Pretty sure my battery from 2011 is dead.  Truck wouldn't start today at all.  No lights turned on when I unlocked the truck..lol  Figure might as well get a new one from Costco.  Is it normal for a battery to just die like that?  The last I drove the truck was Friday and it didn't hesitate or fail to start.

Problem is the little sticker on my battery that shows what size the overall battery is, is no longer there..lol
From research I have found that the Ranger takes a 58 and or 59 battery size.  The 59 is supposedly taller than the 58.  The rest of the dimensions are the same from width/length.  But wanted to ask what everyone is running.  Is there a pro or con to running one or the other?  IE:  IF I have a size 58, would going to a size 59 be better?

I'm not even sure which one Costco carries, as I'll stop there after work to see but wanted to get the better of the two if they did have both sizes.

Thanks,
-Nigel

Coscto carries Interstate, very good batteries at a very good price. Best part is Costco warranty, anything goes wrong boom new battery no questions asked

No it is not normal
You should check the voltage of your battery and have it tested if you think this is premature

Normally they show signs of dying before they just fail
Any chance you left something plugged in?

I would test the alternator before I replace what I thought was a good battery

Volt meter time!

I would check to see if the battery has a drain on it with something left on or a short.

I'll have to take the battery to advance auto so they can test it. Didn't leave anything on in the truck. I have everything other than the remote start/keyless entry wired to switched 12v power... but those two other devices have been on the truck for a while now with zero problems.

Found that the battery should be a size 59.

Not sure if Costco will do anything with the battery since it's 5 years old now. But I'll check the alternator when I get home. That should be OK. I replaced that about two years ago with an OEM motorcraft one. I will note that I think my battery gauge on the dash was slightly lower than usual the lasts couple weeks. Normally it's right dead smack in the middle and if I recall it was a could hairs below that. Enough that if I starred at it I said that's a little lower but nothing like on the bottom.

I'll find out more when I get home.

It'll show lower in the heat, charges harder when cold and/or after starting.

Welp went and got a new battery. Put it in and the truck starts right up. Did it 4-5 times. Seems to have been a faulty battery I guess. I checked the print out on the old one and it's 100 month warranty so I should get about 40% back on it which is cool. I checked the alternator with my multimeter and it's putting out 14v when on so that's working.

I'll take the old battery to advance over the weekend and have them run the quick test to see if there is a bad cell in the battery or if there is an issue.

Truck is back and alive! for now...lol

So realizing this issue is basically solved. I wanted to question the yr and engine size.

My 93 and 94 both have a group 65 battery which fills the tray on all sides and clears the hood and by group size is listed as a 65. I don't know what the specs to your battery is or even if a 65 fits your application but here is the low down on paper [monitor] for comparisons.

EXIDE EDGE FLAT-PLATE AGM - FP-AGM65

I've been quite impressed and happy with the Exide in both daily abuse and on the long and often very distant trail use where the key was left on from Midnight to 0900hrs 'ish most nights charging tablets, phones, flashlights, JBL flip2 speaker, playing a movie & music low all night with the tablet display (on low setting). Truck starts up like fresh battery every time...

if you're going to advance to get your old one checked, look at their house brand agm batteries: Part # 65-AGM is what i'm running in my ranger & explorer.
order online, use 20% off coupon & pickup in store to save some $$$
if you got 7 years out of a battery nowadays, you did pretty good. walmart's best batteries only lasted me about 1-2 years & i got fed up with their crappy warranty so i went with advance's AGM batteries.

My batteries usually last about three to four years, which isn't too bad since I use Sears basic Die-Hards, OEM sized batteries, with 24-months warranty.
I've used Sear's Die-Hards for years but like clock work three to four years, Wham-Bam a new battery.

The biggest problems with charging systems that always show their ugly heads when you don't need them, is Corrosion in the connections.  Just a good cleaning of the battery posts and connections, adding some Corrosion Resistant, Conductive Paste on the Terminals, and put things back to gather will result in a battery that usually will start the Truck.

When testing a battery or alternator, yes you can use a multimeter, but what you need is a Load Tester.  Most Parts Store and Auto Shops have them and if used properly will tell you if the system is really putting out when it is needed not just idling.
These Load Testers, do just that, put a load on the electrical system and will see if there is a 12 volt output or if the system will collapse under pressure and fail leaving you without starting power.

I was having a starting problem with my Tractor, I thought I had a bad safety switch in the seat or Clutch Pedal, but it was only bad connections.  After a good cleaning with Baking Soda and Water, putting it all back together it worked fantastic !

Make sure to get your vehicle's electrical system Load Tested and clean things up, before buying new parts that you may not need.

"DieHard - The brand dates to 1967. In its earliest years, the brand was guaranteed to last "forever", that is, as long as the original owner still owned the car in which it was originally installed

Some of the batteries themselves are manufactured by Johnson Controls, which also manufacture Duralast, Varta, AC Delco, as well as 20 other brands. For a time, DieHard batteries were also manufactured by Exide. In March 2001, Exide plead guilty to fraud conspiracy charges and agreed to pay a fine of $27.5 million to end a federal criminal investigation into auto battery sales to customers of Sears. The case arose from investigations and accusations that Exide conspired with Sears to sell used batteries as new to Sears customers and that Exide officials had paid bribes to conceal the fraud. However, they have switched back to Johnson Controls.

The DieHard Platinum line is made by EnerSys, which also makes its own line of premium Odyssey batteries manufactured in the United States"

From bad to worse and back again.. But I still Like my Exide batteries because of how they do perform.

And this is a load tester I bought years ago from Snap-On. it only works on a battery, NOT the electrical system. You have to separate it from the car or at least unhook it from it. It basically tells you if the battery is good or not. and although it does what it does.

If you do ONLY have a DVOM connected and pay attention to where the battery voltage drops [some meters have a low/high display pause], if it drops below 10 volts upon cranking to start, they say that battery has damaged cells and should be replaced. But you'd be hard pressed unless that battery is leaving you stranded that people wouldnt try to get by as long as they can on it, even with a system in their vehicles. My rule of thumb is if it stays above 10 volts you should replace it within the next week or two. If it dips into the 9 volt territory at all. We're pulling it right then and fetching a battery.

I've been with DieHard for so long I keep going back, usually the price is good and they last long enough for me.
When I worked for a living and drove a considerable distance my batteries seem to die earlier than since I retired. I would get the 2 years warrantied batteries and they would last about 18 month, just shot of the warranty end, I would get a replacement for short cash.

I have thought about Exide as a replacement, I think they have a round cell AMG, might be good.

Does that meter Load the Battery down to see if it will fail when it is working !
