snorkel on my BII
so I appreciate this thread very much!

Good write-up !

I have thought of a Snorkel but for look s more than usefulness but have never Benn able to locate a kit that would fit the 2003 Ranger.

I like the way it looks on your vehicle !

Thanks for posting !

Continued...

Some of the fender work was a bit more tedious than expected BUT only for the fact that for whatever reason Safari/ARB decided to include a 75mm cuffed hose duct and a 74mm aluminum elbow.., well, perhaps on the Land Cruiser the inner angles are different. But for me, I grew tired of fighting not having three or four arms so I pulled the fender. You can see how the tolerances were very close in the next 2 pics.

Once I pulled the fender it gave me an opportunity to work at something rather then under it and fighting the tight tolerances and angles for the duct work attachments and inspect under the fender for any issues... Maybe I should have just got some shorty Jeep fenders too.. Naahhhh lol

Now, I've seen a few of these kits done already on other Rangers with similar results and they all started off good and then when they got to the end, they got desperate or uncreative/cheap and turned a bunch of hard work into a   job sad to say. I went out of my way to order a second cuffed duct from Safari to do an outstanding and reliable, and sealed setup that looks good and performs well.

Anyone telling you that for $6.99 Dryer vent and a roll of duct tape that fell behind the bench finally made their kit all that much better and worth sacrificing a possible engine for after the investment they put in already.. I have no words outside of spend some money and take some pride in your efforts, you had your work cutout for you may as well go for the gold and finish right.

And that pretty much completes the snorkel minus a height adjustment needed to keep from smacking the Flip-Pac on to the top of the snorkel head-duct, but that's another day.

thanks for reading.., be back in a few days with more updates as the front end all gets re done.

I have an mechanic friend of mine, well he was a couple years younger than me and passed a few years ago in a Motorcycle crash but he was a advocate of OTC tools, and I've borrowed the smaller version from him. It worked out pretty well actually and I did forget about OTC. Unfortunately for me, Snap-On and MAC will let me throw $2-3k on a truck accounts for tools and just come by once a week for a payment. lol ughhh

As for the trim work on the FJ, I bet it was worth all the time too. My problem as well as everyone else's that's a Ranger owner is that this kit is only "close" and so meticulous efforts slightly unseen and unknown will neglect some function > form. I will have to get a down the fender shot during the day tomorrow. I could have sat there for hours with a multitude of different thickness washers and shimmed it to perfection but.. it came out good enough for government work.

And I've seen the PC issue happen before. Part of prep work and a comment that @Chris made all contribute. Time will tell in the end..

Ive had other items PC before with good results and lasting too.. As well as Zinc plating and other stuff. Some of its for durability but more for aesthetics and appearances. At one time, even my old track car was clean enough to lick off the oil pan most days. I love working on cars but I hate getting dirty. Some of that stems from a very strict set of parental units. ANYTHING I did to my cars in the garage had to be completely spotless of stains or residue. I learned how to pull FWD cars apart and not get anything on the floor. Each time the cars came in, they got cleaner and cleaner making less chances for dirt. rough childhood lol

The new frame will be my first complete "off frame" rework/upfitting.. And that, as well as many components, will be all powder coated for various reasons. Nothing to shiny, just done well.

Good note for all.. I learned that a while back and will spend the time knifing these parts down. Thanks for the reminder Chris

I sealed up the entire intake box in/out with exception of one hole. I wasn't quite sure if I should leave it for drainage or not and from further research, I'm being told to seal it all so I'll be going back in tomorrow to do that one lil .25" hole left.

And for not having a snorkel:

That water was 30" deep 2.5 hrs later, in some areas well over 35" as the water started to slightly skim over the front of the bonnet itself at the farthest end of 80 yards of mid 40* water.

MY trail partners 4x 4Runner didn't make it. This was the first water-crossing we came to on the South to North bound Mojave trail. This was like 48 miles into the 168 mile trek and it really took the wind out of his sails. Thankfully I had a full tool kit, and an Autistic Zone was only 54 miles away once we got back to the main road. Reworked the entire upper end, got water out of cylinders, had near 6 seconds of water pour out of the oil pan before I saw oil let alone solid oil. I got him back together and running and we went on. I stopped in Vegas, he went to St George then Billings Montana for work.

Since I've not been able to prove there's much difference in the fenders as of yet from what I'm told. I would say this is as close as you're going to get. My ONLY advice is if you're remotely emotional to your vehicle(s) to take all things into consideration because once that template goes on and you drill a 3.75" hole in the side of it, you're committed and its a done deal. Not that you couldn't get another fender and replace it, but your virgin bodied rig has been deflowered regardless.

Once I get a chance to create a new Multi-carrier bumper, the 48" Hi-lift will be put on the rear bumper I think and the new hood and front end will come into play. Depending on money flow, everyone may see an even MORE creative snorkel kit to match the new fenders.

Fenders are quite similar 98-2011
Very nicely done, looking forward to seeing the height adjustment to clear the flip pak

I sealed the water drainage hole on the FJ as well, no issues after two+ years of use

We used a James Duff Bronco II rear bumper on my buddies 84 Ranger, it carries fuel, hi lift and tire. The best part is it has "JD" in the fuel carrier and my friends name is JD so it worked out really well

My parents were similar, I usually work in a very very clean space, most procedures on vehicles are alot like surgery, dirt can be nowhere near the working area or tools and I hate cleaning floors so why not keep the mess from happening in the first place! That all works out very well if you work alone...once you have kids in the shop its just another battle to fight LOL

Very well done! No hydrolock for you!

Took care of that last hole this afternoon.. sorry, wasn't worth a new pic. ha

Then, I must have the bug..

Went ahead and bought today a https://www.12degnorth.com/product-page/20-g3-single-row-led-light-bar to update the front bumper with some additional forward facing light and have something tucked away sort of low key but useful until I do the 36-40" up top.

The pods work great but the forwards are spots and shine far down the road for sure. The side (ditch) lights are combo spot-flood and obviously aimed in a whole other direction. And let admit fact, 93' Ford Ranger headlights weren't all that great in their time let alone now and out in the middle of no where, NV. USA; I swear one of these days I'll be the victim of a suicidal wild burro.

The pods already somewhat helped in preventing it once...

Also, for some research purposes for a couple other interested parties, on top of myself with an idea, and to aid in helping design some lighting options for their rigs. I had to finally bring in and order a 12" version of the above light too and some additional lenses for swapping pieces to test light patterns and optics. Either way of the 6" or the 12" version I'll have the answers I need for the needs and wants of others in their builds and help them make some better informed decisions.

Those should be here in a few days so some updates w/pics soon again.

Decided I needed to do something today so after hours I decided to mount the 20" SR light bar into the front bumper. I had to finesse it in there and with the way I inverted the brackets to make accessing the bolts more difficult, it also was difficult in the assembly thereof as well. I took some pics as usual but due to photobucket deciding to be picky and irritating. I'll upload them tomorrow with other pics of the Camburg SS brake lines for the fronts installed as those will be getting knocked out too. Drivers side Brake line just went south for sure and its now a safety concern and well we know how Vegas drivers are.. and NO can do!

In the interim, I spent a great deal of time creating a circuitry for what was the only realistic option for switching for the Ranger. Unfortunately while everyone else in the automotive industry seemed to have seen the writing on the wall that "Carling" type switches would one day be the industry standard and norm. Ford implemented some horizontal BS and didn't even take into consideration that someone would want/need to add to the design somehow. NOPE... Not a deal breaker.. just got creative one day and went old school. I just cant wait to get rid of this blue interior and exteriors!

Anyway, wouldnt you know it.. 3 years or so in and switch one LED failed. The switch works as it operates the A-Pillar/Cowl cube lights. but the indicator seemed to give up the ghost. I had purchased a few extras of each color so I do have spares. I guess the good news is I won't have to wait for a replacement. But I will have to disassemble some of the dash work, de-solder the switch leads, replace it, solder it and reassemble. Then it will be a complete and telling system again as the odd color scheme and pattern actually have a telling function.

Tonight I had checked...

Checked again..,

Sure enough.. the sumbitch went dark on me alright!

Then if I have time.. I'll have to figure out what I am going to do with these soon. I could leave them off and just cover up the holes. I had pulled them off in preparation of wrapping the vehicle anyway but I held off due to too many other obstacles and modifications needing to be done before I could go there. I may have to be creative and modify them as well to go along with the end theme.

I also came to a conclusion of what wheels I will finally utilize on this build, the tires and size. A slight conversion will be needed as well a deposit to order. The Reveal soon! lol (Just in case I pull some last minute change on you all)...

Got to the brakes today.. Wow talk about pushing it.

I knew the line(s) were on borrowed time for 24 yr old vehicle but mos def pushed it.

Obviously if you have a single line here at the bulkhead near the frame, you're going to be dealing with a 4w ABS setup. There are different lines for that setup and I think those are also 95-97+.

If you have the two lines going in then you dont have ABS. Being a West coast truck, mine came apart pretty easily. Some of you up in that rust belt of the nation may find this to be a can of worms waiting to happen.

The Old...

The New...

Starting on the drivers side, I cracked loose both the top line with a line wrench and then the bacl line through the bulkhead. Now unknown to me at the time. The rear line has a clip with one side closed off. I forgot to take a pic of it but to make your job easier should you follow this. Loosen and remove the rear line first. This way the clip pulls free and then off as the sealed side won't let you slide the clip just off.

I may just have to take a pic of the clip and edit this post just to show what I mean later.

Once I popped the line off the bulkhead, the 14mm socket to the Banjo bolt on the Caliper. I like to clean all my parts during removal simply because it keeps the maintenance down and allows you to see things when trouble shooting other items of concern. Not to mention, i love working on cars/trucks but really hate getting dirty. So If I ever work on your rig and it comes back cleaner than you left it with me.. well now you know why.

Following my own advice in reverse, I put the rear line in loosely, same with the top line. Finished off tightening the rear line and then the top line again.. Voila ! You should end up with something like this on the drivers side..

The Passenger side..

Both lines should have the label always sticking outward (lol jk)..

Finally use the two new copper crush washers; slide the first one over the Banjo-bolt, the line block itself, another crush washer, and then thread the block to the caliper. Tighten but don't over tighten (26 ft/lb) is all that is needed.

Bleed the brakes, preferably with a competent friend, test drive slowly around the block/3 acres of property what have you, and enjoy the new positive pedal pressure and have a beer or two.

For me this is partially temporary. For one I just got a set of the 95-97' spindles for use with the dual piston calipers and brake brackets in order to rid myself of these single piston floating slide pin BS.

So once those brackets come back from powder coating, I'll be moving forward buttoning them up with new calipers and some custom spacers to move the caliper out an 1.5" or so, 12" Sport Trac rotors, inner seals, inner/outer bearings, and the proper Hawk performance pads for those calipers...

2nd thought of the day.. The failing switch indicator is officially fixed as well.. That was gonna bug me as bad as the blinking 12:00 on the VCR back in the day.

Thanks for reading as always...

Like the switch setup... nice !

The LEDs are bright in the pictures, I use separate indicators, which need extra room, but you can add resistors to the LED Power to reduce the brightness some.
Just me... !

the Side Panel Mounting of the switched is a great idea, I never noticed the step panels, worked out well !

Ok on "thinking about the Snorkel before modifying the truck", as much as I DID like the Snorkel I couldn't do the large hole needed !

Thanks for your comments, your ideas and the great modding !

Wow...

I had a huge informative answer and lost it with an accidental click of the mouse.. FML

So in short you get the short version. The built in indicators work for my single action needs. Although i can see the necessity for additional indicators for multiple position/function switches. The pattern and colors indicate position whether by feel or visually perfectly and keep it clean and simple. The LED's are all the same power, the blue just have more glare than other colors despite green and yellows being more sensitive to the human eyes. If I recall, we see yellow the fastest of all the color spectrums.

There is a total of 13 switches in the truck, nine of which are on the stepped panel, three hidden, and a single one yet to be plain view installed on the dash due to the complexity of the circuit with lighting and involvement with a 2nd switch mounted in the Flip-Pac that allows a single switch to throw on ALL of the lights at once for any purpose including to mimic a blinding scene out of "Close Encounters Of The 3rd Kind" - emergencies, campsite invasion by animals or other; from the cab or sleeping quarters without the key in the ignition. Its not complicated as it sounds, just time consuming. The other hidden switches are for other functions I won't go into, that's why they're hidden. ;)

As for the snorkel, its not for everyone as I stated before. Between 6-7 other forums - Ranger related or otherwise I have near 51K in views. I giggle thinking about how many people cringed or freaked out with a near 4" hole being drilled into the side of the truck. Cutting and drilling holes into a hunk of metal, plastic, rubber, and textiles has no effect on me. Some weirdos act as if you're dismembering or disfiguring a family member or pet of sorts... :crazy

Going to a local salvage yard to inquire the purchase of this frame or whole truck and technically everything that would be rolling stock to get it home and start stripping it down and prepping it for the things it will need.. will update if its still there.

Got there a little late..  but its mine now.., Whats left of body and bed. No wheels/tires, tailgate or drivers side door. and the engine and trans were pulled too. The important thing is I got the frame and entire Dana 35, rear axle intact and the dash panel isn't cracked all across the top and passenger side. It's also gray so I can start my interior swap to gray and black. It has the Bucket seats which might be worth saving but I dunno yet.

The wheels and tires are gone.. Anyone got any suggestions for dismounting off a flatbed trailer without wheels??

Well.. made a new friend concerning the needs of always needing a flat bed tow truck..

And when I get home today.. my lil diamond in the rough project will deepen the need for some serious polishing and cutting of new facets my friends.. been a long time since I've had the luxury of saying such a clich¨ but; "you ain't seen   yet...."
