Well ladies and gentlemen, it's been a sad time these last couple months. Lola has been down and out for a while now. Yall may remember when I was having that electrical issue with the tach, speedo, odometer and temp guage shutting off while driving, and then not starting? Well, after a trip to the junkyard for an alternator and a battery test, here she still sits, sad and lonely. I've contemplated taking her under the knife at the nearest shop to me that does great work (all the others are mediocre and charge way too much for crap work) and getting her diagnosed, but yall also may remember that while she's like this the computer sends no input to an OBD2 reader to pull codes, so they'd have to spend time (and my money) picking the brain of this wonderful truck. BUT, the main problem I see there is that for them to put a starter and change the oil in my grandmother's 2000 Chevy Silverado, they charged $600. That price may seem reasonable, I'm not sure I've never taken anything to the shop except for inspections, tires, and alignments, but those are simple jobs and the diagnosis of my truck probably isn't "simple". I've been under, over, inside, outside, and through the entire truck and cant find anything that doesnt look right. I'm torn on the decision to buy a new alternator and battery so I know for a FACT that both of those are good, and if that doesnt fix it possibly take it to Ford and have then run some sort of test or refresh the computer, since I've gotta be there anyways for the airbag replacement. If they cant figure it out, it may be time to let her go....

Check your cigarette lighter fuse. If that fuse is bad you wont have power at the obd2 port. Your gauge issue might be as simple as a bad cluster. If the cluster is bad Jamman has several laying around

What fuse could that be? I've checked all fuses but it's possible I've overlooked one in my frustration. Are there any other signs of a bad cluster? The gas guage works still even after everything shuts off, and when everything shuts off the check engine light comes on.

From the video I just watched I'm now thinking its locked out? Did you by chance have a new key made? I just tried this with my truck and my lock light doesnt flash it stays on. You could have a bad key or key reader. This a game changer here. Someone chime in on this yo help velociranger. But yea I'm thinking your key is bad. If you have another key try it.

I don't have another key, but this is the same key I've been using for years now. I read in the owner's manual that you should keep heavy metal objects and electrical devices away from the key while trying to start it, and of it doesnt start then remove key from key ring for a few moments and start it that way. It didnt work either. But what you're saying does make sense, that it could be the key and that the anti theft system has shut the entire truck down because it doesn't recognize the key. Anyone know how much it would be to get a new key made? Or, as black06xlt said it could be locked out, what's the key to unlocking it? Lol, get it...key...unlock...

Alright, that's much cheaper than a new alternator and battery though I'm still going to get those, even if getting a new key works. Thank you, and I will keep everyone updated.

I swapped lock cylinders in one of my 2000's just to see what would happen.

Pretty much the same thing that happened on yours. Everything appears normal, turn the key, nothing happens, flashing theft light. Something has happened with your pats.

Would getting a new key coded fix the problem?

Most of the time it's either the key or the key reader is bad. To be completely sure I would take it to a ford dealer. Coded keys are an expensive part to try. I would estimate if either one of the parts are bad i would say about $300-$350 would fix it. Usually on a security lock out the vehicle needs to go to a dealer to reprogrammed since the key and key reader are VIN specific

If I was good enough with forscan I could tell you how to fix it. Bet you Anthony knows, try sending him a message.

There is a locksmith here in town that has a machine that reads the transponder and clones it. He did it for my DD. This guy is the most dangerous guy in ohio lol he has a little CNC machine that makes the key after laser scanning it. All in his garage.

That's a little scary lol, good on him for using it for the right purpose. And who's Anthony? I'm not sure on user's names yet. And I'm thinking it could be my key, it looks pretty beat to hell on the metal so maybe that's not sending a signal...? Idk how the keys actually work. But I have to take it to the dealer anyways for the airbag fix, so I could at least get a key made to see if that fixes, I probably need a new one anyways. While I'm there I'll see if they can help me out as well. I plan on doing this Wednesday afternoon/evening, after work. I'm gonna rent a uhaul to dolley (waaayyy cheaper that a tow truck) and use a friends truck to pull it there.

I hope it fixes it. You are a dedicated ranger owner/enthusiast and itd suck to see you lose your lola. Fingers crossed.

PS. When my keys were stolen I had to have a mobile locksmith make me a new ignition/door key cause the theif stole my spares too. Ugh!! That cost $260 a few years back. The locksmith recommended that if I needed this done in the future, I could buy the blanks online but they are only sold in pairs. Was $60 back then. Then you just get charged for programming the chip and cutting the key. A good locksmith will make sure all keys work in all doors and ignition.

Thank you for the info. Update: I'll have to get this done on Saturday. I'm off, and so is the person helping me tow my truck. It all works out better, I'll get there early in the a.m. and wont have to be rushed, and hopefully they won't need to keep my truck overnight that way. Again, thanks to all of you, I will keep yall updated.

So, to update you guys on today, my friend isnt available today so I couldn't use him, so I called a tow truck and they're all over 200 and I won't have the money for a tow, a new key made (165) and to get insurance to drive my truck, plus bills. The Bill's wouldnt be able to be paid without me getting insurance anyways. So, I called a locksmith to see if they could make a chipped key and 2 guys said they can. The first guy is off today, and the second guy told me that the key wont be the problem and that it's an ignition cylinder issue. Now, I got on autozone and looked up ignition cylinder, and there was 2. This first one looks like it could work, but I'm confused because it says it comes with a coded key, but on the notes it says without transponder key and programming dongle...? Does that mean it comes with a programmed key to start my truck or no...? Sorry if it's a dumb question I'm just confused and frustrated.

In my opinion it sounds like you a security problem with the key or key reader.

Yeah, I figured I'd have to take it there to get it fixed but I'm reaallllyyyy trying to get it fixed on my own, Ford is going to charge me an arm and a leg, BUT, they know the truck better than anyone else and have every single proper little random tool to fix it. Would the part I found earlier work to fix this, or is it something in the computer that has to be reset? I'm not trying to be stubborn but I'm just trying to find a way to do this myself and come out a tad cheaper because that part is super simple to replace and with 2 day shipping it's only $108 and supposedly comes with 2 keys. Thanks for everyone's help and input, again.

Well, I finally found a tow truck for a decent price that a coworker referred to me (I am eternally grateful to him. Thank you Fred lol), and got my truck towed to Ford today I actually just got back. The Ford technician explained that the computer will probably be fine, but he recommended getting a new key code reprogrammed and getting the old key wiped which will be great, for 2 keys and to reprogram them itll only be about 200, slightly more or slightly less; either way I am supremely optimistic about the situation plus they're going to fix the recalled passenger airbag as well, for free of course. I love free stuff. BUT, (theres always a but) he did say that while it's there they'll go ahead and top of fluids and check brakes and everything and that worries me and here's why:
1. I just did an oil change less than 1,000 miles ago with Pennzoil full synthetic and dont want them to say it needs an oil change and them go ahead and do it without an okay from me.
2. I just did the front brake calipers, pads, and rotors at about the same time as the oil and and that time the drums looked brand new still, and dont want them to say they're bad and need to be replaced, again charging me without my okay to do so.
3. I dont want someone who cant drive a manual to grind the gears or kill the clutch, but then again it's most likely not gonna leave the little parking lot so that's being a tad ridiculous.
4. I dont want them to try to upsell me on things I dont really need.

Please let me know if I'm being over dramatic and have nothing to worry about, or if I'm being fairly reasonable. I've heard horror stories about dealerships ruining cars and on that some token I've heard they've worked miracles, and this is my first experience on this situation. Any help on how to get over this fear, and help on how to deal with them if they try to do the above mentioned things would be great. Thank you guys, and I apologize for the long post.

It's a check list. Most service places do a vehicle inspection. When you pick it up they will tell you if you have any minor issues that you might want to fix. It's also know as a safety inspection. They will also let you know of you are approaching a manufactures recommended maintenance  like a trans flush etc. Knowing your trucks recent maintenance you'll know if your dealership is honest. I'll bet you'll be satisfied and happy to have your truck again. I've had good experiences with my dealership. Your approval is needed to do anything beyond what you agreed upon. It hasn't been my experience at a ford dealership to ever be hard sold or felt any pressure. Only reason I could see that would be for safety issues.

Oh, those guys drive so many cars everyday I'm sure your manual is fine.
