Some may have seen that my brother decided my truck looked good in a ditch...weeeellllll now the steering wheel is off. In the picture, the tires are pointed eyeball-straight ahead and this is how the steering wheel is. Would an alignment fix this, or would the outer tie rod be too close to the end of the inner tie rod and not have enough threads to be safe? If that doesn't make sense I'll try again. Thursday I'm getting tires and an alignment, and I'm also putting the camber kits in in the Walmart parking lot to save on install cost and to not have to worry about driving too far with a severely messed up alignment, lol living in the country isnt always beneficial. Thanks.

Part of an alignment is straightening the steering wheel. They have a
"tool" that clamps to the wheel and spans across from driver window to passenger window and holds it straight. Then they just twist tie rod ends while watching the toe on the computer.

The windows are open and it lays across the doors at the bottom (the tool)

So you dont think that fixing a steering wheel that is this off will be bad, like the outer tie rods being too far to the edge of an inner? I may be over reacting, but I'm just checking to make sure

If the wheel was straight before and after the crash it is now tilted then you need to check the steering arms, tie rods, rack, suspension for damage - just adjusting it either by resetting the wheel on the column or via the tracking adjustment is not advisable in my opinion.

The very last thing you want is something that is damaged to break in the future.

The alignment shop will know if there is anything else needed.Something did move, they SHOULD find it.

If it is an option I would take it to a shop that deals with frames also, most frame shops do alignments just to complete their frame work.

My best GUESS is something happened to the rack. I would hope your brother at least pitches in on the repair cost.

Even if the alignment shop is Walmart? Lol, a couple family members work at Walmart and I need tires and dont have a lot of cash, so they're helping me out with tires and alignment for my birthday tomorrow. Yes, I thought the rack was messed up as well and I've actually got a rack and pinion sitting in my room right now, but I don't know how to put it on. It seems simple enough, but I've heard I would need some sort of vacuum pump to recirculate the power steering fluid. And yes, you would hope he would help, but when he returned my truck after driving it into the ditch he didn't even get the glass out from the broken window or offer to pay for any damages, and still isnt offering after I've put a good amount of money and parts into it to get it back to somewhat normal. I've been driving it for while and nothing seems wrong. No popping when I turn lock to lock, no power steering whine, steering isnt loose. I assumed the gear going from the steering linkage  to the rack may have skipped some teeth on the rack, but everything seems fine. No "death wobble" either, so we'll see Thursday and I'll post an update!

Got back under the truck, checked the inner tie rods, outer tie rods, they're fine and not bent. There's no fluid coming out of the rack and pinion boots on either side, everything feels tight and intact. The only "concern" is where the steering linkage connects to the rack, it looks a little greasy but not excessive.

A little late on the update, but I got tires for my truck, and didnt get the alignment just yet for lack of funds, yes I know it's only $50-$100 but I dont have the funds and money is super tight. Not driving it too much so the tires won't die prematurely. Alignment should be done within the next couple of weeks, and I'll update again. The tires are 235/75r15 Goodyear Wrangler Radials, the website says it's an "all terrain highway tire" and I love the look and performance of the tires. Super quiet, quiter than the General Grabber HT I had on there. Tread is fairly aggressive. They do good in the mud considering I've got a one wheel wonder lol.

Everybody's budget is different and nothing to be ashamed of. I like the tires. If you get the alignment done soon the tires should be fine. Keep them rotated and balanced and they will even out if there is any issues. Mine are from discount tire so my warranty requires a rotation every 5k. They rebalance and rotate for free. I love it.

I had a 99 ranger sport 4x4 with toyos. I'd have had to pay to rebalance and rotate and I couldnt afford that back then. It drove like a clown car with offset wheel centers. I never liked toyos after that. All 4 tires had multiple busted radials. I keep my tires balanced and rotated now too. Lol

This week I have a similar budget!

This happened first set of tires on my dodge. Actually I tried to have it aligned and they said the ball joint was bad, I couldn't afford the front end parts.

A year later when I could LOL the fronts were already down to threads so try to drive it as little as you can. But if it takes wasting some tires and it is more feasible to put it off... it happens!
