At some point I'd like to go with a 35 inch tire. My question is which is heavier, wheels or tires? I'm looking to stay the same or lighter but maintain a decent ride and comfort. I was told I could use my stock alloy wheels with 35s but I was wondering which would be better, a larger wheel or a large tire to save weight without compromising ride?

I went to a wider wheel & larger tires when I upgraded. I went from 245/75-16 to a 265/75R-16 tire & went to a wider rim. I was not concerned with the ride quality. I went from this,

to this,

I like the look of 35's tires on 15" wheels, they wrap around rocks better, when aired down, they protect the rims and the bead better, but they are heavier than the same tire in 17" or 18" Wheel size because of less rubber.

17" and 18" Wheels are heavier than 15" wheels, more metal, more weight, plus they just look weird, (To me), except 17/18" is where the world is going.

Ride comfort... it depends on the suspension, but heavy duty rated, tires will affect the ride but the actual ride is mostly in the Spring Rates, and the Shocks.  Look for a soft ride suspension and buy with all of your specifications laid out.

The biggest problem with larger tires and rims, is more of the weight on the braking system with excessive unsprung weight.  The axles, the tires, the rims, are all unsprung weight and if not compensated for can cause wear problems in brakes, ball joints, wheels bearing, and steering components.

So to me, and I haven't looked up weights, start your search looking for weights of each of the tires and rims that you think you like.   Pick the arrangement of Wheel/Tire that you like and you think will work.    I think you will be surprised and there will not be a lot of difference in each combo.

Good Luck, post results because it is an interesting subject, I may even do a little searching too !

Ltr

p.s.  I think the 16" Rims do not have a Beam Lock built in to the inner portion of the rim, most rims do.  Just something to think on !

I was hoping someone would know in general which was heavier, an inch of tire Vs an inch of wheel. I know wheels can vary based on style and manufacturer. I would think tires would be a little more uniform in weight. The weight is the primary concern for the reason scrambler82 described, then ride comfort. I appreciate all who commented

Tire weight is the same. It varies depending on manufacturer size tread design rubber compound tire plys. So really it just like wheels. The bigger you the heavier the set up will be.

- Not to be condescending, find out the weights of the tires and the wheels you like, maybe a few of them, then start your comparison.  Without exact weights it is hard to say which weighs more aluminum or rubber.
As black06xlt stated, every manufacturer has its own thicknesses to work with, Super Swampers will weigh more than BFG All Terrains.
then you need to consider is the wheel made from Steel, cast or forged aluminum, or some other metal, which one weight more per size, ask the manufacturer; they will be the only ones to know.

As I stated, I think, most street wheels and all terrain tires will weigh in so close you won't really need to pick anything more than which one you like !

Start your list, the longer you wait, the longer I will have to wait to find out this info.

Generally any all terrain tire will weight less then a mud terrian tire. A 1 piece wheel will be lighter then a 2 piece wheel. Keep in mind on tires the less aggressive the tread is a lighter tire. Unless your racing and turning some rpm's the weight of a wheel and tire package would go unnoticed. Tire size would make a difference in mpg and speedometer reading

I compared the advertised weights of 2 tire companys with an all terrain type tire for a 16" wheel on up to a 20" wheel. By the inch, tire weights averaged a lb/inch. But there was a 4 pound difference between tire companies as well. I used Cooper st maxx and Mickey Thompson all terrain for comparison. Coopers were heavier. I chose those 2 because they both had the same tire in all sizes for comparison.

I dont put a lot of miles on my truck at the moment but it's mostly driven on the street. Those offroad/mud tires are about $200 on up PER tire and are usually a softer compound. So I'd have to do lots of off roading to justify a set of those.

I'll try and get a wheel per inch figure

Check out the BFG All Terrain Tires, not the cheapest but good street manners AND the biggy... drum roll, they wear like steel !

My latest set have lasted me approximately five years with a road milage of approximately 9K/yr ! Nice ! They still look good and they still bite both on and off the road. Street manners are a big thing here in SoCal; after a rain the roads can be pretty slick, I haven't run into any problems with stopping with them AND they do a GREAT smoke show if you have the power to turn them fast enough.

BFG pricing will run somewhere in the neighborhood or $145.00/ea. but divide by 5 and you end up with $116.00 per year ! For me mine are 155.00/ea mounted on the truck (without shopping around) equates to, $106.00/year, I usually buy a generic spare of the same size, just in case and I don't have to pay the premium for the BFG Spare.
Some people get more milage than others, like me, I will get six year out of these ($103/year) and I WILL REPLACE THEM WITH A NEW SET OF KO2's.

I am running off at the mount AGAIN, sorry for the wordy response, by paying more up front you save in the long run !

Good Luck on your choice,

Ltr
