Here's the furniture. Looks nicely worn, no?

For whatever reason I was unable to get the link to work.

XMan on the 6.8forums.com wrote:   In a prior topic, it was posted that building an AR without checking head-space was inviting disaster. I have heard the other side of the coin many times that it wasn't necessary because components are built to specifications with tight tolerances. I share the later view and have shot rifles (not ARs) with significant headspace issues which only resulted in split brass. Regardless of your view point, I thought of a way to check my new-build AR's headspace with no tools. When my BCG came in today, I took the BCG apart. I placed a new piece of brass with a flush primer installed into the chamber, and inserted the bolt (don't use a case loaded with powder and a bullet to do this - only a primer). That told me I had enough headspace especially since I could do it by hand. Then I used the firing pin to measure the freeplay/headspace tolerance of the chamber by sliding the firing pin into the back of the bolt and letting it touch the brass. The plunger forces the brass forward into the shoulder leaving any freeplay at the bolt's face. The difference between the firing pin flush with the bolt face and with the brass in the chamber is your freeplay. You can actually see the difference in the gap between the flat on the ring stop of the firing pin and the back of the bolt. If there is no gap, you have too much headspace.

Rather ingenious, I say. I'll have to keep that in mind if I get tooled up for reloading.

SOOOOOoooooo... Although I couldn't get a shot of it with a camera..

I have a question beyond my own experience. Why would a "individual" wear a handgun grip facing opposite direction unless; and here is where my presumption comes into play...

On his left hip unless the means was to pull from across his body with his strong hand? and why if any does that make any sense to anyone?

That's about the only reason I could figure wearing a pistol in such a configuration.

The only context where this makes sense, to me, is in the application of a shoulder holster, where a right hand dominant shooter would have the pistol worn on his left.

I don't think they make a holster to do what you're describing, though.

From what it looked like.. was a right handed belt loop [almost MOLLE style] and it just looked.. Backwards!

There was too many people around to get a pic of him being 2 people back in line without looking odd or out of place on my own.

I was checking to even see if he just put his fuckin pants on backwards or not... lmao

With a cross-draw holster you can draw the gun while in a seated position much easier.

I have a cross draw rig for my SA 44mag. The main use of the 44 has become a hunting backup. With the cross-draw holster the 44 does not get in the way of my hunting knife on my right hip or get in the way of the my right side aiming with my rifle.

Just bought a chrome BCG from brownells. I wanted to wait and get the upper first, but when I saw that BCG was 50 bucks off I was like "Hell yeah!" and bought it. Right now I'm like 80 bucks short of the upper, so I don't know if I'll be able to get one this December before they all fly off the shelves.

I ordered 3500 9mm 124gr coated RN bullts for reloading from Bayou Bullets. I just got notified that they shipped today and I will have them Thursday. They also gave me another discount code good for today only for additional $$ off if I place another order, I need some 45's also...

Well my black friday furniture came in today, finally. The stock slid right on and so did the pistol grip, but with a couple of hiccups.
First off, I couldn't get the screw through the grip. The reason here being that a layer of flash was covering the hole. A punch got rid of it with no hammer required, thankfully.

Second, at first I thought they forgot the screw that comes with the stock. This is an A1 stock so the screw is much shorter to allow the buffer and thus the BCG to come all the way back. I felt a bit like a moron later after it came stumbling out of the bag the stock was in (inside the box).

Other than those two things though, everything came as you'd expect it to and the parts fit wonderfully.

That being said though, I found one downside to this wide jaw bench vise. If you don't position the bench block just right, the upper can swing down and the hand guards can ram against the corners on the jaws, marking them up rather deeply, which just happened to my poor Windham. Not a big deal, I suppose, but it still sucks no less.
At some point I'll probably get a smaller bench vise or something to bolt onto the small mobile desk in my office where the guns and tools are kept so I can do minor work like that up here and also avoid that from happening again.

So, learn from my mistake at no cost to you.

Yeah, it's a bummer, but not a big deal. Lesson learned. If that's the worst mistake I ever make, then I'm in pretty good shape, I say.

Curious, why are a few of your guns muzzle down instead of stock down?

Oil doesn't mix well with wood.

Hmm, odd. I've cleaned a couple of rifles numerous times and wipe their stocks down with some oil on a rag. Keeps them looking good and clean.

Adding oil to a stock is the equivalent (visually) of adding glass to a picture frame, it's why wetting dry wood makes it look dark and rich.

Now if the stock is oiled, it should only be oiled with the oil it was oiled with (catch my drift? ;) )
Balistol is supposed to be ok on wood, but it's not a good idea for regular gun oil as it just causes the wood to expand etc etc.

I think you are referring to UNFINISHED wood, correct?

Essentially, I mean killed wood with no clear coat would have the same issue.

If it was sealed like my Winchester, I wouldn't use oil on it anyway.

Okay, just wanted to see if we were on the same page. The guns Cameron is referring to have custom finished furniture. Multiple coats of hand-rubbed polyurethane. These guns are from the 1960's and have been handled and cared for in the same way their entire lives with no ill effects. I can see where unsealed furniture would react differently to the oils.

Yeah, different kettle of fish for sure.

I still wouldn't use oil tbh, but that's a personal preference, remember oil is a carcinogen and those parts are in contact with your hands and face.
