.......and other front-end stuff.

OK folks, I just had my 98 4.0 XLT 4x4 up on a lift for my first undercarriage inspection.
The good news:minimal rust and the drivetrain looks & feels fine...nothing loose, shaking or wobbly.

The bad news: Gotta do ball-joints.
R-side: lower ball {upper is still nice & tight}
sway-bar link
inner tie-rod
Driver's side:
Upper & lower ball joints
sway-bar link

I don't need anything heavy duty because my 4x4 use is primarily as it's needed and not recreational. I had good experience w/Moog on my 88 Bronco so I plan on using Moog parts on this unless y'all have suggestions.
My big question is 4x4 vs 4x2 when I'm ordering parts.  Is there a distinction?  I've been on Rock Auto and they don't show any differences.
Also, if anyone has specific part #s that would be nice too. :)

Be aware that MOOG has introduced an economy line of suspension parts, presumably to remain competitive. These parts are generally sourced from China and the jury is still out on whether they are more comparable to other MOOG parts or to the average budget Chinese parts.

How does one tell which is which?

In the past, MOOG part numbers for Rangers had a "K" first letter
for the [more or less] domestic line.. Lately that seems to have morphed to "CK"  A lot of these are the North American parts that we have been using for years but a K or CK does not necessarily guarantee that. A K or CK does seem to mean that they are from MOOG's premium (more expensive) group.

If you see an "RK" as the first letters in a part number, that is from the MOOG economy line, most likely from Asia.

These are my own observations based on what I've seen poking around in parts lists and I think they are correct. If anyone has any better info, please set me straight.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
4x2 vs 4x4 for 98~2011:
Actually, this is more correctly divided into coil spring suspension vs torsion bar suspension. Most parts do NOT interchange between the 2 groups.
All 98~2011 coil spring Rangers are 2WD.
Torsion bar trucks can be 4WD or 2WD.
2WD Rangers with torsion bars include the 2000 Trailhead, 2001~2005 Edge and the 2006~2011 Sport.
All 98~2011 4x4 Rangers were equipped with torsion bars, regardless of model.
One of the P/N's is: CK8708T .....I'll assume that I want to keep looking for a better upper arm.
K700542
K8695T &
EV317 are the other P/N's.
Big fan of Detroit Axle, have bought many things from them and steered others that way. I have called them directly before, got a little better price than their e-bay stuff.
Moog is king but have never had a questionable part from DA yet.
So what was the purpose of that 2 piece passenger side upper?
A fine adjustment called "caster split".
From 98~2003.5, torsion bar Rangers had a 2-piece upper control arm on the passenger side only. The extra caster split adjustment was eliminated in midyear 2003, so later TB Rangers use 1-piece right and left UCA's that are mirror images of each other.
The later 1-pc PS UCA can be used in place of earlier 2-pc UCA or just the ball joint carrier portion of the 2-pc can be replaced.
2 piece should mean you can replace JUST the ball joint.. where as a 1 piece, when the ball joint goes the whole thing gets swapped in favor of new.
That' my guess based upon the import market of things..
Thanks for all the info guys.
From what I've seen, the uppers are single unit of integrated arm & joint, whereas the lowers are pressed.
I'm going to check into Detroit Axle and compare prices.
I'll be ordering parts by week's end and the install will be one of my son Kevin,jr's Christmas presents to me. Gotta love it when you have a certified wrench in the family.  Hell, that's even better than a Dr or lawyer in the family! ;)
My son isn't certified, but he is damn good at it for a 19 year old, and always willing to jump in and help his old man! :)
BTW, that is one nice looking Bronco you have there!
I ended up going with this Detroit kit since I'm not going to be doing any radical 4wheeling. Plus, I couldn't beat the price. ;)
You know what's funny is... if you need support you can call them and they actually answer the phone. You can order directly from them and they will give you the e-bay price too.
I was impressed at the quality of their stuff. I have bought 2 sets of wheel bearings and assorted other front end parts.
I'd say it probably is, but I think Edge's can be quirky vs other Rangers so I'd double check/cross-reference to be sure. I'm still learning these trucks but I'm sure there's someone here who can give better & more educated info.
