I made a big decision today, I'm dropping the 2WD build and putting the 5.0 in the truck known on this forum as The Jalapeno.

Currently a good running 3.0 automatic 4WD with an unusually clean frame. There have been mods already, I have a shorty console, bucket seats, overhead console, lighted visors and a dome light from an expo.

The decision was made in part because I came across a 97 transmission and transfer case which matches my 97 5.0 I currently have in the 2WD unfinished project.

The transmission came with a story, it was lady owned, she was adjusting her sun roof and ran it off the road. It was pulled, a fellow ranger owner named Seth bought it, kept it inside and put it on Marketplace. I contacted him and even though he was a full hour and a half away he delivered it to me TODAY. It is in doors again, so it has never been outside or rained on.

The trans:

All I could find wrong with it was a busted speedo output, I plan on doing something different anyway including swapping the transfer case.

AND I got a free starter also YAY. Now I have a spare.

So let the fun begin, this is the subject truck:

I just hope I can keep up the steam, kind of lost it on the last project!

I dunno, it already has the FMS headers, thinking of driving it as is but I changed my entire plans in one day and bought a transmission, tomorrow might bring new ideas.

Yes Adam has officially been invited to the party!

I'm going through the check list now, I have been gathering parts for years.... let's see how smooth this can go.

If I lived closer I'd work for free just to see all this.  Sounds like the makings of the next reality car fixin' show.

Thanks, I think LOL. I just really want to get in to a V8 Ranger and I have done a LOT of work to this one already. I'm not going to spew any plans beyond the swap to see if I actually do the swap or not. So far it is looking good all the pieces are falling in to place.

4406E transfer case on the way. If it feels tight I'm running with it.

Yes. 3.0 and a healthy 140,000 mile non oil burning one. Stop laughing at the words 3.0 and healthy being used in the same sentence.

Ordered some O rings today, the dip stick tube ring leaks badly on the trans.
Ordered the lower radiator hose I will need
Ordered a new pressure gauge for my larger compressor so I can fire it up in case I need the air grinder cutoff wheel.
Contemplating pulling the bed off to get to the fuel pump and remove the regulator, run the wires for the busted trailer wires/bed lights/reverse camera all of which I already have. Except for the wires, I wanted to get a single cable with multiple wires but I might just end up making a harness.
I don't need shackles yet but I happen to have a set I could put on to avoid doing it when it is much less convenient.
I'm aching to put the 8.8 D2 with disks in but don't have access to a welder. This might change though.

What do you plan to do to the engine while it is out?

Before I put it in the vehicle it was in I put a timing chain, fresh gaskets except for head, tried to put a melling oil pump in it and it wouldn't fit... about a half inch too tall for either oil pan.

I put the original back in it. Put a stamped steel oil pan, had checked cam and lifters for wear. Valve cover gaskets, rear main seal front main seal.

I drove this thing from cleveland all the way down to Grove City, and the previous owner drove it from mid eastern Michigan to Cleveland to meet me. No strange smells, no overheating, no drops in oil pressure, it was powerful and responsive and quite quick actually I almost wanted to fix it up and drive it.

That's why I'm sick about having to buy another transmission, it had a perfectly good one in it but I thought I was doing a 2wd so I let it get flooded. Wasted money as usual.

I have no reason to believe there was anything wrong with the motor at all. I would love to tear it apart and put some things on it but since it works(ed) and the goal is daily driver AND I'm doing this at home in my garage AND I'm not rich... I just want to do it at all LOL.

did water get inside the trans that sat outside? Dipstick hole was open to atmosphere?

Engine sounds nice! Probably doesnt need anything. When I converted to 5.0 back in 2005 I did not do anything to the engine either, no gaskets, no seals, just plugs and some tune up parts....... still runs great! It leaks a little oil from the rear main, a little oily around the pan gasket now, otherwise still going perfectly well 15 years later. The engine had 72K miles on it when I got it and had been on a pallet shipped from CO to CA it sat ona pallet for about a year..... The point? These 5.0 are tough! The reason you go 5.0 is you don't HAVE TO DO ANYTHING to the engine, just get it in there and running....deal with the rest later!!

Melling makes a high volume pump for the explorer pan? $52 for high volume version on RA. What were you trying to stick in there? LMFAO
Just fyi the stock explorer oil pump IS high volume (compared to stock 5.0 of the past)

If you do take it apart, take your time getting the two half's back together it's a REAL PITA! I found out that holding the shift rod that gets turned by the motor really helps hold the stuff inside that likes to move around and not go back where it needs to.

It feels tight, I'm going to take the motor off and switch it to 4 low, if the play is normal I'm going to suck out any fluid that is in there, inspect it for flakes. If no flakes I'm going to replace the rear seal, get a gasket and slap it on. I'll fill it after driveshaft is installed.

I hear these take Mercon LV but don't know how much. Is there a better fluid for these and if you know how much they take...

Heck yes its like Christmas!
merc/dex or any other ATF
Not Mercon V, not Mercon LV, just plain old atf
I use mercon III because it is cheap and plentiful

4406 first year was 1997, mercon LV was not even out yet.
Ford started using "transfer case fluid" because the dealerships only carry Mercon V and later LV after 98-99 and you cannot run those fluids in a chain driven t case.
Motorcraft "transfer case fluid" is nothing more then Dextron/Mercon III

If I don't get an engine for the ex cab soon I'll just be driving the wife's car.

Not like I have to go to work or anything. :-)
