I think I noticed this when I first installed the fuel pump but definitely noticed it today.  Silly me didn't get to fill up this morning so I went to work.  Had less than a 1/4 of a tank.  Was driving home and was pretty much right at E.  I figured normally the check gage light comes on when there is about 2 gallons left.  This used to happen all the time with my old fuel pump but when I replaced it a few months back with an OEM unit I didn't really notice it because I never really let it get this low ever...  But sure enough even taking hills/turns with the low fuel it did not trigger the little red check gage light to come on?

When I filled up it took 15.999 gallons so I only had about .5 gallons in there if the tank is 16.5, which I believe my single cab xlt is.

When I start the truck the red check gage like come on then goes off like it always has.  Bulb isn't burned out and everytime the truck is started that light comes on like the rest then shuts off.

What might cause this light to not come on when there is low fuel?  If I remember there was one electrical connector to the entire new fuel assembly.

Gauge need goes up and down just as it should when fuel is being used/filled up so that part isn't an issue.

More curious than anything just because I don't like knowing stuff isn't working... even though this was a rare case in letting it run this low on fuel, I'm wondering what else factors in to let the truck know when to activate that light.

Thanks,
-Nigel

The last time the check gauge light came on in my 2000 Ranger the gauge needle was at or a little below the empty line on the gauge.

Prior to changing my fuel pump I put 14 gallons in when the light turned on. After changing to the new fuel pump I now put 14.6 gallons when the light turns on. Somewhere in the process I bent the pickup that provides the signal to the light. It sounds like you did too, but you bent it a bit further than I did.

I try to fill up at 1/8 to 1/4 of a tank. I have the smaller 16.5 gallon tank as well.

Hmmm... I was pretty gentle when I put the entire fuel assembly in the tank.  Is it even worth it to remove and see what is possibly bent on the fuel assembly?

Is the part in question the item I have with an arrow and ?

Damn if that's the case that kinda bums me out.

Need a cluster diagram for a 2001, I do know on the 97/2000 the fuel gauge and the check gauge light are wired to the slosh module. I had one go bad on my 2000 4wd original cluster, it never read full but would read low and trigger the light.

Anyone is the 2001 just like the 2000 with the gauge and light wired to the slosh module? If so that's your problem don't pull the pump again.

Would the slosh module be on the actual cluster itself or ia it part of something else located in another place?

With some searching I believe I found the slosh module.  See attached pictures.  I actually have a spare cluster sitting here I can take the module out of and put it in my cluster.  Makes me wonder though if that would fix the light on low or if I actually did in fact bend the arm and hence not make it light come on because it's thinking there is still more fuel.

I will note that the new pump when I installed it I believe had my gauge need reader a tad higher than the last one so that might be very possible... hmmmm damn it!

Thanks,
-Nigel

I still have trouble understanding the true logic behind a gauge (a light) for a gauge you generally watch or usually have some sub conscious thought of. Especially if two days ago you're at a 1/4 tank and ya ran some errands since... lol

Now something as annoying but functional as the TPMS sensor where you may not know a tire is low.. that makes sense to me.

Totally agree with ya.  I am too am wondering sometimes why this bothers me so much.  I think it's simply because it was working as normal with the old fuel pump assembly and the new one it reads higher.  So just knowing the light won't kick on is annoying to me...haha

Very true though, if I fill up like I normally do at right about 1/4 of a tank there are zero issues.

Figured I'd post a pic of what it looks like when filled.  This is a full tank and driven 9 miles.  Looks very similar driving to work today and having a total of 40 miles on the trip.  Gauges are bright so don't mind the glare.

Wow you weren't kidding those gauges are bright do you have to wear SPF 50 on your face when you drive at night? Just kidding. But seriously though I don't think I've ever had my gauges that bright. I mean it looks cool but just way too much light inside the cab.

I prefer my stealth look old school halogen bulbs somewhat for the dash cluster although I have gone as far as changing out all of the warning lights, turn signals, and AC control lights, with LED lights. I even went as far as changing out the glove box light and when I had, it the ashtray light with the LED as well. And sometimes when I dim the lights all the way down, those still tend to be a bit too bright almost,.. like as if I don't have enough dimmer control.. so weird

Picture definitely amplifies the brightness.  I wouldn't say they are blinding by any means but they are nice and bright/clear light.  My favorite was actually the stock cluster with green letter and white needles.  To me that was the best, but I got this cluster to change it up a little bit.  Still nice.  I had normal bulbs in there before and it makes for a weird yellowish light that I wasn't fond of.  At one time I too also changed out all the warning/signal bulbs to LEDS and it was too bright.  I would turn my brights on and get blinded by the blue led.  Ditto for anything else.  I took them all out and put stock bulbs in but kept the turn signal indicators as LEDS.  Those I can tolerate.  The halogen reminds me of our mercedes which has an ugly (imho) amberish color lighting (mind you it's extremely easy on the eyes and isn't straining at all.  It's pleasant to look at which is probably why MB used that color).  This isn't nearly as bright as my STi's red cluster.  That has to be turned down on long night drives as it's bright.  Very awesome looking but too much if you are on the road for hours.  Plus I have a cf cowl so the inside reflects.  First red cluster is mine, second is probably a more real representation of just how bright it can be...lol (Another members car).  My favorite so far is my wife's Lexus NX... everything inside is a nice pure white light.  It's extremely clean and easy to look at.  You can dim almost to nothing.  My wife's dd which is a solara you can completely turn off the cluster/all interior lights when you turn it down.   It's comical to drive with the top down at night and then ENTIRE cluster/cabin is pitch black.  People just look at you like where are your lights?

My STi cluster:
