I know you said you were going to try VLogging some of this, and I like it. Unfortunately, now everyone on the forum will see the absolute, pathetic mess that is our suburbian garage! LOL It looks even worse on video! I think after you get the brakes, suspension and such finished, we should take a weekend and clean it back up and throw away a ton of junk!

yeah buddy! Videos are awesome
Now we have a face for the username

Garages are so hard to keep organized, its not really a garage its more like a processing center for everything that is to enter the house
I like to remain just a pair of hands, keep them guessing!!! LMFAO
but eventually we are getting setup to do videos also, just as long as they are still in a thread on a forum.
It is SOO much easier to get info from a thread then trying to remember what video and when the info was discussed LOL

Very well done, some of my best friends are gingers with their red beards :) Mine is starting to go grey!!
There are two things you can do with a red beard like that:
1. play hockey
2. Automotive repair videos

He's looking a bit scruffy at the moment. :P The plant we work at shut down for end of year on the 20th, so he has been working on his truck instead of keeping his facials trimmed! As for the "processing center", that truly is the case with this garage. However, we have let it go way too long and everything is in severe disarray. We also have a butt load of truck parts that need to go up to the attic (along with all the Christmas decor totes).

Ya know, it just occurred to me; hoarding truck parts and tools doesn't attract rats or roaches! :)

Lots of progress! That is always good! You are totally dominating this project dude!
Wishing I had as much time as you do to work on my poor truck. I have got so much to do to prep for this 5.0 swap.
The boyfriend and I both work so much. And the fact we are house shopping also does not help. Budget for truck parts have gone down unfortunately.

I love the videos man! I plan on dusting off my fancy $800 DSLR camera I bought for photography and using it to make YouTube videos. I think the internet might melt if I did videos because. Being a girl with a truck. Cue drooling (haha)

Thanks everyone, i'll keep filming then. Yeah, I didn't consider the background. When you see it every day, you kind of don't think about that. We should probably take a weekend this spring and clear some of it out, though. I don't think any house is immune to that though.

And yeah, I admit it. When all I do is go back and forth from home to my factory job and nowhere in between, I tend to slack on my appearance a bit.

I'm excited for a dedicated ranger channel. There have only been a handful that tackle the V8 swap. Surround your self with the parts, the trucks, or the focus of you vlog and it will be great.

While I'm dead in the water, I decided to do some thinking and figure out what to do in other areas.

First up, exhaust system. I knew it would be true dual with an x pipe, coming out the rear bumper. I decided to go with flowmaster super 10 mufflers, and torque monster headers.

Beyond that, I wasn't sure what to do. The stock system has a number of cats on it, and I have 02 sensors to deal with.

Well, after some thinking, I decided that there will be a total of zero cats used on my build. Indiana doesn't have any laws that prohibit me from doing this (that I'm aware of), so that should make things easier and flow nicer.

That said, that presents a problem. If I leave the 02 sensors as they are with no cats, I will get a CEL. Well, with some searching, it seems the first set are there only to help tune the fuel/air mixture. No cats won't bug those ones, so they'll hang around.

The second set is there to prove that the cats are working as they should. With no cats, these will give me that CEL. I'm going to try to use Forscan to turn them off, and if that doesn't work I'm aware of some devices out there that trick the computer into thinking all is well by it's standards. So, through one way or the other, that's the plan.

I considered killing the sensors entirely, but I want that first set for performance reasons.

Little note, I think I'll have the mufflers clamped on, not welded. Reason for that, is if I want to change them later, that will make it easy for me to do so.

Second thing, those pesky brake lines on that rear diff.

My intention was to use mustang soft lines and modify the ranger hard lines. That will work and do the job without fuss. But, it'll look way ugly and cobbled together, because this Ranger 8.8 has no means to mount the soft lines. That, and the hard portion of the soft lines has multiple bends. Needless to say, and to state the obvious, the Mustang is set up way different.

So, workable, but ugly. So, what does the explorer do? Best of both worlds, right? Well, sort of.

The explorer also uses soft lines from caliper to hard line, but the T block (frame to diff) is mounted off to the left side, just next to the caliper. This wouldn't be an issue if it didn't mean I'd have to reroute the frame hard line. I'd prefer to leave that alone.

That how-to I followed mentioned a soft line kit, seemingly just for this application. However, I still have to cut and reflare the ranger lines, on top of paying $40 for a pair of soft lines which seem to do nothing special. Not a fan of this idea.

Well, I came up with one other idea. Chrisfix added a set of dual calipers on his "driftstang" which happens to be in the same model year range as these calipers, 94-04.

To plumb the second set to his hydro ebrake, he used a set of stainless braided brake lines with a couple adapters to go from the AN3 fitting on the lines to the caliper banjo bolt.

Although I will need to use an adapter to go from the frame-to-diff soft line and then to the caliper, I won't have to bend and reflare lines. It will be one continuous line. It will cost the same as those other soft lines I mentioned before, but I believe it will be a better end product.

I plan to use Russell 641431 adapter for the caliper to AN3 fitting, and Russell 643961 for the other end of the deal. Fragola 310030 should work on both sides, 30" long. I have to double check my measurement, however.

If I'm not mistaken, the caliper banjo bolt threads are a Metric 10mm x 1.0 Inverted Flare, and the hard line fittings I hear are 3/8-24. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

That's all I got for now. I'm still working out the details on a few other things to come.

If you see something that I used and want to know where I got it, I'll be more than happy to drop part numbers, links, what-have-you. Just ask and you shall receive.

you wont get a cel

I have run many many 5.0 trucks with no or completely empty primary cat converters and no CEL from the catalyst monitors (downstream 02 sensors)

If you do get a cel for some strange reason you can use rear cheaters or tune the rear cat monitors out of the system

So you are adding a second set of calipers to the rear axle? Or did I miss something?
I usually buy a new piece of brake line from the auto parts store and bend it up for the 8.8 to go from side to side, they have them on the shelf.

Good to know about the 02 sensors. I'm curious to see what happens when the time comes.

I'm not adding dual calipers, I took inspiration from someone who did. I wanted to see how he hooked up the second set in his system, see if maybe I could apply that to my problem.

+1 on the downstream O2 sensors, I gutted a set of cats on a 3.0 and did not get lights. The cheaters are pretty cool, it just stands the sensor a little farther away from the stream. Ultimately you need them written out, I bet when it is time you can find someone here that knows someone.

V8 level II has some good info in his build about true duals and black06xlt has done true dual exhaust as well. Gas tank is a major obstacle for duals. Most end up exiting in front of the rear tire.

Off road trucks usually run to a single pipe, street trucks run duals.

Curious, what makes the gas tank an obstacle? Heat from the exhaust? Space constraints? If heat is a problem, I could fab up some steel heat shields.

Should probably go without saying, but there will be sections that can be undone for servicing later if necessary. Not sure where exactly, just that there will be joints that can be loosened.

What makes the tank an obstacle is that its literally in the way. That's why black06xlt ran both pipes down the passenger side. You'll also end up with one pipe longer than the other. Thats why some opt to dump them both in front the passenger rear tire.

Hmm. I may have to rethink where mine will dump. Originally, my plan was to have them dump before the rear tires, one on each side. I had abandoned that because I heard people having problems with the exhaust gases dulling their finish, and concerns of it degrading the tires.

what about outboard the frame? True duals might work if you find a way to go around the fuel tank :)
The transfer csae is 1" from the drivers frame rail and then the fuel tank is tucked up to the drivers frame rail and then there is 1=2" of clearance from fuel tank to rear d shaft....impossible to run exhaust down drivers side without re locating the mid ship fuel tank

You can dump in front of the tires just be aware, there is alot of heat and some soot that comes out of the tail pipes, that stuff will find its way all over anything that is aft the exhaust tip.... this is why a dump usually points at the ground

These are the reasons why I still prefer a single exhaust for a 4x4 ranger, less plumbing and for our power goals it just makes sense
Unless you are boosted, scavenging both banks together into a single tail pipe is a great way to retain some low end torque  (under 350hp = 2:1 for the win)

As far as sheer volume is concerned, 2 X 2.25" pipes don't have a lot more area than a 3" single. 2.25" has 3.97 square inches, 2.5" has 4.9 but jump to 3" you get 7.06.

I recently had my exhaust replaced. My original dual setup was 2.25" my new is 2.5". Stuck with the same 40 series flowmaster. The 2.25" setup seemed to sound better and the 2.5" seems to have hurt the pulling power a little. My guess is a decrease in back pressure

I have a 3" in 2 X 2.5" out on that used flowmaster 40 I bought. That's exactly how it is going to roll on the 5.0. Except for the direction, was going to exit in front of the right tire but will point it down or hump it over the axle per a thread I read here starring 410 himself LOL. If I ever finish it that is.

You know.....

Since i'm not running cats or the like and therfor those pesky sensors aren't really a big deal for me....

I *could* just have it go out the headers, short section of pipe, muffler, and dump behind the front tire.

(/joke)
