I bought a camper to set on my property that I am clearing, Im needing this 4wd to work to get this camper thru all the sugar sand.

I see that the 8th wire ( the brown one that goes over the the transfer case is just an empty hole on the plug of this new shift motor?

I found this info https://www.explorerforum.com/forums/index.php?threads/shift-motor-replacement-removing-replacing-the-brown-wire.344577/ so it clear for me now assuming this info is correct.

It mentions here that I may not even need to transfer the wire if I dont plan to shift into 4 high ( which I dont this weekend ) so maybe I can deal with this another weekend?

Maybe I can put this new motor on and be good to go as far as getting it in 4 low.

Do other adjustments have to be made but if they do where can I find that procedure?

I did get the motor on and plugged in with the exception of the brown wire and no change, when I turn the knob to switch the case I hear no clicking noise and nothing happens.

Lights blink on and off on the dash

Install the brown wire into the blank hole

If I understand you correctly the new shift motor came with a spot for the brown wire, and it was empty?

You need to unpin the brown wire from your stock plug and pin it into the new plug

Do the rest of the wires match up?
Why are you replacing the shift motor?

I mean I can guess you suspect it is bad, I am just wondering what lead you to that conclusion? Push 4hi button and nothing happens?

Its late now, I get up at 2.30-4.30, I think my camper is ready, I plan on getting it out to the woods tomm. No internet and no phone where Im at but there is a signal in town.

Anyway long story short, yes, I thought I covered it in this forum but maybe Im wrong, I dont know.

No 4WD, lights flashing on dash 4 high and low, ever since buying it.

Ill have to look back on my notes, its been a while since I messed with it, I did something......anyway the 4WD started working intermittently, everyone ( I understand they wer only trying to help ) on Rangeer station eventually told me to replace the shift motor, I ordered one a month ago, got sidetracked and put it in this A.M.

No changes, at first no 4WD, nothing.....cant hear the solenoid clicking behind the dash, nothing, then all of a sudden this afternoon ( just like before ) it started working, turn the switch on dash, I hear the clicking behind the dash and it goes into 4WD.

Cant say that it would work if I went out there right now to try it.......OK wait, Ill go out and try just for the heck of it.

Works fine again I guess, it wont go into 4 low while in park sitting there, it will only go into 4 low if I shift it to that outta neutral.

Im guessing it wont work at all in the A.M, I dont know.

I still havent transferred the brown wire yet, maybe that will matter for something, I know its obviosuly not gonna shift on the fly now ( I couldnt possibly care any less about that feature anyway.

I want it fixed, maybe you or someone here can help, like Ive said before, i dont want to just throw parts at it but maybe Ill have no choice.

Ill talk to you later.

Gotta be a way to test each component from start to finish!

OK this has gone too far, you need a fix LOL.

There is a transfer case control module in the 98. It's under the dash I have actually seen one of mine but it was way up there and a while ago.

It doesn't normally cause problems, but from your description it could be that since you have checked your switch and replaced the motor it is kind of the next step. I have never had to fool with one.

I'll check to see if my 99 explorer has the same one if it does I'll send it to you.

Looks like this:

I need to buy a parts truck. If you had a manual that showed all the 4 wd system that would be a big help, like from switch to T-case and everything in between.

I know i should have a service manual, I dont though. Thanks, Hopefully Ill talk with you guys over the weekend, I usually can get a signal in town.

The part shown is what does the "clicking" you spoke of it is the relay. The clue is it is not clicking. It is the same in my explorer I see from research.

I'll send you the module if you PM me your address. If you want to pay shipping I'll send you another shift motor. Should all fit in a medium flat rate postal box. Couldn't do it till tuesday of next week.
