Hey!  Black guns matter!

My preference is brushed stainless. If it gets scratched it can be buffed out. Or if you want a pimp gun it can be polished.

Range day. I nailed down my 357 Mag Hydroshok load. I also met a guy who had some unusual guns that he let me shoot. The first was a Coonan 1911 in .357 Mag. It was a handful as it had a long grip. The kick was a little more than my S&W model 65 357mag. I also got to shoot his 357 Auto Mag. This was the first 357 Auto Mag I had ever seen. The gun was originally a 44 Auto Mag that was re-barreled to 357 when the 44 barrel wore out. It shot like a hot 10mm. I wouldn't want to shoot it on a regular basis. The 357 uses the same shell as the 44 Auto mag but it is necked down to 357.

Not counting the Coonan 357 and the Auto Mag 357 I shot 66 .357Mag, 99 45GAP, and 103 9mm. The 99 GAP is 10 mags loaded with 9 rounds. The 9mm in 4 mags of 10 rounds and 6 mags of 9 rounds. I usually arrive with the 9 and 45 loaded up and it takes just under an hour as this is my standard range trip.  The 357 is not going to be a regular at the range as it is destined to be the "truck gun".

Sounds like an expensive trip to the range!

The 66 357 cost: Primer 2.57 cents, powder 1.76 cents, JHP 17.8 cents for 22.13 cent per round or $14.61
The 99 rounds of 45GAP: Primer 2.57 cents, powder 1.4 cents, SWC 7.8 cents for 11.77 per round or $11.66
The 103 rounds of 9mm: Primer 2.57 cents, powder .9 cents, cRN 5.9 cents for 9.37 cents per round or $9.65

I buy in bulk. Just under $36 for an hour and a half of shooting. $30 a year for hunting license to use DNR range (36-40 trips per year). It takes 4 gallons of gas round trip in the Ranger  or 1 & 3/4 on the Electraglide.  I shoot the 45GAP and 9mm almost every time unless I have something special to shoot. Over Christmas break I used my AR-9 to burn through 500 rounds of 9mm of mouse fart 120gr lead RN that no longer worked in the 92 INOX after a stock re-spring. I had developed that load about half way through the spring life and it would no longer cycle the 92 but it worked in the AR-9. That ammo was cheeper as I spent an afternoon helping a buddy cast 1200 bullets. I only had 3.47 cents per round tied up in it.

This does not factor in the cleaning supplies that cost about $20 every 25-30k rounds. All the brass is ammo I purchased and shot, state patrol range pickup (45 GAP - free), or part of a 5 gallon bucket of brass a buddy gave me as he had save brass for over 40 years with the intention of getting into reloading but never did. I grew up with my dad and uncles that reloaded. A good friend in high School's dad was the QA at Hercules Powder in Brunswick GA so I also learned some loading techniques from him.

If you burn enough of it, it seriously pays off to reload the bigger calibers!

Cowboy calibers are where you can shoot on the cheap if you have a free supply of lead for casting. My brother-in-law has all of my dad's molds. About once a year we will set up and produce a couple thousand .355, .451, and .308. I am going to add .357 the next time we do this. The secret to shooting lead is medium  or slow burn powder and keeping the velocity at 1100 fps or less.

My BIL shoot 300 Blackout. He takes the lead and coats them with a polymer that is more effective than copper jackets in preventing lead build up. He has used them in sub-sonic and high speed rounds. I have used the coating on .355 round nose 120 grain bullets for my 9mm and 200gr semi-wad cutter 45 slugs.

Casting gets the cost down to less than 4 cents a round.

Obviously, I don't know much about reloading, but based on what you have said, the projectile is where the main cost is; correct?

Yes the projectile is the expensive part. I just finished pressing out all of my 357 Magnum cases with 158gr HydraShok projectiles. I only have about 170 cases so they are all loaded to what Federal considers the optimum speed for maximum expansion. I have just over 22 cents per round tied up in these. My plinking/target loads are about 10 cents per round and they are hot 38+P rounds in 38 Special cases. I have about two and a half gallons of 38Spl brass.

On another note, besides toilet paper finding ammo or guns in stock is getting a bit difficult. Prices on used guns are also way up. I have a Glock 26, Baby Glock, 9mm I put on Armslist yesterday. I had it priced about where the other listings of G26's and got a hit in less than 4 hours. I have had this gun for 6 years and shot about 400 rounds through it. I can't hit anything 20 feet with any consistency so it was basically a belly gun too be used up close.  It doesn't take much more to carry my full size G37 that I can get all 10 shots in a 4 inch circle at 25 yards.

Was out Plinking with a 22 caliber Pellet Rifle.
Surprisingly actuate.
There were a lot of Ground Squirrels in the back yard tonight, got the Pellet Rifle out went up on upper patio, loaded some Hollow Points Pellets and they all went away... funny how they knew.
I walked to the other side of the patio and all the Quail took off like a shot.

In the end I got to try out the Pellet Rifle again, it is fun to shoot, I could pick off pieces of wood but never got to shoot at the Squirrels !

Ammo shelves were empty last two weekends in our city.  Target Sports USA has a shipping delay along with increased pricing across the board because "manufacturers are raising their prices".  Here comes the gouging.  Funny how everything is more expensive now with the COVID-19 thing EXCEPT gasoline.  Right now, about 10 miles from my home, you can buy regular for $1.04.  Too bad so many people are now out of work, so can't buy it... or maybe just don't need it.

Gas, I thought $2.49 was good !

Ammo, my stock pile is maybe little larger than normal, but what is NORMAL !
I buy almost every time my local guy has a sale, he saves certain things for me, I use a 40 grain .223, muzzle velocity around 3700 ft per sec. not always available and I don't want to have them made for me so I buy them up too !

Prices... why... like Toilet Paper can't figure people out, I'm guessing GREED, the mother of all problems.

Well, you're in California, so everything is more expensive.  $2.49 in Cali is pretty darn good!

GREED... yeah, plenty of that in this country.

Just found this thread, and I want to participate!

My first handgun, I got it last August after wanting it for a few years. It's a 9mm Walther PPQ M2 with a 5" barrel:

Next up is my Llama III-A. Chambered in 380, it's a 7/8ths scale 1911 made in 1949 (if the date code is right) and most importantly to me, it was my grandpas gun. Has almost no wear for how old it is, and is one of the most fun guns I've ever shot:

And here are both guns together freshly cleaned:

Next, I am looking at possibly the Sig P365 as a carry gun, but since I'm a lefty, I'm on the fence about it not being fully ambidextrous. But I eventually want to build an AR, as I am more of a rifle person than a handgun one.

I have a 365 what would you like to know?

Dang looks like you are right, seems to be a spot to switch the mag dropper but the other stuff is on the left. I don't see it being an issue how often do you really want to release the slide?

Kaelel, check out moriartiarmaments.com/left-hand-assemblies-and-parts  for a lefty receiver and bolt group.  I built a 6.8SPC carbine for my neighbor's son last summer (I mostly supervised).  He had $1100 tied up in it without optics. It sounds a little pricey but he had top of the line everything.

Nice pair of handguns, Keegan!  I love my CZ P-07 9x19.  It is ambi except for the slide release.  I actually swapped the mag release to the right side of the pistol because my stubby thumb couldn't reach it with it on the left.

There's a lot I want to know, but most of it has been cleared up by online reviews thankfully. Like any gun I'd consider, I want to know how it fits / feels in my hands, and how easily I'm able to manipulate it. Since it would be my concealed carry, I also would like to see the size of it in person, to see how concealable it would be on me (as I am skinny and having so much as a wallet in my pocket makes a noticeable bulge sometimes).

Since it's a mostly right-handed gun, I want to see how I feel about the slide release position. Whether I rack the slide or push the slide stop is usually 50/50, just whatever I feel like doing in that moment. I guess I don't really need to have an ambidextrous slide stop, but it's nice to have options, right? Maybe it fits in my hand just right that I don't even need to worry about it, like my Llama - even though its strictly a right handers gun, I can easily use every function with my pointer finger or thumb.

I know a lot of this is overthinking things, and most of that is brought up by never firing one and only going off of what fits me best by on paper stats, but I just want to make sure the firearm I decide to protect myself with is one suited well for me.

That's actually one of my bookmarked pages for when I am ready to start my build. What I am really liking though at the moment is F-1 Firearms and the skeletonized left handed parts they sell. Pricey, but high quality, light, and good looking.

I'd be looking at something like this but with a skeleton grip, different trigger, and possibly have the body dipped/anodized:

I've heard lots of various things about CZ, both good and bad, I aim to shoot one someday to see how I like their brand myself, but unfortunately all my friends go after S&W, Springfield, Walther, or an AR-15 variant.

You reminded me of a funny story... With my PPQ, the first time I took it shooting with a friend, I didn't think to mention the mag release was swapped over, and since they are right handed, when they went to swap mags, I got the best confused face I've ever seen in my life. (Maybe it isn't as funny a story as I thought)

LOL Couldn't find the release, eh? :-)  You probably would have no issue shooting my P-07.  As you mentioned, a lot about the "right" gun is how it feels in your hand.  I fell in love with this handgun as soon as I wrapped my hand around it.  I've never had an FTE or FTF with this gun... very reliable and also easy to conceal.  Indiana doesn't require concealed, but I do simply to avoid freaking out the people that are scared of guns.

Kealel, we didn't go the skeltonized route but did the charging handle delete, milled off the dust cover hinges/latch, opened up the ejection port, and milled in a side charge channel. There are very few 6.8SPC, flat-top, Lefty, side-chargers out there. Everything else was minimalist except for the 4.5x14-50 Leupold scope.

Did a range day. I was the only person on the pistol range and I got to do some drills. I shot 120 45GAP rounds. Fist drill was with 3 9-round mags of draw, charge, shooting for hearts and mind. I did a couple single handed double taps and both two handed and one handed mag dumps. While I was policing the GAP brass the RO came out and told me that if it was anybody else they would have stopped me when I was doing my drawing drills.  I also shot 103 rounds (4 10-round mags and 7 9-round mags) of 9mm in the 1911. The ammo I was shooting in the 1911 was some of my competition ammo that is loaded at the top end for the power factor. After the 45Gap the 9mm felt like mouse fart loads.

So found out 1/3rd of my department was laid off between yesterday and today, after I got off work, went out to the desert for some percussive therapy.

So, were you in that 1/3 that were laid off?  Hope not.  That percussive therapy will cure what ails you!  What caliber is the orange hammer? ;-)

So, were you in that 1/3 that were laid off?  Hope not.  That percussive therapy will cure what ails you!  What caliber is the orange hammer? ;-)
No, I survived the lay offs, but that means more work for me, and who knows what will happen in another couple of weeks.

Being a dead blow hammer, I think it's filled with #3 bird shot. (I used it to set up my steel targets, get them in the ground).

Well, I've been on both sides of that coin back in the recession.  The extra work load you take on when co-workers disappear can be overwhelming.  However, it's better than the alternative.  Best of luck to you in the coming weeks/months!

Thanks. Yeah I for sure would rather take a bit more work than be scrambling to find work. we are a single income family, so it would put us in a world of hurt.

I worked 3 hours today and then spent the rest of the afternoon in the gun room. It had been a while since I took my loading press apart and cleaned it. That is about an hour job but I took some of the rough aluminum pieces to the workshop and polished them on the buffing wheel. My primer feed was a bit gummy so the cleaning came just in time.  After I had it cleaned up I set it up for 9mm where I pressed out about 300 rounds of plated 124gr Round Nose bullets that should travel about 1100fps. Of those I pressed out I loaded up 103 (all the magazine space I have) of the 9mm and I have 7 magazines of 45GAP that I need to test on my next range day.

For the past year I have just grabbed the first thing available ammo wise when I was headed towards the range. I only shoot the 45GAP when I am sure I can recover all of my brass. I only get to shoot it about every other time I go. The 357 is easy to maintain control of the spent brass. For 9mm it doesn't really matter. I have 4 gallons of cleaned and sorted 9mm brass. About 2/3rd's of it is quality brass and the other third can be reloaded two or three times before it starts giving me problems. I keep about 100 rounds of this less desirable ammo in case I run into a Brass Hound at the range. A Brass Hound is somebody that sweeps up their brass and any other brass they can get their hands on. They can be a nuisance if you are shooting hard to find calibers like 45GAP, 10mm, or 357Sig.
Now I am just waiting for the ideal range day.

Edit was for a space between paragraphs - I though that was fixed.
