We have combat arms guys in my unit and I could probably fire whenever they had a class if I wanted to. We are allotted ammo per month for proficiency fire and quarterly for qualification. That's just for the M4 and M9 though.

The CPEC guys get to fire the Remington 700 (.308) and some of the Security Forces guys get the M249 (5.56) and M240B (7.62).

I always let Uncle Sugar pay for my ammo when I could.

There was one time I bolo'd my annual M-16 qual and shot at one of my co-workers target. She missed as usual. She ended up qualifying as expert for the first time is 18 years. I had to shoot again the next day, expert again.

The wife wanted me out of the house - I headed for the range. I had some new bullets that on the last trip I had determined an accurate load but when I was testing the batteries in my chronograph were dead.  I needed to know how fast I was pushing them.

These are Hi-tek coated round nose 124gr 9mm lead bullets from Bayou Bullets. My load in near the bottom of the powder manufacturer's recommended load range for plated bullets - they have no data for poly coated lead so this is a guessing game. I compare my fps against the published range for min to max loads fps. I am about 16 fps faster than the lowest recommended load for plated 124gr RN. They are averaging 1056 fps and have a very light recoil with my Colt Govt 1911.

This is right what I was hoping for. I am using a pistol vice w/ a laser sight and I am getting a 1.7" spread at 20 yards. I shoot better right handed and keep this load within a 4" circle at that distance. A two-handed grip it spreads to a 5" circle. It was a good day. Now to load up the remaining 3400 bullets.

IMI runs a little hot. Those 115 should bloom well in ballistic gel.

Congratulations on the 92. Also keep up with the round count. When you get to 15K it will be time to re-spring and replace the locking block.

You should be able to pick up mil surplus magazines in the $15 range. You can also PM me to for a link to get after-market mags. (I couldn't get the URL to display).

Appreciate the offer t-square, but I think three is plenty for me atm.

I should probably make an excel sheet to help keep track of that kind of thing. Might be useful with the shooting I plan on doing.

Thanks for the congrats, all. It really is a fine piece of Italian hardware. She need a couple things before I'm ready to slot this into a holster, though. I think I'll call her.... Night Wolf. Yeah, let's go with that.

I've got three 17 shot magazines total (two of which I can only load 16 into at the moment due to brand new springs), so I'd say I'm covered there.

The pistol is brand new, so it needs to be broken in, if for no other reason than I need to see it working. I'd like to get 300-500 rounds through it. Any issues will be corrected if they arise (which I doubt any will, but you never know)

Second, this needs a couple modifications to make it more carry-friendly. I plan on installing a G-kit to turn the safety-decocker into a decocker only. I can't reach it real well without breaking my grip, and I can see myself accidentally tripping it when doing slide manipulations. Second mod it's getting is a set of tritium night sights. It's not real often I go out at night, but when I do it is absolutely pitch black. I'm not one for cheating, but when I'm dealing with my life, I'm going to cheat and get every advantage I legally can. I *might* install an extended slide release, but that's a maybe. My hands aren't real big and I'm still getting used to wrangling this beast of a 9mm.

Another thing I need to do is get some hollowpoints and test 'em. I may have mentioned it before, but given how valuable the article is, I figure it can't hurt to potentially repeat myself. Lucky Gunner tested over 100 different defense ammunition types which is totally handy and saves me a lot of money. I picked out the ones I liked the most and over the next couple months I'm going to make notes of who has what and for how much, then get whatever is cheapest out of the eight I wound up with. I could order online, but for small quantities (relativity speaking) I don't believe I would save anything by buying online.

Article: https://www.luckygunner.com/labs/self-defense-ammo-ballistic-tests/

I picked out the following eight, based on penetration and expansion characteristics. I'm aiming for half to the full 18" spec from the FBI, along with very good to excellent expansion. These caught my eye big time. They're all 9mm.

1. Corbon 115GR DPX
2. Corbon 115GR JHP +P
3. Federal 124GR HST (can be found in both +P and normal pressures)
4. Federal 150GR Micro HST (micro perhaps meaning for very small 9mm handguns?)
5. Hornady 115GR FTX Critical Defense
6. Magtech 115GR Guardian Gold +P
7. Speer 115GR Gold Dot
8. Sig Sauer 124GR V Crown

I also whipped up a spreadsheet to help keep track of this. I added a division formula to each set of cells to find price per round, mostly because I'm lazy and I don't like math.

The last thing I need is a holster. With my 1911 I found out there are quite a few disadvantages with the traditional right-hip holster, the fault being more of how I live my life vs the actual style itself. I do a lot of sitting, whether it's driving, on the couch, or here at my computer.

Especially while driving, this makes the pistol hard to get to. This also makes every zip-up jacket a complete and total liability, making it substantially difficult to get to my pistol. If I sit down on the floor, the muzzle of my pistol taps the floor, potentially damaging the gun and the floor.

I'm giving serious thought to moving to a shoulder holster rig, such as that from Tagua. I really like my 1911 holster from them, so I'm willing to give theirs a try. This would allow me to at least partially close my jackets in the winter, still let me access the pistol when sitting and not damage either the pistol or the floor when sitting on a hard surface. This also means I don't have to shell out for a true gun belt either, where as if I choose a hip-holster I have got to get a proper gun belt.

I haven't decided if I want to shell out for a weapon light, yet. I'd probably wind up with a streamlight TLR-1. A lot of people like 'em and it looks good on the pistol too. Of course that means a custom holster, or just carrying the light separately and attach when needed, which I'm also open to doing. I'm not entirely sure if the $124 is worth it considering I already carry a flashlight with me (love this little thing), and the fact I go out at night (in public) less than 10 times a year. Then again, bad things happen at home too, so there's that to consider.

Needless to say, much to think about.

On a whole 'nother note, Project Vietnam is one part away from being done. I ordered the barrel assembly and got $20 off. All I need now is the upper. They say they're planning on ramping up production to full scale in 2018, so it should be easier to get one. Once that last part is in my hands this baby can finally be put together and shot.

Budget wise, (assuming I pay full price for the upper) it'll come out to ~769, compared to ~952 MSRP. ~183 below budget. Not bad, I dare say. Of course that doesn't include the tools I bought, but still.

Try 115gr, 124gr, 135gr,and 147gr target ammo during the brake-in. You will probably find the 124gr and 135gr will work a bit better than the 115 and 147. The 124 and 115 will be the least expensive. All the bullets you mentioned are good SD rounds but I find 115gr to have more recoil and it takes longer to get back on target.

I lean toward Federal for the SD rounds. They were the ground breakers in bullet expansion with their Hydra-shok 30 years ago and have kept at the leading edge with bullet technology.

Also look at a couple of different holsters. I have a Fugly IWB from Dragon Leatherworks as my primary daily carry (I carry a Glock G37 45GAP). I also have the Uncle Mike shoulder holster that sees some use in the winter months and a Bianchi OWB that sees a lot of use in cooler months as well.

Crappy rainy weather here. I was planning to hit the range with my son this week, not sure if that'll happen now.

Does anyone know of a company that makes a good holster (hip or shoulder style) for a Beretta 92A1 that accommodate a TLR-1 weaponlight?

Safariland makes a hip style in leather and Black Point Tactical makes a hip holster in kydex, both for around $88 each.

I'm leaning towards wanting to go the shoulder holster route, but it wouldn't surprise me if I had both on hand.

I know Aliengear will make a great holster, but you'd have to ask them if they had the weaponlight addition.

Give Dennis at Dragon Leatherworks  a call. He made the holster that is used by Pride (main character) on NCIS New Orleans.

I wear his Fugly with my daily carry.

I'll give them a look. One thing that crossed my mind was if it was feasable to take a hip holster and somehow attach it to a shoulder holster harness, effectively making it a shoulder holster.

I haven't heard back from Dragon leatherworks yet, but one place is wanting 260 plus shipping to meet that need. Yikes.

I'm going to try to find a universal holster that's big enough or perhaps something USGI. Failing all that, I can always suck it up and go hip-holster. It's not that big of a deal, I just have to change the way I do a couple things, like perhaps kneel instead of sit.

Try CooksHolsters.com and InsaneKydexCreations.com.

I have a Cook's for my EDC but I have read a lot about IKC, they make some nice stuff and can add a specific light to almost anything, a little pricey though.

Well, after a ton of looking and a good bit of thinking, I think I'm going to ditch the tlr-1 idea, at least for EDC. Now I might consider stuffing it in a pocket or spare ammo pouch slot (assuming it's quick attach/detach), but I don't think it's worth the money to do what I'm thinking.

$100(at the cheapest) for the TLR-1
I haven't gotten any figures from other holster manufacturers, but I'll ballpark it at around $300 for something custom, so before shipping I've spent $400 just for that.

"How much is your life worth to you?" Only goes so far. Considering how little of the time I'm actually in the dark, how limited a weapon light's use is, and the overall likelihood of something happening in the first place..... Yeah, for that kind of money, it doesn't seem at all worth it to me. That $400 I think would be better spent on ~2,000 rounds of ammo to practice with.

That being said, I still have to decide shoulder vs hip holster, now that I actually have both options to choose from.

For now though, with a bit of rummaging, I found a holster that fits the Beretta very well, despite it not being fitted for the 92A1; a crossfire elite.

It's actually remarkably difficult to find a holster for a Beretta pistol in general if you have any 92 other than the good ol' 92FS. 90-two, m9a1, 92a1, etc, and some places have the same option listed twice. From what I read, a 90-two and a 92a1 will share holsters, but a m9a1 will use a holster unique to it, due to the dimensions of the slide; apparently.

So, as much as I love fitted holsters, I think a snuggly fitting nylon holster will be what I go with in either configuration. If I do spring for fitted, it's getting test-fitted before I lay down the cash.

Welp, all I need now is the g-kit, a set of tritium sights, and a wilson combat short reach trigger.

Good luck with your defence (should you need to defend yourself) with a mod'd trigger.

The nose is a little different with the A1 due to the rail, also, your nylon unfitted holster will sand off all your finish/edges.

http://aliengearholsters.com/alien-gear-cloak-tuck-3-0-iwb-holster-inside-the-waistband.html

This is what i use, in 3 years carrying the XDS9, nothing has worn off it. You'll notice they have a M9A1 option, and remember it's not Kydex, it's another material which i think lends itself to not wearing your finish as much.

I won't be modifying the trigger pull, which seems to be the 'hot water' topic of that. I'm only making the trigger itself closer towards the rear, allowing me to grasp it better. The action is left unaltered.

Now mods like the "You're f****d!" "Smile, wait for flash!" engravings, grim reaper grips, etc, I have heard of people getting into some hot water over. Weak point? Yeah, definitely, but brought up no less.

It does suck that holsters wears the finish off a pistol, but I found that my leather fitted holster did just that to my 1911. It bothered me at first, but I take general finish wear as kind of a milestone. It shows that I use it, and a worn firearm has character to it.

besides, if nothing else, it's a good excuse to get it refinished at some point.

That's the exact holster I have, over 3 years and no wear on the smith 9c. Goes in and comes out once a day about 350 days a year. Gotta love the price. I'm ready for a new one, I'll buy the same thing.

I have a few drop leg holsters for the Beretta M9 (issued). I think one is Safariland and the other is Blackhawk. Sage green and black, respectively.

Some leather holster's still offer a basic fit for your frame size, then have the backstrap to keep the weapon seated properly. Not a perfect fit but they usually get the job done.

I do love Kydex holsters though. The "click" when installed is a plus, lets me know it's in where it needs to be. They usually leave a slight line on your gun though where the pinch point slides across the thicker areas. Leather is probably more comfy to wear, especially IWB.

Figured it might be worth showing what I've got to work with atm. If you're curious what the rings are for, it's for a shoulder strap, which (for some reason) goes *across* your chest and on your right shoulder so the pistol hangs on your left side. I'm using the strap elsewhere. It has slots on both sides for a belt to slide through. Also note how you can't see the 92's rear sight when it's inserted.
