 Well, I didn't do this all TODAY (or even in ONE day), but I rebuilt my front brakes with new coated rotors and powder coated calipers/brackets. New ceramic pads, soft lines, bearings and seals with just a tad of clean up and quickie paint.

The rear received a drum brake delete, replacing everything with SN95 Mustang GT rear disc brakes (also coated rotors and powder coated calipers/brackets).  New braided stainless soft lines and new hard lines as well as a new axle-to-frame soft line and ceramic pads.  The entire brake system received a thorough flush prior to the new parts to get all the black nasty fluid out and I went so far as to remove the master cylinder reservoir to give it a bath inside.

Since I had to open the diff and pull the axles, it got new axle bearings and seals, fresh fluid and a nice heavy aluminum girdle diff cover!

Some of you will notice that the e-brake cables aren't connected.  That will be another weekend project as I needed to get this back on the road (wifey doesn't like me driving her baby).

Anyway...

After that, I took it for a test drive to warm the engine up to operating temperature.  Drained the crankcase and installed a new FL400S filter.  5qts. of 5w20 high mileage synthetic oil, topped off all other fluids and replaced the fuel filter.

When checking the power steering fluid level, I decided it was just too nasty and emptied the system and flushed it with fresh Mercon, drained that out and filled it up again, then bled the air out (steers easier now).

Tomorrow is bath day for the truck.

Well, that wore me out, so I am now showered, fed and typing this post while sipping some Glenlivet single malt...  Ahhh!!!

 Those look to be PowerStop calipers.  Dude...PUT THEM ON!

Gave her a bath this afternoon, even though it is forecast to storm every day this week.  The paint needed a good rub down and bird sh*t removal.

 Thanks Mike!  My baby has been severely neglected.  Hadn't had a hand wash since late 2019.  Just a couple of automated car washes and mother nature to clean it off.  I had gotten side-tracked with house renovation, repair and remodel.  Got a belly full of that, so decided to give her some TLC!

 I ordered new e-brake cables today.  Just can't bring myself to install those severely rusted cables onto those lovely red calipers.  I ordered the intermediate cable and the two rear cables.  When they arrive, I will set aside some weekend time to install them and fabricate the trick to making them work properly with the disc brakes.

 Do you have a problem with the battery or charging system?  It shouldn't go flat that fast.  Mine has sat for well over a week without a start and the battery worked fine.

 I do have a slight drain. It takes about two weeks for it to go dead. I have found I had good luck with battery life if I trickle charge anything that is not going to be used for a while.

 I also put my lawn mower on the trickle charger between mowing's.  I got 6 years out of the first battery and 5 years out of the last battery. This is the 5th season on the current wally world battery. I had no choice on the last battery as they were the only place that had the correct battery in stock in Sylva NC. I usually buy my batteries from the local Interstate battery dealership. I know the franchise owner as we were in the same Air National Guard unit. He also gives a 15% military discount.


I also keep my ElectraGlide on a trickle charger. It is an '06 and I am on my third battery.  If I ride daily, like I am doing right now, I don't bother with the charger. I had an older biker tell me about his theory on extended battery life using a trickle charger over 30 years ago.

 I would like to ask that we all share a moment of silence in remembrance of the 1999 Ranger "Gold Dust"... she is no more.





My son, ArcticWolf1911, fell asleep on his way home from work this morning around 8:40am.  He drifted off the road, hitting a curb which woke him up, rolled the truck side over side (police say they think six times) and took out a metal light pole ending right side up in a ditch.  One witness claimed the truck did a somersault mid-air.  The hospital checked him out and did a CT Scan... all came back good, but he will be plenty sore tomorrow.  The truck, as you can see from the pics, didn't fare so well.  Total loss for sure.  We have it home and it resides in the garage until we can strip it of the goodies he installed over the years (the ones that survived the crash).  There may be a posting for some cool Ranger parts coming soon...

 Thanks Tony.  Truck can be replaced, just glad he came out of it in good shape.  It really saddens me to see that truck demolished like that.  Some of the pieces will probably make their way onto my truck, so it will live on in that respect.  He just took delivery of a new Kawasaki ATV on Friday morning.  $14000 plus the trailer he bought to haul it on.  He was telling me that he needed a full size pickup to pull it effectively.  I guess he will be buying an F150 or RAM in the coming days/weeks.

I pulled out my rear setup today to look at it. The rear calipers are not red, they are kinda like a silver color. or was. Looks like even in a drawer that one of them picked up a little moisture and is slightly powdered sadface.

Mine are explorer rears because my rear end is a big tube 31 spline torsen. When I put it in I'll make the call on if I should get red ones for the rear. Guess it would look stupid red in front and silver in rear.

Michael I need to borrow a couple pounds of your ambition, it isn't a money or time thing any more it is plain ambition.

Michael, I didn't see this yet. I am so glad he is OK, thank God for his safety and thank Ford for building such a tough truck.

 So sorry Michael, glad he is ok. That is scary  , when I worked the night shift back in 2003 I fell aselp on the way home from work & totaled a 96 Ranger when I went off the road.

 Thanks Mike.  I believe little thought and attention is given to crash ratings and such when we choose a vehicle to buy.  Most people (like myself) buy a particular vehicle because we like the way it looks, which is important, but how well it will hold up in a crash should be the top priority.

I am alive and well, fortunately. I'm not entirely sure how I walked away from that one, but I did no less. 
I'm sure at least a few of you have questions, and I have answers. I have amended my build thread with one final post. To save all of you some clicks, I will repost that video here.
