They are not the same - whisky is scottish (Scotch Whisky) and whiskey is Irish / American ( e.g. Bourbon Whiskey)

I am more of a rum & brandy drinker but when it comes to whisky it has to be a single malt scotch whisky for me preferably with a tiny drop of water to bring out the flavour.

I prefer Scotch and then Irish whiskey. Most of the American whiskeys are palatable (I will take Jim Beam over Gentleman Jack)  but I would prefer the New Zealand or Welsh whiskys that I have had in the past.

Almost, most Scotch is Whisky but there are a few distilleries that label blends as Whiskey.  There is also Australian whisky, Canadian whisky, English whisky, Finnish whisky, French Whisky, German whisky, Indian whisky, Japanese whisky, New Zealand whisky, South African whisky, and Welsh whisky. The Irish is Whiskey and most American distillers have whiskey but some of the craft distilleries have whisky.

That is the basic rundown. FYI, the entire world would be speaking Gaelic if the Irish had not figured out how to distill spirits.

Light -> socket adaptor for scale - Chris, the screw in part is the same size as "our" light bulbs.

"How the hell did they break the screw? I've usually seen the whole body crack before the screw gives."

Exactly my question to the guys. How did you break the screw???!!! Their answer: "This vice has been through a lot. Just shop wear."

They went out an got some Chinese made vice instead of spending $200 on a new screw from Wilton. I just shook my head in disappointment. Idiot manager.

The shop just gave me their broken Wilton 9300. The screw is cracked in half. Does anyone have an opinion on having it welded instead of replacing the screw at a cost of $200?

Record vices were made by C & J Hampton in Sheffield, UK from 1909 - 1972 when it merged with William Ridgway Ltd. to form Record-Ridgway Tools Ltd.

AB Bahco (Sweden) bought them out in 1981 and then in the 1998 they became a division of American Tool Companies Inc.

American Tool Companies Inc. became Irwin Tools in 2002 and is now owned by Black & Decker.

Mine is a genuine, Sheffield made Record from  1970 :)

Welding may destroy any hardening of the screw, so even if it was successfully welded it may need rehardening as well.

I am a great fan of mending broken stuff - other possibilities are to drill out the centre of the screw in both halves then tap the holes to take a piece of studding, using thread locker to secure the studding or cross drilling for pins to lock it up.

Or take the screw to a machine shop to make a new one shouldn't take someone I know very long to whizz one up on a CNC machine ......
