Long story short I lost control on black ice and rolled my prized ranger into a ditch. The truck had belonged to my father and he lost a battle with stomach cancer and left the truck to me.
Talk about suck. I just put a new box on it this past summer. It had 125,000 on the engine and was in great shape. I knew every inch of that rig. Had a lot of time and money into it.
Stupid thing was that i was only going 40mph, had just switched into 4 wheel drive and the front wheels grabbed black ice, I was off the gas but when those wheels caught it just spun the back end around and flipped into into ditch.
There is no excuse. It was my responsibility. Thankfully no one was hurt and only vehicle was involved.
Insurance company totaled it out. If I had the time and space I know i could get it running again. The roof was collapsed, mirrors gone, windows gone. Dented tailgate and rear bumper. But the box looked great lol. Actually the whole thing didn't look that bad to my eyes. But because of its age - it wouldn't be financially feasible for me to fix it. Sitting there amongst the other wrecks I know if i put a new battery in it it would fire but that was probably just wishful thinking
So there it is. Insurance company offered me $4,500 i am contesting.
Stinks the new Rangers don't come out until 2018 lol

Wow, I am sorry for your loss, losing your Dad, then the truck you two cherished, it must be hard !

I know you have heard it already but it is only a truck and the memory of your Dad is in your heart and soul, nothing can take that away.

OK, enough of that... do you have any pictures ?

As to the NEW RANGER... ( trumpets blaring )  don't rush in to purchase the new Ranger.  It will probably do well on the street, it is a car/truck after all, wait and see what they can do for real, how the Gas Milage ends up to be, will it work off road ?   Ford is cramming this THING down our throats... Stop, Look, and Listen !

Sorry for your losses young man.. the good news is your truck is replaceable, and to what degree minor/major accident be had, you sir are not replaceable and I think to speak for many if not all that there are friends and loved ones thankful that you were kept safe.

Just to interject a comment here. The Aussies are known to "poke fun" of what we consider "performanced" based vehicles due to some restrictions they do not have over ours being held back and de-tuned.

That being said, those unwilling or incapable of shedding $100k + on the Land Cruiser of your choice - The "New" but older 2011-2018 T6 Ranger the world received and the US did not is in fact a rather and highly capable platform despite the subtle differences in aesthetic arguments between whats marketing strong here in the US vs functional and important to the rest of the world who uses a truck for and as truck and not a topless station wagon.. Some may disagree with that last statement but we all can admit, we see it everyday. Pull into any major shopping center or super market in any town USA.. you'll see what I mean.

The Toyota Hilux and the T6 based World Ranger from Ford are the two largest sought after rivals on at least 3 if not 4 continents. Especially down under and to the right, our Kiwi friends.

I myself mostly agree in not applying haste to a new platform but i think the bugs we will see will only be due to changes for N.A. DOT laws and regulations. Should be a short run of issues, we all know there will be some. But give the truck a chance, drive it, even if you aren't in the market.. I think you might be surprised if somewhat not impressed.

Its a creative and well to do platform that's already proved itself on the world stage, its only task to complete is becoming accepted here in North America for what it is, not what it isnt yet.

Rick: First of all, I too am glad you didn't get hurt and convey my sincere condolences. It makes it doubly hard to lose a cherished vehicle that your late father passed on to you. It is true, you could probably revive it with time and money. You didn't say what model year it was, so I'm curious. And I would like to see some pics also!

Keep your chin up, you are among friends here. :)

Sorry to hear about that.  At least you are ok.  My son crashed my '98 after I gave it to him just over a year ago.  He is still salty about it, but in the end it kept him safe, the best thing I could aks for from it.

That sucks man. I'm sorry about your dad. My father was just diagnosed with brain cancer in December, it's like the floor came out from under us. But you aren't hurt. Which is what matters. The truck is just a material thing so remember your dad rather than having the truck remind you of your dad type of deal.

He was probably looking out for ya from above!

Unless the truck is twisted, that really isn't too hard to fix.

thank you everyone for your kind thoughts - i am thankful that neither my wife or i sustained serious injury.
and it stinks to say good by to the old truck
all sentimentality aside the truck had its own issues that one day would have left me stranded or broke:
- 4.0 V6 with the timing chain rattle - not only at start up but at 2,500-3,000 RPM - i kept it quiet with mobil one full synthetic and lucas full synthetic oil treatment
- rust, rust and more rust - while i had the box off i power washed and painted the frame - but in the last 6 years - every time i crawled under that truck i came out covered in rust - no lie. both pocket doors had rust - the right was shot. i purchased a replacement but didn't have the chance to install it.
every summer i spent two to three weeks on rust repair and touch up - PIA
every year something new would rust off the truck
- it was pig on gas - for such a small light truck you would think it would get better mileage than a full size. nope. i kept up the maintenance on the 4.0 but it was a pig
...but it was a strong truck and if it hadn't been for the roll over i would have kept it on the road for another 5 years

Rust is a common thing on the Ranger, as Ford chose to NOT paint parts that didn't show. Sounds like you are making peace with letting it go. Probably the best with the issues you mentioned.

it was cool while it lasted and i learned a lot from the experience.
most notable is that i learned i install leaf springs by myself LMAO

That would be worth stashing at a friends house and if nothing else, stripped for parts as a donor vehicle... minimal efforts and time to be profitable for your time at least.

just a thought.
