98 5.0 is in the shop getting some well planned updates and a couple of fixes
She's out there in town doing daily driver duties like a good v8 ranger and like all the rest of them eventually she demands some attention.
Part of the deal with these trucks we build here, well they like to come home sometimes........ so they find silly reasons to pay a visit.
EGR
We are battling an EGR code with this 5.0. Turns out the EGR system had more then one issue. The main issue was a big air leak at the explorer exhaust manifold to EGR tube adapter. A new adapter was sourced (Turned into a PITA to find the correct part)

I now have a couple on the shelf so when we run into this again we are prepared.
The stock piece simply deteriorated and the threads were non existent
This truck already has a new EGR hard line, soft lines and new gaskets. The EGR valve itself, with only 104k it still tests out just fine, basically with the engine running if you apply vacuum it should want to stall out...lif that happens your EGR valve is working.
Now after all of this.......One final code remains ... DPFE circuit failure
Code cleared, comes back in a few drive cycles.
So I am actually removing the aftermarket DPFE I bought for this truck in an effort to try and solve the excessive flow code, only to have a circuit failure code develop weeks later.
I am now putting the stock 104K DPFE back on. Turns out the DPFE was not the issue, the EGR air leak was.
BATTLE ON
DPFE 5.0 access the easy way, micro 1/4" drive with 1" extension and 7mm socket. Some 5.0 may have 5.5mm:


Now onto the good stuff
DAKOTA DIGITAL SPEEDO CORRECTION
This truck is running 285 76 16 tires, which are basically a 32" rolling diameter.
If you remember truck has 3.73 gears and a 4r70w transmission, 4406E electronic shift t case. This 98 Ranger also has 4wabs brakes, not RABS (this is important)
The speedometer reads slow.... we have tested it a few times, enough to know that 60 mph reading on the dash is actually 65-66 mph
So I installed a Dakota digital speedometer interface....that's right my favorite little VSS fix all doo dad for these conversions the Dakota sgi-100bt
This will allow us to calibrate the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) signal to adjust for tire size, gear changes, what have you.
The DD100bt (I will call it for short) has a simple task this time. 98 Ranger is slightly easier then the 2002 Sport trac I did recently
I need the DD100bt to reduce the number of pulses per mile being sent from the 4wbs computer to the speedometer so that 65 mph now reads 60 mph.
Speedometers are off by a percentage, not by a number...like "my speedo is off by 5 mph" is an incomplete statement...... You need to know at what actual speed it is off my 5 mph and in what direction
The math goes like this
65/60 x CAL VALUE = NEW CAL VALUE
The 4 wabs computer on a 98 ranger takes the rear axle speed sensor signal and "buffers" or "smooths" it down to approx 8000 pulses per mile
How do we know this? Well Ive been doing this a while and have recently done a TON of research on Ford speedometers...........
Back in 1988 when the VSS was a cable driven device it sent approx 8000 pulses per mile to the speedo
In 1996 the cable went away for good, but the transmission/tcase speed sensor still sent approx 8000 ppm to the now electronic speedometer
Then in 98 Ford ditched the trans mounted VSS and went to a single VSS mounted in the rear axle (cost saving efforts)...this VSS no longer sends 8000 ppm....
So in 4WABS 98 Rangers the 4wabs module under the hood actually does the math
So I need to tap into the vss signal coming out of the 4wabs module, send it to the dakota , buffer it slightly (by 0.923 if my math is correct) and send it back to the truck
This will then feed the speedometer, the PCM, the GEM, and the speed control servo the correct, smoothed.......8000ppm signal.....
Just FYI for you hardcore ranger buffs, the 98 Rangers with just RABS, the GEM module sends the VSS signal out......so you would tap into circuit 679 GY/BK wire VSS out......more on that later.
I will do a writeup for installing the DDBT100 that should cover 98-04 rangers when you need to do a speedometer correction

Right after the firewall, when the GY/BK wire circuit 679 goes through plug C135 is where I spliced in........fun wiring under the dash....one handed soldering anyone?

Reduce 1-2 shift firmness
Transmission shifts a little too harsh, What can I say, we built this 4x4 ranger v8 monster......this truck is a hotrod.
Well the new owners are daily driving this thing and not exactly in their 20's anymore (we are all getting up there!) and the 1-2 shift is a little stiff hehehehehe even though we kept the valve body shifts on the mild to medium setting when you are on the fuel feed she kicks into 2 with a pretty good snap.....
So I'm going to reduce it........
First we check for broken accumulator spring in the 1-2 accumulator.
Then accumulator gets new springs, or fixed or.......
Next the separator plate and gaskets will be changed out for a stock 2000 4r70w unit
This will fix that shift and swap out 4-5 quarts of mercon V and a fresh trans filter

Rear driveshaft seal
Transfer case 4406 rear output seal Leaky leaky
New seal going in
few teaspoons on the floor of the shop, seal has seen better days
Otherwise truck is soooooo much fun to drive
Stay safe out there people........so much smoke in the air....I will be working in the shop, windows closed......trying to stay not on fire..........
Typical day at 410Customs.....field of Fords, believe it or not there are also 3 chevy's and two VW's back there......only the Fords belong to me :) HAHAHAHAHA
