I have plans on swapping a 4.6L 3v V8 with auto trans and transfer case out of a 2009 Ford explorer in to my 97 ranger, has anyone done one or have info I can use to complete a swap.

:hiWelcome James, Glad you joined us. Have fun and enjoy F-R. Yes it has been done before. However it is not easy and can be very costly to do. Just about everything will be custom fit and made.

You could do a 302 for far easier work and less cost for the efforts. I'm not too familiar with the 4.6 3v from the explorer but every pic i've seen of a 4.6 next to a 302 and its almost twice as wide.., not to say I dont' have my engines mixed up at the moment but you would literally need to take every function of the explorer that's tied into the OBD II system from trans to domelight functions and the I/P.. Even if you can fit that into a Ranger Chassis with the TTB suspension, the 12v nightmare that follows would be a task that will take you more than a few weekends. I'm assuming this project isnt your daily driver then too btw?

Where is that picture? If someone finds it for me I'll put it in my gallery seems like this is going to be a recurring situation.

Love the power you can get from a 4.6 and it has been done, as NoPower said extensive fab skills needed.

is the one in the pic a dohc 4.6 so there for is wider than a 3 valve. I have seen a pic with the coyote motor in a 2010 ranger and they aren't much different in width as the 4.6 3 valve. but I did find that weight wise, the coyote is around the same weight as the 4.0L pushrod V6

I found this on the interwebs. Its 2002 ford ranger that ford SVT built as a concept. It has a supercharged 5.4 lightning engine. Ford called the truck a ranger lightning bolt

would it be easier if I had a donor vehicle to use parts from?. I would also be doing a Dana 44 SAS and a upgrade to a Dana 60 rear axles from Dynatrac and suspension from James Duff

Personally, I wouldn't. the 4.6 isn't know for low end torque, and is known for cam phaser issues and other problems.

If you're building a wheeler, a 351W based motor will make more power down low, and be an easier swap.

I have decided to do a 351w swap. The truck will be used in a wide verity of tasks from off roading to towing to highway driving. im going to start with a stock 93-97 MFI then do a mild build afterwards running around 400 hp.

smart choice
351 is still a tough fit into the ranger but not nearly as tough as the 4.6
I like your plans!
However keep this in mind, its not too difficult to get 350-380 Hp from a stroked 5.0. You can buy a crate engine GT40 based 331 or 347 that makes these numbers and basically BOLT IT IN

I installed a 302 displacement crate engine into a 84 Ranger, this 302 makes 370 Hp and 370 ft lbs of torque.
We kept the 302 displacement because we wanted some sort of decemt MPG from the truck, it has cruise control and air conditioning. This 84 still gets 14-18 mpg.

That is from a 302, you can get higher numbers from a 331 or 347 stroker kit. I am a big fan of the 331 myself, the stroked small blocks have come a long way. The GT40 engines with the 28oz external imbalance have become common place in the aftermarket. The GT40 engine with the external balancer is a direct replacement for the 96-01 Explorer V8. The Explorer V8 is packaged by Ford to fit your Ranger engine bay. Also as a bonus the explorer engine has a high flow oil pump, high volume water pump, 135 amp alternator and a metal power steering pump. The serpentine setup is very short which makes stuffing it into a Ranger that much easier. The exhaust headers available today (Torque Monster or shorty block huggers) are good to about 380-400 hp) without notching the frame or wild steering shaft mods.
The heads on the 351 make it just that much harder to stuff into a Ranger. Clearing the steering shaft on the drivers side, the HVAC box on the passenger side, and fitting exhaust headers becomes a real challenge when you get larger then the 302 block.

I mean a 4.6, the newer snake engine, heck even a 460 big block has been done...but not without major modifications to the steering shaft, frame rails and HVAC box.

TO me it all begins with the trucks intended use. I usually then start with the transfer case and transmission choice, then decide on the engine to power it all.
What will it be used for? Daily driver? Weekend warrior? Drag strip only? rock crawler? Show truck? OR???
For most rangers we build a nice built 302 with the 4r70w and your choice of T case fits the bill. There is still room for exhaust and drivelines, as well as a heater and even AC and cruise control if you desire.
Try that with a 4.6 or 351.......

After watching project rolling thunder I'm leaning toward the 4.6L swap also.

Not on this forum but that would be a cool one. I'm still intrigued by the 4BT cummins swaps I've actually touched the Firepunk drag truck as they have been in our parking lot at work.

A coyote or 4.6 swap I would approach differently, the bed and cab would come off as well as fender wells. Would be strictly racing.

If you look at the coyote pic you will see clearly the AC box is gone, but that is an incredible looking truck.

You might have to do without AC on a 351 swap as the heads and valve covers sit higher in the assembly than the 302, making it effectively wider. 15 years ago I would have been able to spew out the deck height difference in thousandths of an inch but I would have to research it now. The headers fit higher also you would probably need custom headers.

I don't try to distract people who dream on this forum like they seem to do on others because literately ANYTHING is possible given the right amount of time and money. If you really really want it make it happen!

I'm with JAMMAN on this one, compare all of the costs in the three motors you want to swap in, and you might start to look at the 5.0L W in a different light.

You could, as suggest be 410, do a stroker kit, 331 being my choice too BUT with stock pistons you get 327 CI, which is really my top choice.  Either a 327 or 331 you will see a lot more torque than a stock 5.0L, and will feel it.  then of course there is a new Camshaft, designed for low end torque and fuel economy, better intakes and there are headers on the market for the 5.0LW, but not the other two, but buy accessories designed for Torque and you will end up with more torque and more usable HP.

Take the time to do the math first, it will save you in time and effort and you will end up with a good efficient and powerful truck.

Good Luck,

p.s. AND...for what it may be worth, based on what we have been talking about, if time was on my side, and I decided to do a conversion, it would be either a 327 or a 331 AND a 6-speed automatic, with a low stall speed torque converter... 1500-1800 rpm's.

For axles, the 8.8 that I have is strong enough to handle v8 power, is there any dana 60's that would fit without modifying the length and would the stock gears be fine for an all round daily driver and off-road purpose? (3.73:1 and limited-slip)

the explorer 31 spline 8.8 is as strong as a dana 60
It can easily handle the power of the V8 in a Ranger
